A skin eruption developed in five calves with advanced experimental East Coast fever (ECF) (Theileria parva infection). In three cases the eruption was due to intradermal nodules containing numerous theilerial schizonts, in one animal the nodules contained abscesses filled with Demodex mites, and in the fifth calf both types of nodules were present. No nodules were seen in 15 other experimental cases of ECF, which generally died or were killed in an earlier stage of the disease. It is postulated that demodicosis may become apparent in healthy carriers of the mite in the course of ECF, because

Theileria annulata is a protozoan parasite with a complex life cycle involving a bovine host and a tick vector. It is transmitted by Hyalomma ticks and is the causative agent of tropical theileriosis, a debilitating and often fatal disease in southern Europe, northern Africa and large parts of Asia. Understanding the biology of different life cycle stages is critical for the control of tropical theileriosis and requires the use of experimental animals which poses an ethical concern. We present for the first time the in vitro infection of red blood cells (RBCs) with T. annulata differentiated s

Theileria orientalis is a tick‒borne intracellular parasite of red blood cells that causes severe and mild infections in various ruminants worldwide. To date there have been 11 types identified within this species, of which 4 types are presently found in New Zealand cattle. Since 2012, New Zealand has suffered a substantial epidemic of infectious bovine anaemia in both dairy and beef cattle associated with the Ikeda type. The speed at which the disease spread through the North Island suggested that other species could have been involved in transmission. The aim of a series of related experimen

Equine piroplasmosis in donkeys has been recognised as a serious problem of major economic importance. The present molecular study is the first investigation of the presence of Theileria equi and Babesia caballi in Balkan donkeys and of the possible haematological alterations related to it. A total of 70 apparently healthy donkeys from Serbia were included in this study. The overall prevalence of T. equi infection in donkeys tested with multiplex PCR was 50%. There was no B. caballi-positive sample. Infections in donkeys included in this study seem to be associated with decreased red blood cel

Bovine piroplasmosis are tick-borne protozoan diseases caused by parasites of the genera Theileria and Babesia. Three Friesian cattle farms (F1-F3) with previous history of clinical piroplamosis were selected in Minorca (Balearic Islands, Spain). Blood samples were collected from 8 to 11 animals every two months throughout a year and, a newly developed multiplex DNA bead-based suspension array based on the Luminex(®) xMAP technology was used to monitor for the presence of piroplasms. The assay incorporated probes for Babesia divergens, Babesia bovis, Babesia bigemina, Babesia major, Babesia oc

Theileria orientalis, an emerging haemoprotozoa, primarily targets large ruminants, especially cattle. Being a globally distributed haemoprotozoa, it causes oriental theileriosis, which is transmitted by the tick vector Haemaphysalis longicornis. In tropical countries, such as India, Rhipicephalus microplus (Asian Blue tick) is another potential vector for disease transmission. Unlike T. parva and T. annulata, schizonts of T. orientalis are non-lymphoproliferative in nature and the main pathogenic effect is contributed by the piroplasms destroying erythrocytes, resulting in anemia. The T. orie

In bovine theileriosis the use of chemotherapy to control an infection sufficiently long to permit the establishment of a solid protective immune response has been developed as a routine vaccination procedure. Infections with Theileria parva and T. annulata can be prevented by the administration of carefully controlled numbers of sporozoites simultaneously with a long acting tetracycline and this form of immunization has been widely used for the control of East Coast fever in Africa with considerable success. In this review, the nature of the chemotherapy, the immune response and the interacti

The chemotherapeutic effect of halofuginone lactate (Terit, Hoechst) was tested against natural pathogenic Theileria parva infections (East Coast fever, ECF) in 24 cattle. Halofuginone lactate, administered per os, 1.2 mg per kg b.wt and repeated after 48 h manifested a potent schizonticidal effect, observed between 5 and 11 days post treatment. Disappearance of erythrocytic forms (EF) took long, ranging from 6 to 34 days post treatment. Differences on efficacy between halofuginone lactate tablets and solution were not observed. The use of furosemide (Dimazon, Hoechst) to promote diuresis in p

