A water-soluble iron-porphyrin complex capable of rescuing CO-poisoned red blood cells.

We describe herein a small-molecule platform that exhibits key properties needed by an antidote for CO poisoning. The design features an iron-porphyrin complex with bulky substituents above and below the macrocyclic plane to provide a hydrophobic pocket for CO binding and to prevent the formation of inactive oxo-bridged dimers. Peripheral charged groups impart water solubility. We demonstrate that the Fe(II) complex of a porphyrin with 2,6-diphenyl-4-sulfophenyl meso substituents can bind CO, stoichiometrically sequester CO from carboxyhemoglobin, and rescue CO-poisoned red blood cells.

FeS redox power motor for PDS continuous generation of active radicals on efficient degradation and removal of diclofenac: Role of ultrasonic.

Diclofenac (DCF), as a typical representative of PPCPs, has potential ecotoxicity to the water environment. In this study, ultrasound (US) enhanced ferrous sulfide (FeS)-activated persulfate (PDS) technology (US/FeS/PDS) was used to degrade DCF. By comparing the degradation effects of US, US/PDS, FeS/PDS and US/FeS/PDS systems on DCF, this study confirmed the synergy and strengthening effects of US. The influences of single-factor experimental conditions on the US/FeS/PDS system were investigated and optimized. The FeS catalysts before and after the reaction were characterized and analyzed by

Non-psychotropic cannabinoids as inhibitors of TET1 protein.

Non-psychotropic cannabinoids (e.g., cannabidiol, cannabinol and cannabigerol) are contained in numerous alimentary and medicinal products. Therefore, predicting and studying their possible side effects, such as changes in DNA methylation, is an important task for assessing the safety of these products. Interference with TET enzymes by chelating ferrous ions can contribute to the altered methylation pattern. All tested cannabinoids displayed a strong affinity for Fe(II) ions. Cannabidiol and cannabinol exhibited potent inhibitory activities (IC50 = 4.8 and 6.27 μM, respectively) towards the TE

Significant Contribution of Solid Organic Matter for Hydroxyl Radical Production during Oxygenation.

Dark formation of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) from soil/sediment oxygenation has been increasingly reported, and solid Fe(II) is considered as the main electron donor for O2 activation. However, the role of solid organic matter (SOM) in •OH production is not clear, although it represents an important electron pool in the subsurface. In this study, •OH production from oxygenation of reduced solid humic acid (HAred) was investigated at pH 7.0. •OH production is linearly correlated with the electrons released from HAred suspension. Solid HAred transferred electrons rapidly to O2 via the surface-reduc

The Detection of Divalent Iron and Reactive Oxygen Species During Ferroptosis with the Use of a Dual-Reaction Turn-On Fluorescent Probe.

PURPOSE: Ferroptosis, a programmed cell death modality, is an iron-dependent, non-apoptosis pathway that is characterized by the upregulation of divalent iron and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. However, the sensitive and rapid detection to track changes in ferroptosis is challenging, partially due to the lack of methods for monitoring the Fe(II) accumulation and ROS generation. PROCEDURES: Herein, we reported a dual-reaction fluorescent probe DR-1 with turn-on response, which realized the simultaneous visualizing of Fe(II) and ROS with a single probe. The structure of fluorescence quen

Transport and transformation of arsenic in coastal aquifer at the scenario of seawater intrusion followed by managed aquifer recharge.

Release of contaminants from aquifers at the coastal area is of increasing concern, but remains unclear due to the complex groundwater dynamics and hydrochemistry. Specifically, frequently occurring seawater intrusion and the subsequent engineering measures of managed aquifer recharge (MAR) could alter the groundwater regime, which might affect the fate and behaviors of contaminants. In this work, we investigated the transport and transformation of arsenic (As) in the coastal aquifer at the scenario of seawater intrusion followed by the injection-based MAR process. Results showed that seawater

Vivianite scaling in wastewater treatment plants: Occurrence, formation mechanisms and mitigation solutions.

The presence of soluble iron and phosphorus in wastewater sludge can lead to vivianite scaling. This problem is not often reported in literature, most likely due to the difficult identification and quantification of this mineral. It is usually present as a hard and blue deposit that can also be brown or black depending on its composition and location. From samples and information gathered in 14 wastewater treatment plants worldwide, it became clear that vivianite scaling is common and can cause operational issues. Vivianite scaling mainly occurred in 3 zones, for which formation hypotheses wer

Geobacter Autogenically Secretes Fulvic Acid to Facilitate the Dissimilated Iron Reduction and Vivianite Recovery.

Biosynthetic organic matters, such as humus, play important roles in iron and phosphorus cycling in soil and aquatic systems. As an important member of humus, fulvic acid (FA) is ubiquitous in different environmental media, such as water, soil, and sediments. In this study, we fabricated the network among phosphate supply, metabolism pathway of FA, iron reduction, and vivianite recovery at the batch scale. Both the vivianite recovery performance and the content of biosynthetic FA were positively related to the phosphorus dosage. The highest vivianite formation efficiency of 53% was obtained in

Removal of elemental mercury from flue gas using the magnetic Fe-containing carbon prepared from the sludge flocculated with ferrous sulfate.

The sewage sludge flocculated with ferrous sulfate (SFS) was prepared by one-step pyrolysis to obtain magnetic Fe-containing carbon. Results showed that only a small amount of FexOy as well as extremely weak magnetism were observed at pyrolysis temperatures of less than 500 °C. SFS tended to exhibit intensive agglomeration, leading to the drastic increase of the crystalline-phase particle size at high pyrolysis temperature. The optimal pyrolysis temperature is 700 °C, corresponding to the production of some sulfides, an optimal content of FexOy, and a suitable BET surface. Hg0 removal efficien

Effect of iron sulphate on the phosphorus speciation from agro-industrial sludge based and sewage sludge based compost.

