Outbreak of pulmonary histoplasmosis involving a group of four Polish travellers returning from Ecuador.

Exploring caves is, without doubt, a very exciting adventure; however, it carries some dangers. Three of four travellers were admitted to hospital with lung changes after returning from Ecuador, successively. Epidemiological studies revealed that the travellers visited caves infested by bats, and had contact with bats' guano. They gave a history of fever, fatigue, myalgia, dry cough, and chest pain during the stay or just after returning from Ecuador. In two patients, symptoms persisted in mild nature. Chest X-ray films showed diffuse nodules (coin-like lesions) in the lungs in each case. Hist…

Vacuum assisted delivery in Ecuador for prolonged second stage of labor: maternal-neonatal outcome.

BACKGROUND: In South America, and particularly Ecuador, cesarean section rates have risen markedly over the past five years. The associated increases in maternal morbidity and healthcare costs indicate the need for alternative strategies. Operative vaginal delivery is minimally utilized in Ecuador, as neither vacuum nor forceps have been available. OBJECTIVE: As vacuum delivery was recently introduced to our clinical service, we sought to examine our initial experiences (i.e., maternal and neonatal outcome) with operative vaginal delivery for prolonged second stage of labor. METHODS: Followi…

Taeniasis-cysticercosis in Southern Ecuador: assessment of infection status using multiple laboratory diagnostic tools.

Taenia solium-taeniasis and cysticercosis were studied in the human and porcine populations of a rural community in the Southern Ecuadorian Andes. From the 1059 inhabitants, 800 serum samples and 958 stool samples could be collected. In addition, 646 from the estimated 1148 pigs were tongue inspected. Circulating antigen was detected by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (Ag-ELISA) in 2.25% of the human population, whereas intestinal taeniasis was detected in 1.46% by the formalin-ether technique. Following treatment and recovery of tapeworm fragments these were all identified as T. solium. Por…

Antimicrobial resistance in Ecuador, 2000-2024: a systematic review within a One Health framework.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global public health threat, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. In Ecuador, AMR research has expanded during the last two decades, but evidence remains fragmented and largely restricted to the human health sector. We systematically reviewed studies reporting laboratory-confirmed bacterial resistance in Ecuador between 2000 and 2024, including evidence from human, animal, food, and environmental sources. Eighty studies met the inclusion criteria. Most were hospital-based and conducted in urban areas, with limited evidence from rural, Amaz…

Backyard Livestock Guinea Pigs Are Reservoirs for Leptospira Shedding in Rural Households from Ecuador.

Guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) are bred as livestock in South American countries from the Andean region, including Ecuador. Despite their importance for the local rural economy, no public health management guidelines have ever been implemented for guinea pig farming. Moreover, several reports have shown the carriage of diverse zoonotic pathogens in livestock guinea pigs, including respiratory and enteric pathogens, or Toxoplasma gondii. Leptospirosis, a zoonotic disease caused by bacteria from Leptospira genus, is endemic in Ecuador and has multiple animal reservoirs, with rodents considered to…

Two new species of Riethia Kieffer, 1917 from Chile and Ecuador (Chironomidae: Chironominae, Pseudochironomini).

Two new species of Riethia Kieffer, 1917, R. chilensis sp. nov. (Chile) and R. ecuadoriensis sp. nov. (Ecuador) are described and figured as adult males. The two species differ from the presumable closest relative, R. truncatocaudata (Edwards, 1931), by uniformly coloured legs, without bands, and stout curved hypopygial superior volsellae; they can be separated from all other Riethia by the shape and setation pattern of the inferior volsella. The two new species differ from each other in body colouration, including abdomen, and in the presence/absence of microtrichia on superior volsellae.

Distribution of blaCTX-M-gene variants in E. coli from different origins in Ecuador.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous preterm birth (sPTB) is a major contributor to infant mortality and its etiology remains poorly understood. Host immunity and maternal stress may play a role in the pathogenesis of sPTB but mechanisms are poorly delineated. Antimicrobial proteins in the cervicovaginal space, such as beta defensins, modulate immune responses to bacteria and have been shown to modulate the risk of sPTB from non-optimal microbiota. While stress is known to induce immunological changes, no study has examined the interplay between maternal stress and the immune response in association with s

First molecular identification of hydatid tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato G6/G7 in Ecuador.

Echinococcosis is a zoonotic parasitic illness that can cause significant disabilities, and even death for sick people. The disease is caused by the larval stage of cestodes belonging to the Echinococcus genus. In this study, multiple hydatid cysts were excised from an infected porcine liver. The identification of the parasitic species was made by the morphometric assessment of rostellar hooks and molecular detection of ribosomal DNA extant in protoscoleces of the hydatid sand. Rostellar hooks presented an average length of 27.4 µm by optical microscopy. Parasite DNA were detected in samples o
