Relationship among motivation, vocabulary learning strategies and the breadth of vocabulary knowledge: A structural equation modeling study on second language learning.

This study investigated Chinese second language learners' learning motivation, second language learning (SLL) vocabulary learning strategies (VLSs), and their relationships with vocabulary knowledge (VK), especially with vocabulary size. Data were collected from 275 non-English major students at a university in Wuhan (230 valid responses, effective rate 83.63%), spanning from freshmen to seniors, predominantly composed of first-year and second-year students (90.9%), with limited representation from third- and fourth-year students across three semesters (2024 spring, 2024 autumn, and 2025 autum…

Comparing Scores on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and Receptive One-Word Picture Vocabulary Test in Preschoolers With and Without Hearing Loss.

PURPOSE: We sought to compare raw scores, standard scores, and age equivalences on two commonly used vocabulary tests, the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) and the Receptive One-Word Picture Vocabulary Test (ROWPVT). METHOD: Sixty-two children, 31 with hearing loss (HL) and 31 with normal hearing (NH), were given both the PPVT and ROWPVT as part of an ongoing longitudinal study of emergent literacy development in preschoolers with and without HL. All children were between 3 and 4 years old at administration, and the two tests were administered within 3 weeks of each other. Both tests we…

Test-time optimization for domain adaptive open vocabulary segmentation.

We present Seg-TTO, a novel framework for zero-shot, open-vocabulary semantic segmentation (OVSS), designed to excel in specialized domain tasks. While current open-vocabulary approaches show impressive performance on standard segmentation benchmarks under zero-shot settings, they fall short of supervised counterparts on highly domain-specific datasets. We focus on segmentation-specific test-time optimization to address this gap. Segmentation requires an understanding of multiple concepts within a single image while retaining the locality and spatial structure of representations. We propose a …

Mechanisms of Vocabulary Acquisition Persist Under Variable Language Experience.

Deaf children with hearing caregivers are uniquely at risk for incomplete and/or delayed first language exposure: their spoken language access is often incomplete, and hearing caregivers who choose to learn a sign language usually begin after their child's diagnosis. Limited access to language during early childhood delays language learning. However, it is unclear whether the mechanisms underpinning vocabulary acquisition, reflected in sensitivity to various lexical properties, are also impacted by variability in early language experience. In this study, we compared the composition of early si…

Explicit tier two vocabulary instruction for young deaf children.

This study examined the effectiveness of the explicit, evidence-based vocabulary intervention, Text Talk, for deaf children attending mainstream spoken language education settings during the early years of school. The Text Talk program is designed to guide teachers' Tier Two vocabulary instruction in the context of read-aloud storybooks. Participants included 20 children with moderate-to-profound hearing loss using spoken language to communicate, and their teachers of the deaf (ToDs) at mainstream schools with deaf facilities. The study investigated both the students' growth in vocabulary know…

Morphological awareness and vocabulary predict reading resilience in adults.

Resilient readers comprehend written language despite word reading deficits. The reading resiliency framework specifies candidate protective factors hypothesized to mitigate adverse effects on reading comprehension arising from phonological decoding deficiencies and, consequently, illuminates how some individuals exhibit relative reading resiliency. A focus on relative reading resiliency involves an examination of individual strengths and weaknesses because areas of relative strength can bolster one's abilities. The ability for morphological awareness and vocabulary to be strengths or protecti…

Vocabulary comprehension in adults with fragile X syndrome (FXS).

BACKGROUND: Receptive and expressive vocabulary in adult and adolescent males with fragile X syndrome (FXS) have been shown as significantly lower than their chronological age; however, receptive vocabulary has been considered a strength relative to mental age. This has not been formally examined, however, and data are needed to compare receptive vocabulary with other language skills and with mental age in individuals with FXS. This is especially important as vocabulary measures are sometimes used as a proxy to estimate language ability. METHODS: This preliminary study examined receptive voca…

Interactive electronic storybooks for kindergartners to promote vocabulary growth.

