The Liver Cancer Study Group of Japan statistically analyzed 2396 cases of primary liver cancer diagnosed from January 1, 1978 to December 31, 1979 in over 500 hospitals throughout the country. The Japan Marrow Donor Program (JMDP) was officially funded as of December 1991. The process of donor recruitment has been successful and the registry now has an enrollment of 32,140 Japanese donors with approximately 1200 donors being added monthly. The number of unrelated transplants facilitated through JMDP is increasing and 62 unrelated BMTs have been carried out since January 1993. The unique composition of donor pool of JMDP will be helpful with respect to international cooperation in unrelated BMT.

Human brucellosis, one of the most common zoonoses worldwide, rarely occurs in Japan, and only a few chronic cases have been reported. We herein report the case of a 39-year-old Japanese woman with chronic human brucellosis, considered a Brucella canis infection, that persisted for 19 years. Pemphigus is a group of autoimmune blistering diseases characterized by blisters and erosive lesions on the skin and mucous membranes due to loss of cell and cell adhesion of keratinocytes. Mass newborn screening was started in October 1977 throughout Japan in order to detect five inborn errors of metabolism including phenylketonuria, maple syrup urine disease, homocystinuria, histidinemia, and galactosemia. In Japan, gold dermatitis due to ear piercing increased in the early 1990s, but has subsequently become rare. To evaluate this clinical finding and to determine the frequency of gold allergy in Japan, we analysed the results of patch testing with 0.2% gold chloride from 1990 to 2001. 653 patients were tested from March 1990 to December 2001. 55 patients showed a positive reaction to gold (8.4%).
