Development of Novel Approaches for the Treatment of Cutaneous Candidiasis.

The main culprit behind cutaneous candidiasis, a fungal infection that can lead to major dermatological and systemic health problems, is Candida albicans. Over the past 20 years, cutaneous candidiasis has become more prevalent, especially in hospitalized or immunocompromised patients. Conventional treatment methods employ antifungal drugs like azoles and polyenes, which are effective but have drawbacks because of their high recurrence rates, negative side effects, and growing antifungal resistance. This study highlights recent advancements in novel treatment techniques for cutaneous candidiasi

Mucocutaneous and cutaneous generalized candidiasis in a thymectomized dog.

Cutaneous candidiasis is usually related to immunosuppressive diseases and/or therapies as predisposing factors. In humans, chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMC) is observed with thymoma and thymectomy. In this case report we describe the clinical and pathological findings, laboratory analysis, treatment, and follow-up of a thymectomized dog with cutaneous and mucocutaneous generalized candidiasis.

Congenital cutaneous candidiasis: a rare and unpredictable disease.

Congenital cutaneous candidiasis (CCC) is an extremely rare disorder that presents within the first 6 days of life. The manifestations ranges from diffuse skin eruption without any systemic symptoms to respiratory distress, hepatosplenomegaly, sepsis, and death. We report a neonate who presented with generalized skin eruptions at birth, characterized by erythematous macules and papules. The eruption involved head, face, neck, trunk, and extremities. Candida albicans was demonstrated on direct KOH smear, skin biopsy. The disease implies a congenital intrauterine infection and is different from

Clinical and mycological spectrum of cutaneous candidiasis in Bombay.

A total of 150 patients with cutaneous candidiasis were studied. A detailed clinical history was taken. Scrapings were examined in 10% KOH, and the material cultured on Sabouraud's agar. Species were identified by the serum germ tube test, sugar fermentation and sugar assimilation tests. Of 150 patients 79 were females. The commonest presentation was intertrigo (75), vulvovaginitis (19) and paronychia (17). A history of chronic exposure to water was obtained in 94 cases, all had erosio interdigitalis blastomycetica and/or paronychia. Diabetes melltius as a predisposing factor was observed in 2

Congenital cutaneous candidiasis associated with maternal peripartum candidemia.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous congenital candidiasis (CCC) is a rare condition consisting of invasive fungal infection of the epidermis and dermis that mostly affects preterm infants. Maternal vaginal candidiasis is present in half of the cases, although the occurrence of invasive candidiasis during pregnancy or peripartum period is exceptional. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a full-term infant that was born by vacuum-assisted vaginal delivery to an apparently healthy 33 year-old woman with no history of intravenous drug use or vaginal candidiasis during pregnancy. The newborn showed a diffuse m

Congenital cutaneous candidiasis: clinical presentation, pathogenesis, and management guidelines.

We describe a term infant with congenital cutaneous candidiasis (CCC), and review all cases in the English literature that reported birth weight and outcome. Presence of an intrauterine foreign body was a predisposing factor for development of CCC and subsequent preterm birth. The most common presentation of CCC in neonates weighing >1000 g was a generalized eruption of erythematous macules, papules, and/or pustules that sometimes evolved to include vesicles and bullae. Extremely low birth weight, premature neonates weighing <1000 g most often presented with a widespread desquamating and/or er

Experimental murine candidiasis: cell-mediated immunity after cutaneous challenge.

Male CBA/J mice, sensitized by cutaneous inoculation with viable Candida albicans blastospores, were used to study in vivo and in vitro cellular immune responses. Three antigens of C. albicans, viz., a cell wall glycoprotein (GP), a membrane extract (ppt-HEX), and soluble cytoplasmic substances (SCS), were used in vitro in a lymphocyte stimulation assay, whereas the GP and ppt-HEX were used in vivo to detect delayed hypersensitivity by the footpad assay. Delayed hypersensitivity to GP and ppt-HEX was transferred from sensitized donors to naive recipients with peritoneal exudate cells and not w

Widespread cutaneous candidiasis and tinea infection masking mycosis fungoides.

