A case of ectodermal dysplasia with anodontia, and severe hypotrichosis is described. Clinical aspects and differential diagnosis with Huth-chinson-Gildorf syndrome are also discussed.

INTRODUCTION: Anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (EAD) is an inherited syndrome with an incidence of one per 100,000 live births and is characterized by hypotrichosis, anhidrosis or hypohidrosis, and oligodontia. Various treatment options for the dental rehabilitation of children presenting with this disease have been published. There is however no consensus on what age implants should be placed. Our purpose was to describe the disease and rehabilitation with early implants through two case reports.
OBSERVATION: Our two patients, a brother and sister, aged 14 and 15 years respectively, presented…

A rare case of ectodermal dysplasia--the Rapp-Hodgkin syndrome--is presented. Its diagnosis is discussed and the importance of a multidisciplinary management and genetic counselling outlined.

A case of a 10-year old boy with anhidrotic ectodermal dyspasia is reported. The classic triad has been established--hypodontia, hypotrichosis and anhidrosis, confirmed by biopsy. The patient's genealogy was studied, revealing inheritance by C-chromosome. The early treatment results in functional, aesthetic and psychological effect. The prostheses should periodicaly be changed so as to guarantee the proper development of the jaws.

INTRODUCTION: An analysis was made of three different syndromes associated with p63 gene mutations, known as ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting syndrome (EEC), ankyloblepharon-ectodermal dysplasia clefting syndrome (AEC or Hay-Wells) and Rapp-Hodgkin syndrome (RHS). The postoperative complications associated with their cleft reconstructions were also evaluated.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Extensive demographic information, in particular of the clinical appearances, associated malformations, and the types and complications of the reconstructive surgical procedures, were recorded of these sy…

We describe a hitherto apparently undescribed ectodermal dysplasia in four siblings. The condition combines severe hypotrichosis, hypoplasia of enamel leading to secondary anodontia, dystrophic nails, supernumerary nipples, nevus pigmentosus, bone deficiency of the fronto-parietal region, and other anomalies. This condition is probably due to an autosomal-recessive gene. ?

PURPOSE: The ectodermal dysplasias (EDs) constitute a group of disorders characterized by abnormalities in two or more ectodermal derivatives, including skin, hair, teeth, and sweat glands. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate ocular manifestations in pediatric patients with ED.
METHODS: Retrospective case series including consecutive ED subjects who were treated in the ophthalmology department at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia over a 12-year period (2009-2020). Main Outcome Measures were ocular and ocular adnexal abnormalities.
RESULTS: Thirty subjects were included: 20…

Ectodermal dysplasias are a family of genodermatoses commonly associated with variants in the ectodysplasin/NF-κB or the Wnt/β-catenin pathways. Both pathways are involved in signal transduction from ectoderm to mesenchyme during the development of ectoderm-derived structures. Wnt/β-catenin pathway requires the lymphoid enhancer-binding factor 1 (LEF1), a nuclear mediator, to activate target gene expression. In mice, targeted inactivation of the LEF1 gene results in a complete block of development of multiple ectodermal appendages. We report two unrelated patients with 4q25 de novo deletion en…

The hereditary condition known as ectodermal dysplasia is characterized by the absence or defect of two or more ectodermally derived structures. The most commonly observed forms of ectodermal dysplasia are the hidrotic and hypohidrotic types; discrimination is based on the absence or presence of sweat glands. A case of 8-year-old male child with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with complete anodontia of primary as well as secondary dentitions is presented. The child had a short stature, low intelligent quotient (I.Q.,), and was underweight. The patient experienced episodes of high fever, was…

Ectodermal dysplasia-skin fragility (EDSF) syndrome is a rare and first described inherited disorder of desmosomes. It occurs due to loss-of-function mutations in PKP1 gene resulting in poorly formed desmosomes and loss of desmosomal and epidermal integrity. We report a case of a 2-year-old Indian male child who presented with palmoplantar hyperkeratosis with fissuring, short, sparse, and easily pluckable scalp hair, nail dystrophy, and multiple erosions over the skin. Skin biopsy showed epidermal hyperplasia with widening of intercellular spaces. His developmental milestones were delayed but …

Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is an inherited heterogenous group of disorders causing mal formation of all tissues originating from ectoderm, like defect in hair, teeth, nail and sweat gland function. Numerous types have been described. Hypohydrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is one of the common type; characterized by hypohidrosis, hypotrichosis (abnormal hair), onychodysplasia (abnormal nail) and hypodontia or anodontia (abnormal dentition). The significance of this disease lies in severe hypodontia. Dental clinicians can be the first to diagnose such cases. The dental team should be aware of it…

Pathogenic mutations have now been described in ten different desmosomal proteins: plakophilin 1 (PKP1) and 2 (PKP2); desmoplakin; plakoglob … n the heart. The collection of clinical features in individuals with PKP1 mutations has been termed ectodermal dysplasia-skin fragility (ED-SF) syndrome. This genodermatosis is classified as a suprabasal form of epidermolysis bullosa simplex and thus far there have been 10 published cases. Skin biopsy shows acanthosis, acantholysis, and a reduced number of small, poor …
