The phytochemical constituents and protective effect of Fritillaria hupehensis on acute lung injury.

Acute lung injury (ALI), a severe respiratory disorder, frequently develops into acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) without timely treatment and scores highly in terms of morbidity and mortality rates. Fritillaria hupehensis is a famous traditional Chinese medicine with antitussive, expectorant and anti-asthmatic effect. Here, the effects of F. hupehensis extracts on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ALI mice were evaluated for the first time. We showed ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) significantly reduced the leukocytes and neutrophils of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and the lung i…

A network-based pharmacology study of active compounds and targets of Fritillaria thunbergii against influenza.

Seasonal and pandemic influenza infections are serious threats to public health and the global economy. Since antigenic drift reduces the effectiveness of conventional therapies against the virus, herbal medicine has been proposed as an alternative. Fritillaria thunbergii (FT) have been traditionally used to treat airway inflammatory diseases such as coughs, bronchitis, pneumonia, and fever-based illnesses. Herein, we used a network pharmacology-based strategy to predict potential compounds from Fritillaria thunbergii (FT), target genes, and cellular pathways to better combat influenza and inf…

Transcriptomic analysis reveals effects of fertilization towards growth and quality of Fritillariae thunbergii bulbus.

Fritillariae thunbergii Bulbus (FTB) is a traditional Chinese medicine that has been widely cultivated for its expectorant, antitussive, antiasthmatic, antiviral, and anticancer properties. The yield and quality of F. thunbergii are influenced by cultivation conditions, such as the use of fertilizers. However, the optimal type of fertilizers for maximum quality and yield and underlying mechanisms are not clear. We collected F. thunbergii using raw chicken manure (RC), organic fertilizer (OF), and plant ash (PA) as the base fertilizer in Pan'an County, Jinhua City, Zhejiang Province as experime…

In vitro and in vivo antitumor activity of Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae and preliminary investigation of its mechanism.

Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae (BFC) is widely used in China both for food and folk medicine because of its powerful biological activities. Firstly, this study was designed to examine the antiproliferative activities of the different fractions from BFC in vitro by MTT assay. The results showed that chloroform extracts (CE) and the purified total alkaloids of BFC (TAF) exhibited stronger antiproliferative activity than the other fractions. We further determined the total alkaloids and 3 main alkaloids monomers content of CE and TAF by UV and HPLC-ELSD methods, respectively. Moreover, we assessed…

Metabolomics and polysaccharide fingerprinting reveal compositional differences between cultivated Fritillaria bulbs and flower by-products.

Although Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus (FCB) is used in food-related product contexts and local botanical-infusion practices, co-produced flowers remain underutilized and poorly characterized. To support QC-oriented screening and consistency evaluation, we compared bulbs and flowers from two dominant cultivated sources, F. unibracteata var. wabuensis (FW) and F. unibracteata (F), across 36 batches. UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS metabolomics annotated 76 compounds and discriminated between cultivated source and tissue, yielding candidate markers. Targeted UHPLC-QQQ-MS quantified five alkaloids; peiminine diff…

The Fritillaria alkaloid peiminine acts as a chemosensitizer to potentiate oxaliplatin efficacy against gastric cancer.

BACKGROUND: Fritillaria walujewii Regel (Xinjiang Bei-Mu), an authentic ("Dao-di") medicinal herb documented in Chinese pharmacopoeias, is traditionally used to treat respiratory disorders. Its principal steroidal alkaloid, peiminine (PMI), demonstrates significant anticancer activity. Oxaliplatin (Oxa), a first-line chemotherapeutic cornerstone for gastric cancer (GC), is limited clinically by intrinsic chemoresistance. Natural product-derived monomers represent a promising strategy for developing chemosensitizers to overcome such resistance. However, the potential of PMI to counteract Oxa ch…

Fritaipaines A - J, isosteroidal alkaloids with anti-neuroinflammatory activity from the bulbs of Fritillaria taipaiensis.

Ten new isosteroidal alkaloids, fritaipaines A - J (1-10), and six known congeners (11-16) were isolated from the bulbs of Fritillaria taipaiensis. The planar structure of these compounds as well as the absolute configuration, were fully elucidated based on spectroscopic and single-crystal X-ray diffraction data analysis and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) methods. Fritaipaines A (1) and B (2) are rare C26 cevanine-type alkaloids having C-18 nor carbon skeleton. Fritaipaines C - F (3-6) are the first examples of jervine-type alkaloids featuring an inversed E/F ring moiety. The characterist…
