BACKGROUND: The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus infects host cells by binding to angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). Stilbamidine (SDC), a compound identified in Malaysian Kelulut honey (KH), has been reported to exhibit favourable binding affinity towards ACE2. This study aims to determine the effects of KH and SDC on the binding of spike protein to the ACE2 receptor, as well as to assess their modulatory potential on ACE2 gene and protein expression in lung and kidney cells.

p-Biguanidoacetophenone amidinohydrazone, given in single doses, can cure mice infected with an old laboratory strain of Trypanosoma rhodesiense, but it has only slight action on more recently isolated strains. Trypanosomes which are resistant to stilbamidine are resistant to this compound also. Apparently its trypanocidal action is similar to that of the diamidine series of trypanocidal compounds.

Blastomycosis is a specific granulomatous disease which tends to be chronic and indolent. It frequently presents in extrapulmonary form by means of haematogenous dissemination from the lungs. It has been shown that tuberculosis, histoplasmosis and coccidioidomycosis are, in the majority of cases, mild and subclinical in effect and often heal without therapy. It is probable that blastomycosis behaves in a like manner. Stilbamidinium hexachloroiridiate was found trypanocidal in vitro against Trypanosoma brucei brucei IPP at 600 microM after a 1 h incubation period and 30 microM after 24 h. This activity was confirmed in mice with a subcutaneous treatment at 20 mg/kg in a single dose. It was then evaluated on T.b. brucei murine CNS model. At the early stage, a subcutaneous treatment at 2 mg/kg/day x 5 cured 50% mice where-as one single dose at 10 mg/kg was completely inactive. Higher doses failed to cure the mice. A survey of 159 cases of pulmonary fungal disease treated at the Hospital of the University of Mississippi is presented. The fungal diseases encountered were blastomycosis, 75 cases (47%); histoplasmosis, 38 cases (24%); aspergillosis, 17 cases (11%); cryptococcosis, 13 cases (8%); nocardiosis, nine cases (6%); and actinomycosis, seven cases (4%).
