Negative density-dependence buffers against mismatch-induced population decline in the Sinai baton blue butterfly.

Phenological mismatches caused by climate change pose a major threat to global biodiversity, yet relatively few studies have reported population declines resulting from mismatch. It has been hypothesised that density effects may underlie this lack of observed responses by buffering against mismatch-induced population decline. We developed an individual-based model of the critically endangered Sinai baton blue butterfly (Pseudophilotes sinaicus) and its hostplant Sinai thyme (Thymus decussatus), parameterised using real field data, to test this hypothesis. Our model showed that the baton blue e

White butterfly (Clerodendrum volubile) leaf extract protects against carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatotoxicity in rats.

Currently, there is increasing attention towards flavonoids and phenolic compounds of plant origin because of their association with decrease in the incidence of cardiovascular diseases and different types of cancer. The present study investigates the protective effect of Clerodendrum volubile (C. volubile) methanolic extracts against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Control rats (group I) received olive oil (1 mL/kg, i.p.), group II received CCl4 in olive oil (1 ml/kg, i.p.) to induce hepatotoxicity, groups III, IV and V were pretreated with leaf extract of C. volub

The combined effect of two mutations that alter serially homologous color pattern elements on the fore and hindwings of a butterfly.

BackgroundThe ability for serially homologous structures to acquire a separate identity has been primarily investigated for structures dependent on Hox gene input but is still incompletely understood in other systems. The fore and hindwings of butterflies are serially homologous structures as are the serially homologous eyespots that can decorate each of these wings. Eyespots can vary in number between fore and hindwings of the same individual and mutations of large effect can control the total number of eyespots that each of the wings displays. Here we investigate the genetics of a new sponta

[Neurologic pathology in butterfly deformities of the body of the mid-thoracic vertebra (clinico-x-ray-anatomic observation)].

Results of the clinico-roentgenological observation of butterfly-like deformity of the middle dorsal vertebra body (a rare congenital anomaly) are presented. In the presence of an infection the patient developed a spinal pathology (lower central paraparesis, parahypesthesia, disturbances of the functions of pelvic organs). The neurological symptoms were found to be due to an adhesive process in the spinal meninges at the level of the deformed vertebra and the secondary compression-ischemic myelopathy. The treatment consisted in injecting prednisolone under the spinal meninges. The patient's ro

Butterfly Clap-Fling Flight Mechanisms Observed by Schlieren Imaging for the Design of Bio-Inspired Micro Air Vehicles.

This paper investigates the flight kinematics and unsteady aerodynamics of butterfly flight using high-speed schlieren imaging. Butterfly trajectories are reconstructed to examine flight control mechanisms, with particular emphasis on thorax-driven manoeuvring and body reorientation. By reconstructing free-flight trajectories utilizing image recognition algorithms, we isolate the mechanisms of flight control, with particular emphasis on how thoracic oscillation drives manoeuvring and body reorientation. Phase-resolved analysis reveals distinct wingbeat modes, including clap-and-fling motions a

A method for safely resecting anterior butterfly gliomas: the surgical anatomy of the default mode network and the relevance of its preservation.

OBJECTIVE Gliomas invading the anterior corpus callosum are commonly deemed unresectable due to an unacceptable risk/benefit ratio, including the risk of abulia. In this study, the authors investigated the anatomy of the cingulum and its connectivity within the default mode network (DMN). A technique is described involving awake subcortical mapping with higher attention tasks to preserve the cingulum and reduce the incidence of postoperative abulia for patients with so-called butterfly gliomas. METHODS The authors reviewed clinical data on all patients undergoing glioma surgery performed by th

The parasite-host interface in the zonetail butterfly ray, Gymnura zonura (Bleeker), infected with Hexacanalis folifer (Cestoda: Lecanicephalidea).

A wild-caught specimen of the zonetail butterfly ray, Gymnura zonura (Bleeker), harboured numerous specimens of Hexacanalis folifer Cielocha & Jensen, 2011 (Systematic Parasitology, 79, 1-16; Cestoda: Lecanicephalidea) within its spiral intestine. The cestodes were primarily attached in single rows along the base of mucosal folds, each associated with a nodular mucosal thickening. Microscopically, the scolex was embedded within the submucosa and muscularis; the attachment sites were marked by ulceration and necro-proliferative inflammation demarcating the parasite from normal host tissues. Wide antral circumferential vs. ostial pulmonary vein isolation using pulsed field ablation-the butterfly effect.

BACKGROUND: Wide antral circumferential ablation (WACA) in comparison to ostial pulmonary vein (PV) isolation (PVI) has been attributed with improved rhythm outcome. We investigated the feasibility, lesion formation, and rhythm outcome of WACA-PVI in comparison to ostial-PVI using pulsed field ablation (PFA). METHODS: Symptomatic atrial fibrillation (AF) patients (69 years, 67% male; 67% paroxysmal AF) were prospectively enrolled into our single-center registry and underwent first-time ostial-PFA or WACA-PFA, N = 15 each. In all patients, eight pulse trains (2 kV/2.5 s, bipolar, biphasic, 4×

Copy Number Variation and Expression Analysis Reveals a Nonorthologous Pinta Gene Family Member Involved in Butterfly Vision.

Vertebrate (cellular retinaldehyde-binding protein) and Drosophila (prolonged depolarization afterpotential is not apparent [PINTA]) proteins with a CRAL-TRIO domain transport retinal-based chromophores that bind to opsin proteins and are necessary for phototransduction. The CRAL-TRIO domain gene family is composed of genes that encode proteins with a common N-terminal structural domain. Although there is an expansion of this gene family in Lepidoptera, there is no lepidopteran ortholog of pinta. Further, the function of these genes in lepidopterans has not yet been established. Here, we explo

Selective [3+1] Fragmentations of P4 by "P" Transfer from a Lewis Acid Stabilized [RP4 ]- Butterfly Anion.

Two [3+1] fragmentations of the Lewis acid stabilized bicyclo[1.1.0]tetraphosphabutanide Li[Mes*P4 ⋅ BPh3 ] (Mes*=2,4,6-tBu3 C6 H2 ) are reported. The reactions proceed by extrusion of a P1 fragment, induced by either an imidazolium salt or phenylisocyanate, with release of the transient triphosphirene Mes*P3 , which was isolated as a dimer and trapped by 1,3-cyclohexadiene as a Diels-Alder adduct. DFT quantum chemical computations were used to delineate the reaction mechanisms. These unprecedented pathways grant access to both P1 - and P3 -containing organophosphorus compounds in two simple s

The role of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) to detect minimal residual disease in locally advanced gastroesophageal carcinoma: the BUTTERFLY study.

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in perioperative and neoadjuvant strategies, patients with locally advanced gastroesophageal cancers remain at high risk of recurrence after curative intent treatment. No validated biomarkers are available to detect minimal residual disease (MRD) or to guide post-operative risk-adapted management. Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) has emerged as a noninvasive tool for disease monitoring; single-parameter or tumor-informed assays, however, may lack sensitivity in low-tumor burden settings. Multimodal, tumor-agnostic approaches may overcome these limitations. METHODS: T