The goals of this study were to examine (a) whether extratextual vocabulary instructions embedded in electronic storybooks facilitated word learning over reading alone and (b) whether instructional formats that required children to invest more effort were more effective than formats that required less effort. A computer-based "assistant" was added to electronic storybooks. The assistant posed extratextual vocabulary questions. Questions were presented in a multiple-choice format so that children could respond by clicking on the picture that best represented the target word. In Experiment 1 (N=…

Concept vocabulary in children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

This longitudinal study compares concept vocabulary knowledge of children with cochlear implants (n = 40) and children with hearing aids (n = 30) to that of their typical hearing peers (n = 40). Participants completed the Bracken Basic Concept Scale: Expressive (BBCS:E) at ages 4 and 6. Results revealed significant differences in concept vocabulary knowledge between both groups of children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) and the typical hearing group. Although all groups improved BBCS:E test performance between ages 4 and 6, the rate of improvement in children who are DHH did not trend t…

The effect of retrieval practice on vocabulary learning for DHH children.

On average, deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children have difficulty developing expressive spoken vocabulary comparable to hearing peers. Yet, there are no evidence-based practices to guide classroom instruction for teachers of the deaf. Retrieval practice-a robust learning strategy-has been shown to improve children's retention of vocabulary, but it has not been investigated with DHH children who use listening and spoken language. The present study examined whether DHH children benefit from using retrieval practice to learn new vocabulary. Sixteen DHH children (in the age range of 5.0-8.11 yea…

The Effect of Phonological Overlap on English and Spanish Expressive Vocabulary.

PURPOSE: This study examined the effect of phonological overlap on English and Spanish expressive vocabulary accuracy as measured by the bilingual Expressive One-Word Picture Vocabulary Test-Fourth Edition (EOWPVT-IV). We hypothesized that if languages interact during an expressive vocabulary task, then higher phonological overlap will predict higher expressive vocabulary accuracy, especially in the nondominant language. METHOD: Twenty English-dominant bilingual children (English-Spanish) completed the bilingual EOWPVT-IV. We calculated phonological overlap between 117 English and Spanish wor…

Vocabulary Development and the Shape Bias in Children With Hearing Loss.

Purpose Although children with hearing loss (HL) can benefit from cochlear implants (CIs) and hearing aids (HAs), they often show language delays. Moreover, little is known about the mechanisms by which children with HL learn words. One mechanism by which typically hearing (TH) children learn words is by acquiring word learning biases such as the "shape bias," that is, generalizing the names of novel solid objects by similarity in shape. In TH children, the shape bias emerges out of regularities in the early vocabulary and, once acquired, has consequences for subsequent vocabulary development.…

Effects of multimedia vocabulary instruction on adolescents with learning disabilities.

The purpose of this experimental study is to investigate the effects of using content acquisition podcasts (CAPs), an example of instructional technology, to provide vocabulary instruction to adolescents with and without learning disabilities (LD). A total of 279 urban high school students, including 30 with LD in an area related to reading, were randomly assigned to one of four experimental conditions with instruction occurring at individual computer terminals over a 3-week period. Each of the four conditions contained different configurations of multimedia-based instruction and evidence-base…

Distractibility and vocabulary deficits in children with spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

This experiment tested the hypothesis that children with spina bifida and hydrocephalus (SBH) are more distractible than normal children, an … groups performed similarly when there was no irrelevant information, but the SBH children exhibited vocabulary deficiencies when irrelevant items were present. These findings support the original hypothesis of a relationship between distractibility and language deficits.

Language Embedded 3D Gaussians for Open-Vocabulary Scene Querying.

Open-vocabulary querying in 3D space is challenging but essential for scene understanding tasks such as object localization and segmentation. Language embedded scene representations have made progress by incorporating language features into 3D spaces. However, their efficacy heavily depends on neural networks that are resource-intensive in training and rendering. Although recent 3D Gaussians offer efficient and high-quality novel view synthesis, directly embedding language features in them leads to prohibitive memory usage and decreased performance. In this work, we introduce Language Embedded…

Self-reference promotes vocabulary learning in a foreign language.

Encoding information in reference to the self leads to improved memory, a phenomenon termed the self-reference effect. Learning vocabulary in a foreign language (L2) is a challenging memory task, because learning thousands of words is necessary to achieve listening and reading comprehension. The current study examined the efficacy of self-reference encoding for L2 vocabulary learning. In Experiment 1, native Hebrew speakers learned rare English words with a self-reference task and a control condition of translation repetition. In Experiment 2, participants learned with the same self-reference …

Dyslexia as disability or handicap: when does vocabulary matter?

General cognitive ability is still a factor in current definitions of dyslexia despite two decades of research showing little or no relevanc … ture of dyslexia as a disability, general knowledge and ability does relate to an ensuing handicap. Vocabulary is possibly the most closely linked subcomponent of "general knowledge and ability" to reading.