Composting is considered a suitable process for organic waste management, providing stable products that can be safely utilized as fertilizers, but little is still known about the variation of phosphorous (P) extractability during the stabilization process. In this work, sequential chemical extraction (SCE) with increasing strength extractants (H2O; 0.5M NaHCO3 pH 8.5; 0.1M NaOH, 1M HCl) was applied for P speciation over 56days of composting of either agro-industrial or urban wastewater sludge with green waste treated (AICFe+; SSCFe+) or not (AICFe-; SSCFe-) with FeSO4 (2%v/v). Composting stro

Arrested α-hydride migration activates a phosphido ligand for C-H insertion.

Bulky tris(carbene)borate ligands provide access to high spin iron(ii) phosphido complexes. The complex PhB(MesIm)3FeP(H)Ph is thermally unstable, and [PPh] group insertion into a C-H bond of the supporting ligand is observed. An arrested α-hydride migration mechanism suggests increased nucleophilicity of the phosphorus atom facilitates [PPh] group transfer reactivity.

[Ferrous sulfate: acute poisoning with a frequent use drug].

The iron is the main component of hemoglobin and is also part of myoglobin and enzymes. Its deficit is the most common cause of nutritional anemia in humans. The use of iron salts is very common in children, because they are indicated for prophylaxis and treatment of iron deficiency anemia. The availability in households and the emergence of flavored formulations that promote adherence to treatment, greatly assist in this type of poisoning. Usually, the overdose is considered a low hazard, because it is a mineral supplement added in many of the baby food. Iron in free state is able of producin

Light-Inducible Bispecific DNAzymes Reveal Mitochondrial Fe2+/Fe3+ Dynamics During Ferroptosis.

Mitochondrial iron redox homeostasis plays critical roles in cellular function and disease progression; however, spatiotemporal measurement of Fe2+ and Fe3+ dynamics in mitochondria remains challenging, largely due to limited analytical tools. Here we report a light-inducible bispecific DNAzyme sensor (LiBD) that enables simultaneous and spatiotemporally controlled imaging of mitochondrial labile Fe2+ and Fe3+ in living cells and in vivo. LiBD integrated two orthogonal iron-specific DNAzymes into a single DNA scaffold, incorporating photocleavable (PC) linkers, rendering DNAzymes inactive unti

Colorimetric detection of leucine aminopeptidase based on p-aminophenol-mediated redox cycling between Fe3+-ferrozine and tris(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine.

BACKGROUND: Leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) is a promising biomarker for the detection and diagnosis of liver diseases encompassing liver cancer and liver injury. Existing assays for LAP activity have limitations, as most of them rely on substrates that are cumbersome to synthesize and fail to amplify the detection signal. RESULTS: Initially, L-pAP was synthesized to serve as a substrate for LAP through the condensation of p-aminophenol (pAP) with leucine. LAP triggered the hydrolyzation of L-pAP into pAP, which then reduced colourless Fe3+-ferrozine to purple Fe2+-ferrozine. Upon addition of tr

Nitric Oxide Binding to Ferric and Ferrous Porphyrins Encapsulated in the Cyclodextrin Nanocavities in Aqueous Solution.

meso-Tetraphenylporphyrin Fe(II/III) complexes encapsulated in a cyclodextrin (CD) dimer with pyridine (P) or imidazole (I) ligands have been developed as synthetic heme models in water. Here, the binding of nitric oxide (NO) to the models (hemoCD-P and hemoCD-I) was investigated. The introduction of NO gas into the hemoCD complexes formed stable ferric and ferrous NO adducts. UV-vis, electron paramagnetic resonance, and resonance Raman measurements revealed the presence of six-coordinate ferric complexes and five- and six-coordinate ferrous complexes. The reductive nitrosylation from Fe(III)N

A point-of-care testing platform for non-enzymatic lactate determination.

Lactate, a crucial metabolic indicator, plays a vital role in diagnostics and treatment monitoring. Current lactate analysis often relies on enzymatic methods, employed in both clinical analyzers and point-of-care testing (POCT) devices. While these enzymatic assays offer selectivity and sensitivity, they suffer from limitations including higher costs, shorter lifetime, and reduced stability, particularly impacting POCT applications. This work introduces a novel POCT platform for lactate determination, utilizing a non-enzymatic approach. This analytical system is based on the photoreduction of

Influence of the second coordination sphere on O2 activation by a nonheme iron(II) thiolate complex.

The synthesis and characterization of a new ligand, 1-(bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl) amino)-2-methylpropane-2-thiolate (BPAMe2S-) and its nonheme iron complex, FeII(BPAMe2S)Br (1), is reported. Reaction of 1 with O2 at -20 °C generates a high-spin iron(III)-hydroxide complex, [FeIII(OH)(BPAMe2S)(Br)] (2), that was characterized by UV-vis, 57Fe Mössbauer, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies, and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to support the spectroscopic assignments. In a previous report (J. Am. Chem.

Cysteine-Facilitated Cr(VI) reduction by Fe(II/III)-bearing phyllosilicates: Enhancement from In-Situ Fe(II) generation.

Structural Fe in phyllosilicates represents a crucial and potentially renewable reservoir of electron equivalents for contaminants reduction in aquatic and soil systems. However, it remains unclear how in-situ modification of Fe redox states within Fe-bearing phyllosilicates, induced by electron shuttles such as naturally occurring organics, influences the fate of contaminants. Herein, this study investigated the processes and mechanism of Cr(VI) reduction on two typical Fe(II/III)-bearing phyllosilicates, biotite and chlorite, in the presence of cysteine (Cys) at circumneutral pH. The experim
