Biofeedback therapy of essential blepharospasm.

Eight patients with essential blepharospasm were given five consecutive sessions of electromyogram biofeedback from cutaneous electrodes placed over the frontalis muscle. Four of the eight patients demonstrated a 60% or greater reduction in blepharospasm frequency. Posttreatment electromyogram significantly predicted improvement of blepharospasm. These data suggest that electromyogram biofeedback may provide a therapeutic alternative to the treatment of this disabling condition.

Evaluation of electromyographic biofeedback as an adjunct to therapeutic exercise in treating the lower extremities of hemiplegic patients.

The following controlled, preliminary investigation was designed to determine whether electromyographic biofeedback, in conjunction with therapeutic exercise, could influence the reacquisition of functional lower extremity movements in chronic hemiplegic patients. Both the control (standardized therapeutic exercise regimen) and experimental (therapeutic exercise regimen combined with electromyographic biofeedback) groups improved in ankle active range of motion; only the experimental group significantly shortened its timed ambulation over a carpeted surface. One patient in the experimental gro

Voluntary heart-rate changes mediated by muscle tension and respiration.

20 undergraduates completed heart-rate mediation treatments (isometric exercise, relaxation, hyperventilation, and hypoventilation) with and without feedback. Heart rate increased during tension, decreased with relaxation, and changed even more with feedback. During hyperventilation the heart rates were lower than during hypoventilation, and this difference was even greater during trials with feedback. This paradoxical finding was attributed to the shallowness of the breathing. Additional data from an experiment on voluntary heart-rate control (n = 31) without feedback and one with biofeedback

Bell palsy: muscle reeducation by electromyograph feedback.

The present case study investigated the efficacy of feedback in restoring muscle control to facial muscles which had been affected by Bell palsy. The subject, a woman, was provided an analog tone as feedback for modifying the muscle activity on the paralyzed (right) side of her face to match that of her nonaffected (left) side. The results showed a statistically significant shift in muscle activity in masseter, zygomaticus, and orbicularis oculi muscles. Post-treatment levels closely approximated the nonaffected side, and resulted in more normal facial characteristics with respect to jaw posit

[Bloating].

Bloating is one of the most common and troublesome problems in a large proportion of patients with gastrointestinal disorders but the mechanism is not completely understood. Several factors, including gas-producing intestinal microbiota, disturbed handling of intestinal gas, visceral hypersensitivity, abnormal viscero-somatic responses, fermentable diet, and psychological factors, have been suggested as mechanisms. For an assessment, thorough medical history-taking and physical examination are the first steps. On the other hand, organic disorders should always be considered first for a differe

[Behavior therapy in gastrointestinal functional disorders].

Almost all functions of the gastrointestinal tract have been shown to be under central nervous control and to respond to environmental factors such as stress. It is, therefore, not surprising that disturbed gastrointestinal functions may be altered through psychological therapy approaches. For motor dysfunctions of the esophagus and functional dyspepsia, there is a lack of behavioral therapy studies, while controlled studies utilizing relaxation techniques, stress management strategies and anxiety treatment have been shown to improve symptoms and prevent recurrence in reflux esophagitis and pe

[Headache in children: also a problem for child and adolescent psychiatry? Pathogenesis, comorbidity, therapy].

Headache is a recurrent somatic complaint in childhood and adolescence. In recent decades headache prevalence has increased while the age of onset has decreased. In most cases headache can be categorized as migraine or tension-type headache without significant organic pathology, i.e. head trauma, structural lesion, etc. Diagnosis according to the criteria of the International Headache Society is based on subjective reports by patients and their parents. The basic tools of clinical assessment are history, physical examination and a headache diary. Laboratory tests, including electroencephalogra

Autonomic Non-Responsiveness in HRV Biofeedback: A Narrative Conceptual Review and Future Directions for AI-Guided Closed-Loop Adaptive Systems.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is widely used as a non-invasive marker of autonomic regulation and physiological adaptability, with relevance across cardiovascular, metabolic, neuropsychiatric, and stress-related conditions. HRV biofeedback has emerged as a non-pharmacological intervention intended to influence autonomic function through paced breathing, resonance-frequency training, and real-time physiological feedback. Although this approach has shown promise in improving stress regulation, emotional symptoms, autonomic balance, and selected cardiovascular outcomes, its effects are not consist

EFFECTIVENESS OF PERINEAL PELVIS REHABILITATION COMBINED WITH BIOFEEDBACK AND RADIOFREQUENCY DIATHERMY (RDF) IN ANORECTAL FUNCTIONAL PAIN SYNDROMES ASSOCIATED WITH PARADOXICAL CONTRACTION OF THE LEVATOR ANI MUSCLES. A PROSPECTIVE STUDY.

•Anorectal functional pain syndrome is a very often disabling disease with a consequent significant negative impact on the patient's quality of life. Chronic proctalgia, in many patients, is secondary to the paradoxical contraction of the pelvic floor and associated with a dissynergy between the thorax-abdomen and the pelvic floor. •The use of radiofrequency diathermy with a system of static electrodes associated with biofeedback represents a valid rehabilitation option for those patients suffering from anorectal functional pain syndrome because it reduces pain and paradoxical contraction of t

A Survey of Speech-Language Pathologists' Applications of Motor Learning Principles in Dysphagia Therapy in Adults in India.

PURPOSE: In the study, we investigated whether speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in India use practice and feedback conditions of motor learning principles (MLPs), including biofeedback, in dysphagia therapy in adults using a problem-solution approach. METHOD: Based on a literature review and clinical experience, we developed and validated a hypothetical case involving an adult with dysphagia (representing the problem) and a purpose-built 22-item questionnaire (representing the solution). We distributed the questionnaire electronically by sending an e-mail to 2,069 SLPs and also published a

The Efficacy of Biofeedback Therapy in Patients with Solitary Rectal Ulcer and Dyssynergic Defecation.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of solitary rectal ulcer (SRU) is challenging and controversial; generally, no response to conventional treatments can be obtained, particularly in patients with dyssynergic defecation (DD). We assessed the efficiency of biofeedback therapy (BFT) in patients who did not respond to conservative treatments and had coexistence of SRU and DD. METHODS: BFT responses, as well as anorectal manometry and rectoscopy results of 20 patients with the coexistence of SRU and DD, were assessed. RESULTS: Mean age was 32.5 years. Of the patients, 12 were female, and 8 of them were m

Improving the Technique of Pelvic Floor Muscle Contraction in Active Nulliparous Women Attending a Structured High-Low Impact Aerobics Program-A Randomized Control Trial.

Learning the correct technique of performing pelvic floor muscle (PFM) exercises is a very important factor influencing the effectiveness of this muscle group training. Correctly performed PFM contractions are involved in the urinary continence mechanism. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that a six-week high-low impact aerobics program, supported by one EMG biofeedback session and pelvic floor muscle training, improves the technique of PFM contraction. Participants were 42 active nulliparous women (age 22 ± 2 years, mean ± SD), randomly allocated into intervention (n = 18) and control (
