Measurement of basilar membrane motion during round window stimulation in guinea pigs.

Driving the cochlea in reverse via the round window membrane (RWM) is an alternative treatment option for the hearing rehabilitation of a nonfunctional or malformed middle ear. However, cochlear stimulation from the RWM side is not a normal sound transmission pathway. The basilar membrane (BM) motion elicited by mechanical stimulation of the RWM is unknown. In this study, the BM movement at the basal turn was investigated in both reverse via RWM drive and acoustic stimulation in the ear canal or forward drive in postmortem isolated temporal bone preparations of guinea pigs. During reverse driv…

Effects of background noise level on behavioral estimates of basilar-membrane compression.

Hearing-impaired (HI) listeners often show poorer performance on psychoacoustic tasks than do normal-hearing (NH) listeners. Although some such deficits may reflect changes in suprathreshold sound processing, others may be due to stimulus audibility and the elevated absolute thresholds associated with hearing loss. Masking noise can be used to raise the thresholds of NH to equal the thresholds in quiet of HI listeners. However, such noise may have other effects, including changing peripheral response characteristics, such as the compressive input-output function of the basilar membrane in the …

Intermodulation distortion (F2-F1) in inner hair cell and basilar membrane responses.

Round window (RW) recordings in guinea pigs show a large response at the frequency of the quadratic difference tone (QDT) at F2-F1 for high- … nsduction in the IHC. However, QDT of the same form is not evident in the velocity responses of the basilar membrane. These results suggest that the outer hair cells (OHC) produce a strong quadratic distortion product mechanical force to stimulate inner hair cells. This mechanical drive may not be present, or is a weak component, in basilar membrane motion.

A finite element model to predict the consequences of endolymphatic hydrops in the basilar membrane.

Ménière's disease is an inner ear disorder, associated with episodes of vertigo, fluctuant hearing loss, tinnitus, and aural fullness. Méniè … steady state dynamics analysis are in accordance with clinical evidences. The results show that the basilar membrane is not affected in the same intensity along its length and that the lower frequencies are more affected by the endolymphatic hydrops. From a clinical point of view, this work shows the relationship between the increasing of the endolymphatic pressur …

The mechanical waveform of the basilar membrane. II. From data to models--and back.

Mechanical responses in the basal turn of the guinea-pig cochlea are measured with low-level broad-band noise as the acoustical stimulus [fo … e impedance is found to be locally active, that is, the impedance function shows a region where the basilar membrane is able to amplify acoustic power or to reduce dissipation of power by the organ of Corti. Finally, the influence of deliberate errors added to the data is discussed in order to judge the accuracy of the results.

Frequency tuning of basilar membrane and auditory nerve fibers in the same cochleae.

Responses to tones of a basilar membrane site and of auditory nerve fibers innervating neighboring inner hair cells were recorded in the same cochleae in chinchillas. At near-threshold stimulus levels, the frequency tuning of auditory nerve fibers closely paralleled that of basilar membrane displacement modified by high-pass filtering, indicating that only relatively minor signal transformations intervene between mechanical vibration and auditory nerve excitation. This finding establishes that cochlear frequency selectivity in chinchillas (and probably in mammals in general) is fully expressed…

Behavioural measurement of level-dependent shifts in the vibration pattern on the basilar membrane.

Physiological data suggest that the travelling wave on the basilar membrane evoked by a sinusoid of fixed frequency moves towards the base with increasing level. We describe two psychoacoustic experiments that attempted to provide evidence for and quantify the extent of such a shift in humans. In experiment 1, masking patterns were measured in forward masking using a fixed 6-kHz tone presented at 65 or 85 dB sound pressure level. The threshold for detecting a brief sinusoidal signal was measured as a function of signal frequency for several time delays of the signal relative to the end of the …

Fibronectin-like immunoreactivity of the basilar membrane of celloidin-embedded human temporal bone sections.

Dysfunction of the mechanical properties of the basilar membrane is a potential cause of presbycusis. In cases of minimal sensorineural or strial degeneration it is believed to play a major role. The membrane has been shown to be partly composed of fibronectin. Fibronectin immunoreactivity is diminished in aged rats. Mesothelial cell line the perilymphatic surface of the membrane and are reduced in number in the aged rat cochlea. Fibronectin immunoreactivity was examined in human temporal bone sections (6 months to 92 years old). Hematoxylin and eosin stained section (17 to 97 years) were immu…

Speech recognition in noise: estimating effects of compressive nonlinearities in the basilar-membrane response.

OBJECTIVES: This experiment was designed to estimate effects of cochlear nonlinearities on tonal and speech masking for individuals with normal hearing who have a range of quiet thresholds. Physiological and psychophysical evidence indicates that for signals close to the characteristic frequency (CF) of a place on the basilar membrane, the normal growth of response of the basilar membrane is linear at lower stimulus levels and compressed at medium to higher stimulus levels. In contrast, at moderate to high CFs, the basilar membrane responds more linearly to stimuli at frequencies well below th…

Otoacoustic emission estimates of human basilar membrane impulse response duration and cochlear filter tuning.

