[Nodal x-ray lymphangiography and therapy of central lymphatic leakage].

BACKGROUND: Transnodal x‑ray lymphangiography has become increasingly important in recent years as it enables precise visualization of the anatomy, function and pathologies of the central lymphatic system. It is usually performed after ultrasound-guided puncture of a lymph node with injection of an oily contrast medium. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to present the basic principles of transnodal x‑ray lymphangiography and the interventional treatment options for central lymphatic pathologies. RESULTS: Regardless of the specific cause of the lymphatic pathology, transnodal lymphangiograp

Photodynamic Therapy for X-ray-Induced Radiation-Resistant Cancer Cells.

Radiotherapy, in which X-rays are commonly used, is one of the most effective procedures for treating cancer. However, some cancer cells become resistant to radiation therapy, leading to poor prognosis. Therefore, a new therapeutic method is required to prevent cancer cells from acquiring radiation resistance. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a cancer treatment that uses photosensitizers, such as porphyrin compounds, and low-powered laser irradiation. We previously reported that reactive oxygen species (ROS) derived from mitochondria induce the expression of a porphyrin transporter (HCP1) and tha

AI-Augmented Images for X-Ray Guiding Radiation Therapy Delivery.

Cancer accounts for nearly 10 million deaths in 2020 and is a leading cause of death worldwide. Radiation therapy is an effective modality to cure cancer. The ultimate goal of successful radiation therapy is to accurately deliver a safe and therapeutic dose of radiation to cancerous target cells while limiting radiation to the healthy tissue in the beam pathway and the surrounding normal tissue. With advancing radiation treatment technology, better imaging techniques are imperative for safe, high-dose delivery. Artificial intelligence developments on image-guided radiation therapy technologies

Synchrotron radiation soft X-ray microscopy and low energy X-ray fluorescence to reveal elemental changes in spermatozoa treated with photobiomodulation therapy.

Male infertility is a worldwide clinical issue that increases the number of couples resorting to assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) to achieve pregnancy. Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) is a promising technique that can biostimulate cells and tissues and it is currently successfully employed to enhance the sperm motility in vitro. Nevertheless, its use has been so far restricted to the research field. In the present work, we exploited two PBMT protocols at an 800 nm wavelength on sperm derived from infertile individuals, detecting an increase in sperm motility 1 hour after irradiation

Intracavitary contact X-ray therapy of oral HIV-associated Kaposi's sarcoma.

A retrospective study was performed to assess the efficacy and low mucosal toxicity of intracavitary contact X-ray therapy (ICRT), a proposed treatment of small/medium sized lesions of oral HIV-associated Kaposi's sarcoma (HIV-KS). Twenty-six patients with histologically confirmed oral HIV-KS underwent ICRT in the period 1986-1995. No patient received antiblastic or interferon therapy during the radiotherapy or follow-up periods. ICRT was performed according to the usual technical modalities of contact X-ray therapy, but the end of the source of ionizing radiations was introduced into the oral…

A Feasibility Study of Preclinical Ocular X-Ray FLASH Radiation Therapy.

PURPOSE: Ultrahigh-dose-rate radiation therapy (FLASH RT) has not previously been studied for the treatment of ocular targets. This work describes the feasibility of ocular FLASH irradiation of a single mouse eye using kilovoltage x-ray sources with rotating anode technology. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A 75-kW-powered rotating anode kilovoltage x-ray source was implemented for FLASH and conventional (CONV) dose-rate irradiation of superficial targets in small animals. A docking immobilization device was designed to facilitate irradiation of an individual mouse eye. Mouse positioning reproducibili

Organic phosphorescent nanoscintillator for low-dose X-ray-induced photodynamic therapy.

X-ray-induced photodynamic therapy utilizes penetrating X-rays to activate reactive oxygen species in deep tissues for cancer treatment, which combines the advantages of photodynamic therapy and radiotherapy. Conventional therapy usually requires heavy-metal-containing inorganic scintillators and organic photosensitizers to generate singlet oxygen. Here, we report a more convenient strategy for X-ray-induced photodynamic therapy based on a class of organic phosphorescence nanoscintillators, that act in a dual capacity as scintillators and photosensitizers. The resulting low dose of 0.4 Gy and

Mortality among patients with ankylosing spondylitis not given X-ray therapy.

We investigated age-specific mortality rates of 836 patients with ankylosing spondylitis diagnosed during 1935-57. These patients were not given deep x-ray therapy, and thus their mortality was not confounded by possible late effects of radiation. Follow-up observation was to January 1, 1968--on the average, over 13 years from enrollment. Men had higher mortality than women; excess mortality was observed in men for diseases known to be associated with spondylitis, such as ulcerative colitis, nephritis and tuberculosis or other respiratory disease. In addition, their mortality risk relative to …

Breast cancer among women given X-ray therapy for acute postpartum mastitis.

Acute postpartum mastitis (APM) is an inflammatory-infectious condition of the breast, occurring commonly at childbirth or during lactation. A series of 601 women who received x-ray therapy for APM during the 1940's or 1950's have been followed up by mail questionnaire, with medical verification of pertinent conditions, to ascertain their incidences of breast cancer. Control subjects consisted of a series with APM who did not receive irradiation, plus the female siblings of both the APM groups, for a total of 1,239 controls. The groups have been followed up to 45 years; the average was 29 year…
