Hearing alterations following meningitis. 1. Hearing improvement.

In ten patients suffering from hearing loss following meningitis or meningoencephalitis, hearing recovery was observed. Eight of the cases had suffered from purulent meningitis, five cases had Haemophilus influenzae meningitis, 1 had coli meningitis, and 1 had meningococcal meningitis. In one case, the ethiologic agent remained unknown. Two other cases had suffered from viral meningoencephalitis. Postmeningitis hearing loss was observed in 19 ears. In eight ears, the hearing loss was profound, and in eleven, it was slight to moderate. Recovery of hearing occurred in 16 ears and was complete in…

Hearing.

The main hazard for hearing in the workplace is noise. Organic solvents and heavy metals may increase the danger of developing occupational hearing loss, particularly in the case of co-exposure with noise. While noise produces damage predominantly to the cochlea, chemicals may be responsible for pathologic changes in both peripheral and central parts of the auditory pathway. Noise-induced hearing loss develops slowly over the years, although its progression is most dynamic during the first 10-15 years of exposure. Pure-tone audiometry indicates a bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, affecting…

[Adult deafness: hearing aid or hearing repair...].

With the increase in lifespan, presbyacusis is a common situation. It starts with the difficulty of understanding in noisy conditions and may extend to withdrawal of social activity because we do not face the unintelligibility during diners and meetings. But, with difficulty, the hearing impaired confesses his deafness and hardly recognizes "his" presbyacusis. It will last approximately 10 years, 10 years with lost of profit from his entourage. The practitioner who meets more frequently this range of 60-65 years people should be able to detect this beginning deafness, or set the stage of presb…

Hearing more to hear less: a scoping review of hearing aids for tinnitus relief.

OBJECTIVE: As tinnitus is often associated with hearing loss, hearing aids have been proposed for tinnitus relief in literature for more than 70 years. There is a need for recent literature to be reviewed and guide decision making in tinnitus management. This scoping review aims to provide an update of the available evidence on hearing aids for tinnitus, focussing on the effect of sound amplification or combination devices (i.e. amplification and sound generation within one device). DESIGN: Research studies were included if they investigated hearing aids or combination devices for tinnitus an…

Hearing Aid Usage and Reported Hearing Difficulty in Americans With Subclinical Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVE: Subclinical hearing loss (SCHL) (previously defined by our group as a four-frequency pure tone average [PTA4] >0 to ≤25 dB) has recently been associated with depressive symptoms and cognitive decline. This suggests that the common 25 dB adult cutpoint in the United States for normal hearing may not be sensitive enough. We aim to characterize real-world hearing difficulties, as measured by hearing aid use and self-reported hearing difficulty, among individuals with SCHL. STUDY DESIGN: Analysis of biennial cross-sectional epidemiologic survey (National Health and Nutrition Examinatio…

How to quantify binaural hearing in patients with unilateral hearing using hearing implants.

Application of bilateral hearing devices in bilateral hearing loss and unilateral application in unilateral hearing loss (second ear with normal hearing) does not a priori lead to binaural hearing. An overview is presented on several measures of binaural benefits that have been used in patients with unilateral or bilateral deafness using one or two cochlear implants, respectively, and in patients with unilateral or bilateral conductive/mixed hearing loss using one or two percutaneous bone conduction implants (BCDs), respectively. Overall, according to this overview, the most significant and se…

[Hearing loss and idoneity--the segnalation of noise-induced hearing loss hearing Loss].

Work idoneity in hearing loss must be related to working ability and evolution risks. Working ability is referred to the difficulties found in speech comprehension and in signals perception. As regards hearing loss evolution it is necessary to define if the subject is affected by conductive or neurosensorial hearing loss. In conductive hearing loss it is necessary to evaluate entity and frequential distribution of the deficit. In neurosensorial hearing loss it is necessary to distinguish between noise-induced hearing loss and extraprofessional hearing loss. In noise-induced hearing loss the ev…

Beethoven: His Hearing Loss and His Hearing Aids.

: To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of the great classical composer, Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), we point out how his hearing loss affected him and how the primitive hearing aids at that time helped mitigate his hearing loss. From the age of 26, Beethoven began to suffer from a fluctuating, progressive hearing loss ("my hearing grew worse and worse"), This started in his left ear ("in my left ear, with which this illness of my ears had started"), where he had difficulty hearing higher pitched tones ("I don't hear the high notes of the instruments and voices") and words ("So…

Bone-anchored hearing aids versus conventional hearing aids.

Hearing amplification technology has been evolving since the 19th century. Currently in most audiology departments, the mainstay of hearing rehabilitation is performed with conventional air and bone conduction aids. These are cost-effective, non-invasive hearing aids but are not without their drawbacks. This chapter explores the advantages and disadvantages of conventional hearing aids compared with the bone-anchored hearing aids. Although the bone-anchored hearing aids are a more expensive invasive option, there is increasing evidence that the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Users report…

[Objective adjustment of hearing aids to hearing disorders].

The aim of a functional prosthesis - a hearing aid - is to improve the comprehensibility of speech. The hearing aid is individually adjusted for the patient. Every deaf patient is subjected first to an extensive otolaryngological and audiological examination programme which comprises the recording of the case-history, assessment of the ENT diagnosis, examinations of threshold and suprathreshold sound audiometry, verbal and sentence audiometry in a sound-proof chamber and in space. To set the most important parameters of hearing aids (frequency characteristics, intensification and dynamic range…

Hearing Health Care Utilization Following Automated Hearing Screening.

BACKGROUND: The study examined follow-up rates for pursuing hearing health care (HHC) 6 to 8 months after participants self-administered one of three hearing screening methods: an automated method for testing of auditory sensitivity (AMTAS), a four-frequency pure-tone screener (FFS), or a digits-in-noise test (DIN), with and without the presentation of a 2-minute educational video about hearing. PURPOSE: The study aims to determine if the type of self-administered hearing screening method (with or without an educational video) affects HHC follow-up rates. RESEARCH DESIGN: The study is a rand…

Age-Related Hearing Loss: Innovations in Hearing Augmentation.

Age-related hearing loss is a multifactorial condition that affects more than one-third of the aging population. Left untreated it can increase the risk of cognitive decline, dementia, social isolation, depression, and falls. Hearing augmentation devices exhibit improved digital sound processing and Smartphone connectivity. Stigma remains one of the prominent barriers and todays devices offer in the canal models, miniature sizes, and camouflage with the hair or skin color. Although rigorous scientific efforts are made in the research field of inner ear regeneration and some clinical early phas…

Hearing voices and listening to those that hear them.

This paper is concerned with the experience of service users of a mental health Trust. The shared experience of the particular service user group is that of auditory hallucinations. The paper argues that mental health practitioners have, traditionally, not listened effectively to the subjective experience of voice hearing. By creating an environment in which service users can discuss their shared experience, the mental health practitioner can facilitate learning from experience and the development of 'common-sense' management strategies. Such strategies do not demand, or require, text book ans…