The moulting behaviour of nymphal Rhipicephalus appendiculatus from the laboratory colony and 3 field strains from Kenya was greatly influenced by constant temperatures between 18 and 37 degrees C but was not significantly different for the 4 tick strains. Six batches of R. appendiculatus (Muguga laboratory) nymphs which had engorged on cattle parasitaemic with 4 stocks of Theileria parva (Kiambu 4, Kiambu 5, Muguga and Mbita 4) isolated in Kenya were incubated at constant temperatures between 18 and 37 degrees C during their pre-moult and post-moult periods. In 3 out of 4 attempts strains of a Theileria sp. of low virulence were isolated in the laboratory by feeding adult Rhipicephalus appendiculatus collected from the field on susceptible cattle. One of the strains, previously identified as Theileria? taurotragi (Tzaneen), was found to be serologically cross reactive with the other 2 strains. It was concluded that T.? taurotragi is prevalent in South Africa in those parts where the vector exists. Infection was characterized by a transient fever and small numbers of macroschizonts and piroplasms. Subinoculation of the infection with small volumes

Theileriosis caused by Theileria lestoquardi (malignant ovine theileriosis) in sheep and Theileria annulata (topical theileriosis) in cattle, is a tick-borne hemoprotozoal disease that causes major economic losses in animal production caused by a tick-transmitted haemoprotozoan Theileria species, infecting various domestic and wild animals. It is a threat to the buffalo population in Pakistan due to high mortality rates and economic losses. Extensive mixed farming in Pakistan poses threats due to mixed infections and increased mortality rates. The current case report describes the mixed infect

Theileria annulata (T. annulata) is an important hemoprotozoan that causes high morbidity and mortality. Free amino acid levels, being associated with all organ systems, can provide valuable insights into disease processes. In this study, the role and prognostic significance of the amino acid profile in the pathogenesis of the disease in cattle infected with T. annulata were evaluated. In the study, a total of 46 cattle were used, including 31 T. annulata infected cattle (survivor n = 16, nonsurvivor n = 15) and 15 healthy cattle forming the control group. 1-Methylhistidine, 3-Methylhistidine,

PURPOSE: The cell culture technology for Theileria annulata schizont-infected cells plays a vital role in basic research and control of bovine theileriosis. T. annulata is an intracellular parasite transmitted by some species of ticks.
METHODS: Unlike other Apicomplexa parasites, T. annulata can infect and transform host B cells, dendritic cells and macrophages, further induce the transformed cells yield some cancer-like phenotypes. The attenuated parasites were obtained through in vitro culture technology, which can effectively prevent T. annulata infection.
RESULTS: The cell culture has ev

Piroplasmosis (Babesiosis) and Theileriosis are tick-borne diseases caused by protozoan parasites of genera Babesia and Theileria, respectively. These diseases pose an imminent threat to livestock health and productivity, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. The economic impact of these infections is substantial due to decreased milk and meat production, reproductive losses, increased veterinary costs, and, in severe cases, animal mortality. Despite decades of research, controlling and managing these diseases remains challenging. Traditional treatments, such as imidocarb dipropionat

Bovine tropical theileriosis caused by Theileria annulata is an overwhelming haemoprotozoan tick-borne disease in taurine and cross-bred cattle in Punjab, India. However, there seems to be no report from India of cutaneous nodules associated with the disease. This report describes a five-year-old cross-bred cow presented to a university clinic with a history of fever, inappetence and malaise for the past six to seven days. Clinical examination revealed normal vital parameters, pale mucous membranes, mild enlargement of the prescapular lymph nodes and multiple subcutaneous nodular masses (2-4 c

Theileria orientalis (also known historically as T. sergenti and T. buffeli) is responsible for benign or non-transforming theileriosis, and exerts its major effect through erythrocyte destruction. The life cycle of T. orientalis is essentially similar to that of other Theileria species, except that the schizonts do not induce transformation and fatal lymphoproliferation. The pathogenesis of anaemia as a result of infection is not clearly established and may be multifaceted. Clinical signs of weakness, reluctance to walk and abortion are early but non-specific indications of disease, particula