A 71-year-old female with a widespread double mycotic infection caused by C. Albicans and T. rubrum was discovered to be suffering from mycosis fungoides. Clinically she was found to have large, polycyclic erythematous plaques with scaly, slightly infiltrated borders, covering almost all areas of the glabrous skin, and also involving the scalp (with no hair penetration), the soles and palms, toe-webs, finger and toe nails; there was also perleche and oral thrush. Cultures yielded C. albicans from most of the skin lesions, from the scalp, mouth, finger nails and urine and stool specimens, and T

Congenital cutaneous candidiasis in a premature neonate: A case report.

Congenital cutaneous candidiasis (CCC) is a rare and usually benign disorder that develops within the first week of life. It predominantly presents with diffuse maculopapular and papulopustular erythematous desquamating patches. We report a preterm neonate with respiratory distress syndrome and skin diffuse maculopapular lesions at birth. Candida albicans was isolated from skin and gastrointestinal fluid culture; she underwent medical treatment with topical and systemic antifungal with clinical improvement and skin lesions resolution.

Congenital Cutaneous Candidiasis With Systemic Dissemination in a Preterm Infant.

Congenital cutaneous candidiasis is an infrequent invasive fungal infection that usually appears in the first days of life. Extremely low birth weight infants are the most frequently affected. Classic presentation includes diffuse extensive erythematous rash with papules, plaques, pustules and vesicles, which later undergoes desquamation. Systemic dissemination is common in extremely low birth weight infants. Blood, urine and cerebrospinal fluid evaluation should be included in the initial assessment. Early and prolonged treatment has been associated with decreased mortality. We report the cas

Diffuse cutaneous candidiasis in a dog. Diagnosis by PCR-REA.

The authors describe a clinical case of cutaneous candidiasis in a dog with dermatological lesions, characterized by persistent alopecia, crusts, ulcers and scales. Predisposing factors such as the use of corticosteroids, the concomitan presence of an autoimmune disease (pemphigus foliaceus) and an infection of ehrlichiosis caused by Ehrlichia canis were observed. Histopathological findings included signs of orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis, moderate follicular keratosis and light epidermic acanthosis. The reactive process included an infiltrative superficial dermatitis and a mural folliculitis w

Intrapleural inoculation of candida in an infant with congenital cutaneous candidiasis.

Though several pathologic processes can produce large denuded skin lesions in very low birthweight infants, trauma is often diagnosed without further investigation. Failure to consider other causes may prevent institution of appropriate specific treatment and may contribute to the development of serious complications, as described in the present case report of a premature infant with congenital cutaneous candidiasis.

Cutaneous candidiasis mimicking acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis: A case report.

Disseminated cutaneous candidiasis is a rare manifestation of candidiasis that arises most commonly from Candida albicans. It is described as a widespread erythematous papulopustular skin infection that typically affects premature newborns or immunocompromised patients. While candidal infections usually respond well to antifungal therapy, the clinical presentation of disseminated cutaneous candidiasis can often mimic a variety of other dermatologic conditions, that can lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment. We present a 67-year-old comorbid male patient with widespread erythema and superfici

Topical sterosomes-based nanocarrier of miconazole for the management of cutaneous candidiasis.

BACKGROUND: Miconazole (MN) is widely used to treat superficial fungal infections; however, limited skin penetration and short residence time restrict its therapeutic efficacy. This study aimed to develop and statistically optimize MN-loaded sterosomes (STEs) to enhance topical antifungal activity. METHODS: A central composite rotatable design (CCRD) was applied using Design-Expert® software to study the effects of cholesterol amount (mg) and sonication time (min) on vesicle size (VS), zeta potential (ZP), and entrapment efficiency (EE%). Vesicle morphology was characterized by transmission e

Chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis: a case with exuberant cutaneous horns in nipples.

Chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis is a rare disorder characterized by persistent and recurrent infections by Candida due to changes in cellular immunity and may be associated with autoimmune endocrine disorders. It is refractory to the usual antifungal treatments, which merely control it with imidazole derivatives. This reports the case of a 50-year-old female patient who referred vaginal discharge associated with vulvar ulcerated lesions and whitish plaques on oral and genital mucous membranes of onset in adolescence besides cutaneous horns in nipples. The clinical picture, family history, cu
