This study is focused on genome sequence and annotation of the Bacteroides strain isolated from the blood of a patient with descending colon cancer. According to a comparison of the 16S ribosomal RNA sequence with the National Center for Biotechnology Information database, this strain was identified as Bacteroides sp. aff. Thetaiotaomicron. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations on heparin-water-sodium systems were carried out in order to establish a simulation protocol able to represent heparin solution conformation under physiological conditions. This study describes the structural characterization of a totally new family of peptides from the venom of the snake green mamba (Dendroaspis angusticeps). Interestingly, these peptides differ in several points from other already known mamba toxins. First of all, they exhibit very small molecular masses, ranging from 1.3 to 2.4 kDa. Complete 1H and 13C spectrum of a polysaccharide isolated from Escherichia coli, which is the major component of the enterobacterial common antigen, has been analyzed through two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. In addition, distance constraints from NOESY and ROESY experiments have been combined with molecular dynamic simulations to determine its major conformation in water solution. Polymer-supported butyltin(IV) reagents have been surveyed for regioselectivity in acetylation of sucrose. Polymer-supported butyltin(IV) dichloride 8 catalysed the acetylation of sucrose to give a 59% yield of 6-O-acetyl sucrose 3, the precursor of sucralose. The yield is close to that of a previously reported process involving dibutyltin(IV) oxide (Bu2SnO). The spent polymeric resin could readily be regenerated and can be subsequently used in further synthetic reactions.

Many eukaryotic proteins bind to membranes using a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor. GPI anchors are essential in yeasts and probably also in protozoa. Although mammalian cells can survive without GPI anchors, their deficiency in haemopoietic cells cause a haemolytic disease, paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH). Here, we discuss recent progress in our understanding of GPI-anchor biosynthesis that could lead to a better understanding of PNH and chemotherapeutic agents to treat protozoal and fungal infections.

Plasminogen isolated from 60 full-term newborns differs from adult plasminogen in carbohydrate composition, kinetic activation constants, and cell binding.
