Chemical drinking water quality in Ghana: water costs and scope for advanced treatment.

To reduce child mortality and improve health in Ghana boreholes and wells are being installed across the country by the private sector, NGO's and the Ghanaian government. Water quality is not generally monitored once a water source has been improved. Water supplies were sampled across Ghana from mostly boreholes, wells and rivers as well as some piped water from the different regions and analysed for the chemical quality. Chemical water quality was found to exceed the WHO guidelines in 38% of samples, while pH varied from 3.7 to 8.9. Excess levels of nitrate (NO(3)(-)) were found in 21% of the…

Legionella monitoring results by water quality characteristics in a large public water system.

Legionella, the causative agent of Legionnaires' disease, is an emerging concern for water utilities. Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC) is a public drinking water supplier, which provides treated surface water to approximately 800,000 customers in New Jersey. To evaluate the occurrence of Legionella in the PVWC distribution system, swab, first draw, and flushed cold water samples were collected from total coliform sites (n = 58) during a summer and winter sampling event. Endpoint PCR detection methods were combined with culture for Legionella detection. Among 58 total coliform sites durin

Phytoplankton and water quality in a Mediterranean drinking-water reservoir (Marathonas Reservoir, Greece).

Phytoplankton and water quality of Marathonas drinking-water Reservoir were examined for the first time. During the study period (July-September 2007), phytoplankton composition was indicative of eutrophic conditions although phytoplankton biovolume was low (max. 2.7 mm³ l⁻¹). Phytoplankton was dominated by cyanobacteria and diatoms, whereas desmids and dinoflagellates contributed with lower biovolume values. Changing flushing rate in the reservoir (up to 0.7% of reservoir's water volume per day) driven by water withdrawal and occurring in pulses for a period of 15-25 days was associated with …

Wildfire Induces Changes in Receiving Waters: A Review With Considerations for Water Quality Management.

Wildfires have increased in frequency in many ecosystems, with implications for human health and the environment, including water quality. Increased fire frequency and urbanization also raise the prospect of fires burning into urban areas, mobilizing pollutants few have considered to date. As a result, water quality managers lack information to anticipate, respond to and potentially mitigate wildfire impacts. Here, we reviewed the scientific literature to assess wildfire effects on response endpoints of a conceptual model linking fire to water quality, quantifying response directionality, magn…

Impact of the safe water system on water quality in cyclone-affected communities in Madagascar.

Cyclone Hudah struck the northeastern coast of Madagascar in the spring of 2000. Over a 5-month period, 11 700 relief kits consisting of bottles of water disinfectant and foldable jerry cans were distributed to the affected population. Five months after the cyclone, a survey was conducted in 12 villages to determine the impact of these relief kits on water quality. Seventy-six percent of the surveyed households reported using jerry cans, and 65% reported using the disinfectant. Stored water in households using both products had significantly less microbiological contamination than stored water…

Internet of Things-Enabled Water Quality Monitoring System.

Water quality monitoring protects human health, aquatic habitats, and sustainable water resource management. Manual sampling and laboratory testing are laborious, time-consuming, and unsuited for continuous water quality monitoring. A proof-of-concept IoT-Enabled Water Quality Monitoring System (IoT-WQMS) that uses an IoT-based sensor architecture and machine learning for intelligent water quality evaluation is presented in this work. The framework predicts water potability using pH, hardness, total dissolved solids, chloramines, sulfate, conductivity, organic carbon, trihalomethanes, and turb…

Adversarial susceptibility analysis for water quality prediction models.

Water quality is a critical factor for human health and environmental sustainability. Rapid urbanization and industrialization have led to significant water contamination, increasing the prevalence of waterborne diseases. This study investigates the presence of pathogens in water sources across the Gujarat region, utilizing machine learning models to analyze contamination patterns. Various classifiers, including HistGradientBoosting, Random Forest, AdaBoost, Bagging, Decision Tree, and LSTM, were employed to predict water quality and identify pathogens. Among these, the Random Forest and Baggi…

Water quality prediction based on Naïve Bayes algorithm.

In the fast-changing world with increased water demand, water pollution, environmental problems, and related data, information on water quality and suitability for any purpose should be prompt and reliable. Traditional approaches often fail in the attempt to predict water quality classes and new ones are needed to handle a large amount or missing data to predict water quality in real time. One of such approaches is machine-learning (ML) based prediction. This paper presents the results of the application of the Naïve Bayes, a widely used ML method, in creating the prediction model. The propose…

Water exercises and quality of life during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: In Brazil, concern with the quality of life of pregnant women is one of the points emphasized in the Program for the Humanization of Prenatal Care and Childbirth launched in 2000. However, there are few references in the literature on the role of either land or water-based physical exercise on women's quality of life during pregnancy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a physical exercise program of water aerobics on the quality of life (QOL) of sedentary pregnant women. METHODS: A comparative observational study involving sedentary low-risk pregnant women be

Development of freshwater water-quality criteria for perchlorate.

The anion perchlorate (ClO4-) is an oxidizing component commonly used in solid propellants for rockets and missiles; in explosives, flares, fireworks, chemical processes, and automobile air-bag inflators; and for other assorted uses. With recent advances in analytical detection capability, perchlorate has been found in a variety of ground and surface waters throughout the United States. Because perchlorate has been associated with thyroid problems in humans and may have similar effects on wildlife, it is desirable to develop a water-quality criterion to assist in identifying concentrations of

Water Quality and Kidney Health in Farming Communities.

Since the turn of the century, there has been an increase in the frequency of chronic interstitial nephritis in agricultural communities. This is particularly evident in young farm workers from equatorial regions, where the prevalence of chronic kidney disease cannot be explained by classical risk determinants or exposure to heat stress alone. Potentially causal agents have included organic and inorganic drinking water contaminants. This review explores geographic variability in exposure to these drinking water contaminants, with an emphasis on understanding their role in kidney injury in the

Water quality parameters associated with prevalence of Legionella in hot spring facility water bodies.

Some species of Legionella are recognized as opportunistic potential human pathogens, such as Legionella pneumophila, which causes legionnaires disease. Indeed, outbreaks of legionellosis are frequently reported in areas in which the organism has been spread via aerosols from contaminated institutional water systems. Contamination in hot tubs, spas and public baths are also possible. As a result, in this study, we investigated the distribution of Legionella at six hot spring recreation areas throughout Taiwan. Legionella were detected in all six hot spring recreation areas, as well as in 20 of
