Low-gain hearing aids for individuals with normal hearing thresholds: a scoping review of listening-related outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: Listening difficulties (LiD) can occur despite normal hearing thresholds, affecting speech understanding in complex environments and increasing listening effort. Audiologists have increasingly considered hearing aids for this population despite supporting evidence remaining unclear. This scoping review examined whether amplification should be used in individuals with normal hearing thresholds with or without LiD. STUDY SAMPLE: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, 67 studies were reviewed: 14 involving adults and/or children with normal hearing thresholds with LiD and 54 involving adul…

Audiology-led model provides efficient and effective access to grommet surgery.

Children with otitis media who are referred to paediatric otorhinolaryngology (ORL) departments often experience significant delays in treatment. Alternate models of care utilising audiologists with extended scopes of practice can potentially improve outcomes in services experiencing difficulties with high demand and insufficient ORL capacity. An Advanced Audiology Practitioner (AAP) service was implemented in Counties Manukau to combat known long wait times for children with otitis media. This study aimed to retrospectively evaluate the clinical and service outcomes of the 165 children referr…

Integrated In-Ear Device for Auditory Health Assessment.

Clinical assessment of the human auditory system is an integral part of evaluating the health of a patient's cognitive processes. Conventional tests performed by audiologists include the Auditory Steady State Response (ASSR) and the Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR), both of which present an audio stimulus to the patient in order to elicit a change in brain state measurable by electroencephalography (EEG) techniques. Spatial monitoring of the electrophysiological activity in the auditory cortex, temporal cortex, and brain stem during auditory stimulus evaluation can be used to pinpoint to loca…

Noise Exposure Questionnaire: A Tool for Quantifying Annual Noise Exposure.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to both occupational and nonoccupational noise is recognized as a risk factor for noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Although audiologists routinely inquire regarding history of noise exposure, there are limited tools available for quantifying this history or for identifying those individuals who are at highest risk for NIHL. Identifying those at highest risk would allow hearing conservation activities to be focused on those individuals. PURPOSE: To develop a detailed, task-based questionnaire for quantifying an individual's annual noise exposure (ANE) arising from both o…

Sudden hearing loss followed by deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in a patient with factor V Leiden mutation.

OBJECTIVE: Factor V Leiden (FVL) is by far the most prevalent inherited thrombophilic abnormality in Western countries, and this genetic condition has been associated with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL). Audiologists should be aware that SSHL may be the precursor of life-threatening thromboembolic events, especially in Caucasians who are more likely to be FVL carriers. DESIGN: Case report. STUDY SAMPLE: A 41-year-old male patient. RESULTS: Although this is not the first report of SSHL in a FVL carrier, it is the first to describe SSHL occurring in a heterozygous FVL carrier who--w…

Unilateral and mild bilateral hearing loss in children: past and current perspectives.

Since the early 1980s, audiologists have become increasingly aware of the potential effect of even mild degrees of hearing loss on the psychoeducational and psychosocial outcomes of children. This review describes some of the key research findings during the past several decades that have led us to our current thinking about unilateral and mild bilateral hearing loss in children. The first section addresses unilateral hearing loss. This is followed by a review of the literature on mild bilateral hearing loss. Specifically, the issues addressed include the significance of permanent mild degrees…