This study describes a method based on temporal suppression of click-evoked otoacoustic emissions (CEOAEs) to estimate the time course and duration of human basilar membrane impulse responses (BM IRs). This was achieved by tracing the suppression of dominant peaks in the CEOAE spectrum as a function of the temporal separation between two equal-level stimulus clicks. The relationship between the suppression pattern and underlying BM IR duration near the generation site of the CEOAE frequency was established using model simulations. To relate BM IR duration estimates to cochlear filter tuning (Q…

Basilar-membrane motion in the alligator lizard: its relation to tonotopic organization and frequency selectivity.

In the alligator lizard the entire basilar membrane is accessible for measurements of its velocity by the Mössbauer method. Tests of the method indicate (1) the Mössbauer source can be placed on the basilar membrane without altering the signal-transmission properties of the cochlea, and (2) the source adheres to the basilar membrane. Isovelocity curves (IVCs) were constructed by plotting (as a function of tone frequency) the sound-pressure level at the tympanic membrane required to produce a specified velocity amplitude. IVCs from 21 lizards for source locations spanning the length of the basi…

A study of the vibration of the basilar membrane in human temporal bone preparations by the use of the Mössbauer effect.

Using the Mössbauer technique, we have studied the vibration of the human basilar membrane and malleus head in the sound frequency range 0.2--9.0 kHz and at a sound pressure of 100 dB at the tympanic membrane. The displacement frequency response curves for the basilar membrane and the malleus head have similar shapes, with a maximum at about 1 kHz. Below and above 1 kHz the curves have a slope of about 10 dB/octave and--100 dB/octave, respectively. In addition, the basilar membrane has a maximum displacement at a frequency dependent distance from the stapes. A simple hydrodynamic model for the…

Effectiveness of active middle ear implant placement methods in pathological conditions: basilar membrane vibration simulation.

Active middle ear implants (AMEI) amplify mechanical vibrations in the middle ear and transmit them to the cochlea. The AMEI includes a floa … iency of each surgical approach using a finite-element model of the human cochlea. Vibration of the basilar membrane (BM) of the cochlea is simulated by applying the stimulus through the OW or RW. Pathological conditions, such as impaired stapes mobility, are simulated by increasing the stiffness of the stapedial annular ligament. RW closure due to chronic middle …

Reflections on the role of a traveling wave along the basilar membrane in view of clinical and experimental findings.

Air conduction (AC) is accompanied by displacements of the two cochlear windows, bulk fluid flow between them, a pressure difference across the basilar membrane, leading to a passive traveling wave along the membrane, which activates the cochlear amplifier and enhances the displacements. AC interacts with bone conduction (BC) stimulation, so that it has been assumed that BC stimulation also involves a passive traveling wave. However, several clinical conditions and experimental manipulations provide evidence that a passive traveling wave may not be involved in BC stimulation at low intensities…

A human temporal bone study of changes in the basilar membrane of the apical turn in endolymphatic hydrops.

We observed that some temporal bones with endolymphatic hydrops (EH) showed varying degrees of basalward displacement (towards the scala tympani) of the basilar membrane (BM) in the apical turn of the cochlea. In some, the BM was adherent to the bony wall of the scala tympani (i.e., the interscalar septum). Such mechanical distortion of the BM could conceivably alter cochlear mechanics and lead to sensorineural hearing loss. The results of a systematic evaluation of 234 temporal bones to characterize, quantify and determine the functional significance of this observation are presented. Four gr…

Distinctive mechanical response characteristics of the guinea pig apical cochlear organ of Corti and basilar membrane.

Upon acoustic stimulation of the mammalian cochlea, a travelling wave will move in a base-to-apex direction, peaking close to the resonant place of the basilar membrane. A gradient of different resonances along the basilar membrane gives rise to frequency-place coding, or tonotopicity, throughout the majority of the cochlea. Per our previous findings, the organ of Corti in the guinea pig cochlear apex does not display tonotopicity. The behavior of the basilar membrane has not been explored throughout the cochlear apex, and so hypothetically tonotopicity is conserved at the level of this struct…

Behavioral estimates of basilar-membrane compression: additivity of forward masking in noise-masked normal-hearing listeners.

Cochlear hearing loss is often associated with a loss of basilar-membrane (BM) compression, which in turn may contribute to degraded processing of suprathreshold stimuli. Behavioral estimates of compression may therefore be useful as long as they are valid over a wide range of levels and frequencies. Additivity of forward masking (AFM) may provide such a measure, but research to date lacks normative data from normal-hearing (NH) listeners at high sound levels, which is necessary to evaluate data from hearing-impaired (HI) listeners. The present study measured AFM in six NH listeners for signal

Dynamic activation of basilar membrane macrophages in response to chronic sensory cell degeneration in aging mouse cochleae.

In the sensory epithelium, macrophages have been identified on the scala tympani side of the basilar membrane. These basilar membrane macrophages are the spatially closest immune cells to sensory cells and are able to directly respond to and influence sensory cell pathogenesis. While basilar membrane macrophages have been studied in acute cochlear stresses, their behavior in response to chronic sensory cell degeneration is largely unknown. Here we report a systematic observation of the variance in phenotypes, the changes in morphology and distribution of basilar membrane tissue macrophages in …
