AIMS: Recommendations for the management of women with suspected uncomplicated lower urinary tract infections (UTIs) include presumptive antibiotics with or without obtaining a urine culture (UCx). However, with increasing antibiotic resistance, efforts to decrease antibiotic usage are vital. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine if the presumptive treatment of women with suspected uncomplicated UTIs is contributing to unnecessary antibiotic usage.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all nonpregnant female patients presenting to our student health services clinic with UTI s…

INTRODUCTION: It is important for graduate-level nursing students to be competent in the issues involved in the social determinants of health and health disparities and have the tools to address them as graduates.
METHOD: As part of a nursing workforce diversity program, master's-level nursing students were required to participate in a service learning project exposing them to an issue not directly linked to health-long bus rides for students as a result of school consolidations-to achieve educational goals and objectives while providing a service to an advocacy agency.

This research examined 1) the prevalence of substance use behaviors in college students, 2) gender and academic level as moderators of the associations between mental health problems and substance use, and 3) mental health service use among those with co-occurring frequent binge drinking and mental health problems. As part of the Healthy Minds Study, a probability sample of 2843 college students completed an Internet survey on mental health problems, substance use behaviors, and utilization of mental health care. Response propensity weights were used to adjust for differences between responden

Ensuring equitable access to professional education programs for learners who need accommodations is distinctly challenging when education moves beyond the classroom into clinical or fieldwork sites. Fieldwork educators and university academic coordinators who arrange fieldwork placements work with university accessibility services and students to arrange required accommodations, while preserving confidentiality, maintaining high learning standards, and ensuring attainment of professional competencies. This work is complicated by time pressures and heavy caseloads in fieldwork settings. Here w

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems are common and impairing among university students, yet only a minority of students with psychological disorders access treatment. Understanding barriers to treatment is integral to planning services, especially in resource constrained settings like South Africa (SA).
METHODS: Data collected across 17 institutions in the online SA National Student Mental Health Survey were used to: (1) estimate 12-month prevalence of common mental health problems and self-harm; (2) estimate the proportion of students receiving treatments for the various mental health problem

There has been a significant increase in the cases of skin cancer throughout the world in the last few decades. Although the mortality rate of skin cancer is relatively low, its impact on other health aspects is high and the treatment of undesired aesthetic damage is costly. According to disability-adjusted life year rates (DALY), 1.5 million days are estimated to be lost from people's lives every year worldwide due to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The purpose of this study was to raise sun health awareness levels among health services vocational school students. A total of 414 students were inc

INTRODUCTION: Goal orientation and academic self-efficacy are central constructs in educational psychology; however, their roles in applied, interpersonal learning environments remain underexplored. This study examined relationships among mastery, performance, and avoidant goal orientations, academic self-efficacy, and academic performance in a service-learning course for health professions students. The mediating role of academic self-efficacy was also evaluated.
METHODS: Seventy-four undergraduate and graduate public health students enrolled in a semester-long wellness coaching service-lear

INTRODUCTION: Adolescence and youth are times of major growth and change that can place young people at elevated risk of poor sexual and reproductive health (SRH) outcomes, particularly when they are living away from home for the first time. Understanding the barriers that young people face when accessing SRH services and information is imperative for addressing their SRH needs; our study explored this topic among university students in Ethiopia. Specifically, we explore university students' SRH experiences, access to services, and preferred sources of information.
METHODS: We draw on mixed-m

Asian American adults endorse more symptoms of social anxiety (SA) on self-report measures than European Americans, but demonstrate lower prevalence rates of SA disorder in epidemiological studies. These divergent results create ambiguity concerning the mental health needs of Asian Americans. The present study is the first to investigate this issue in adolescents through assessment of self-reported SA in Asian American high school students. Parent and self-ratings of impairment related to SA and self-reported mental health service use for SA were also measured. Asian American students endorsed

OBJECTIVE: Episodes of mass violence can increase mental health (MH) symptoms among survivors, possibly leading to increased MH service use. Within the context of an episode of mass violence that impacted a university community, we prospectively explore the predisposing (demographics, clinical levels of MH symptoms, victimization history, objective exposure, and social support), enabling (MH stigma, prior MH service use,), and need (MH symptoms, current social support) variables that influence posttragedy MH service use.
METHOD: In the original study, 593 students completed surveys at 2 time

Inadequate dietary habits in youth are known to increase the risk of onset of various diseases in adulthood. Previously, we found that female college students who skipped breakfast had higher incidences of dysmenorrhea, suggesting that breakfast skipping interferes with ovarian and uterine functions. Since dietary habits can be managed by education, it is preferable to establish a convenient screening system for meal skipping that is associated with dysmenorrhea as part of routine services of health service centers. In this study, we recruited 3172 female students aged from 18 to 25 at Kanazaw

College students are at risk for mental health concerns and hazardous alcohol use, yet few access services. We examined perceived barriers to and benefits of mental health services utilization (MHSU) among college students with and without symptoms of depression, anxiety, and/or hazardous alcohol use. Second-year students (n=756; 63.4% female, 76.3% White non-Hispanic) were asked about depression, anxiety, alcohol use, and perceived barriers to and benefits of MHSU. Approximately 20% of students reported depression symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and/or hazardous alcohol use. About 40% of students

BACKGROUND: While the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic creates fear and anxiety on the students' academic achievement, the risk of an infectious disease may negatively affect education by reducing the concentration ability of students. Thus, it is essential to evaluate the knowledge, behaviors, anxiety levels, and hygiene status of students.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the knowledge, behavior change, anxiety, and hygiene status of university students about COVID-19.
METHODS: The investigation was conducted with students of three vocational schools of health services located in
