Density Modulations in Active Colloidal Systems through Orthogonal Propulsion Control and Sensory Delays.

Recent advancements in active colloidal systems aim to mimic key characteristics of biological microswimmers, particularly their adaptive motility in response to environmental changes. While many approaches rely on externally imposing a variable propulsive force, achieving true autonomous and self-regulating adaptation to the environment remains limited. In this study, we take a step in this direction and develop Janus microswimmers driven by electrohydrodynamic flows that autonomously adjust their propulsion dynamics in response to varying illumination and exposure to chemical agents. Our Jan

On the relationship between cutting and tearing in soft elastic solids.

Unique observations of cutting energy in silicone elastomers motivate a picture of soft fracture that qualitatively and quantitatively links far-field tearing with push cutting for the first time. For blades of decreasing tip radii, the cutting energy decreases until it reaches a plateau that suggests a threshold for failure. A super-molecular damage zone, necessary for new surface creation, is defined using the tip radius at the onset of this threshold. Modifying the classic Lake-Thomas theory, in which failure occurs within a molecular plane, to this super-molecular zone provides order-of-ma

Unification of optimal targeting methods in transcranial electrical stimulation.

One of the major questions in high-density transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) is: given a region of interest (ROI) and electric current limits for safety, how much current should be delivered by each electrode for optimal targeting of the ROI? Several solutions, apparently unrelated, have been independently proposed depending on how "optimality" is defined and on how this optimization problem is stated mathematically. The least squares (LS), weighted LS (WLS), or reciprocity-based approaches are the simplest ones and have closed-form solutions. An extended optimization problem can be st

[Angiogenesis in gynecology and obstetrics].

In current scientific discussion, increasing importance is being given to the clinical significance of the new formation of vessels (angiogenesis) in the course of physiological, inflammatory and neoplastic processes. Angiogenesis is best studied in the growth of malignant tumors, since cancer may be regarded as the most important angiogenesis-dependent disease in terms of social and economic aspects. The significance of angiogenesis in gynecological oncology is as follows: 1) Intratumoral vessel density is an indicator for the emergence and growth of malignant tumours and their precursor lesi

Predictors of visual acuity and the relative afferent pupillary defect in optic neuropathy.

The relationships among visual acuity (log MAR), diagnostic category, age, the magnitude of a relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD) in log units, photopic foveal thresholds to white and colored light (dB), and the mean deviation on the Humphrey visual field (dB) were studied in patients with various optic neuropathies. All acuity and dB values were expressed as interocular differences, the majority of cases having normal acuity in the fellow eye. In multiple regression analyses, acuity and RAPD were alternately chosen as the dependent or response variable with all remaining variables servi

Excitatory-inhibitory network in the visual cortex: psychophysical evidence.

At early stages in visual processing cells respond to local stimuli with specific features such as orientation and spatial frequency. Although the receptive fields of these cells have been thought to be local and independent, recent physiological and psychophysical evidence has accumulated, indicating that the cells participate in a rich network of local connections. Thus, these local processing units can integrate information over much larger parts of the visual field; the pattern of their response to a stimulus apparently depends on the context presented. To explore the pattern of lateral in

Experience-dependent plasticity of multiple receptive field properties in lateral geniculate binocular neurons during the critical period.

The visual thalamus serves as a critical hub for feature preprocessing in visual processing pathways. Emerging evidence demonstrates that experience-dependent plasticity can be revealed by monocular deprivation (MD) in the dorsolateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) of the thalamus. However, whether and how this thalamic plasticity induces changes in multiple receptive field properties and the potential mechanisms remain unclear. Using in vivo electrophysiology, here we show that binocular neurons in the dLGN of 4-day MD mice starting at P28 undergo a significant ocular dominance (OD) shift during

Environmental enrichment has antidepressant-like action without improving learning and memory deficits in olfactory bulbectomized rats.

Depression, especially in the elderly, is associated with poor cognitive functioning. Exercise has received much attention in the treatment for depression and also dementia. Here we studied the effect of an enriched environment combined with voluntary exercise (EE/VE) on the olfactory bulbectomized (OBX) rat. The OBX rat is hyperactive in an open field, which is normalized by chronic antidepressant treatment, and suffers from learning and memory impairments. Neurotrophic factors are thought to be involved in the antidepressant action of EE/VE. Hyperactivity and cognitive functioning (both hipp

Electromagnetic purification of endocytic vacuoles and acidosomes from Dictyostelium.

Earlier studies have shown that, in Dictyostelium discoideum, approximately 90% of the vacuolar proton pump (V-H(+)-ATPase) activity is present in a buoyant membrane fraction called "acidosomes." In the presence of Mg2+, acidosomes and endocytic vacuoles copurified on equilibrium sucrose gradients, suggesting their reversible association. The association depended on Mg2+ and cytosolic proteins (H. Padh et al., 1991, J. Biol. Chem. 266, 5514-5520, 12123-12126). To further characterize the putative association of acidosomes and endocytic vacuoles, cells were fed dextran-coated superparamagnetic

Down-regulation of Beclin1 promotes direct cardiac reprogramming.

Direct reprogramming of fibroblasts to alternative cell fates by forced expression of transcription factors offers a platform to explore fundamental molecular events governing cell fate identity. The discovery and study of induced cardiomyocytes (iCMs) not only provides alternative therapeutic strategies for heart disease but also sheds lights on basic biology underlying CM fate determination. The iCM field has primarily focused on early transcriptome and epigenome repatterning, whereas little is known about how reprogramming iCMs remodel, erase, and exit the initial fibroblast lineage to acqu

Determinants of altered sleep-wake rhythmicity in patients treated for nonfunctioning pituitary macroadenomas.

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: In a cohort of 17 patients treated for nonfunctioning pituitary macroadenoma (NFMA), we observed alterations in polysomnographic sleep characteristics and actigraphic sleep-wake rhythmicity, and subjective fatigue, daytime somnolence, and low sleep quality. We aimed to confirm the actigraphic data in a larger scale cohort of NFMA patients, powered to address risk factors for altered rhythmicity, including the effects of hydrocortisone replacement. METHODS: Sleep-wake rhythmicity in treated NFMA patients was measured using actigraphy for 7 days, and subjective sleep qual

Biologic activities of growth hormone secretagogues in humans.

Growth hormone secretagogues (GHSs) are synthetic peptidyl and nonpeptidyl molecules with strong, dose-dependent, and reproducible growth hormone (GH)-releasing activity even after oral administration. GHSs release GH via actions on specific receptors (GHS-R) at the pituitary and, mainly, at the hypothalamic levels. GHSs likely act as functional somatostatin antagonists and meantime enhance the activity of GH-releasing hormone (GHRH)-secreting neurons. The GH-releasing effect of GHSs is independent of gender but undergoes marked age-related variations. Estrogens play a major role in enhancing

Tunable Duplex Semiquantitative Detection of Nucleic Acids with a Visual Lateral Flow Immunoassay Readout.

Quantitative nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) is a key enabling technology for infectious disease management, especially in instances where viral load informs therapeutic decisions. Inadequate access to quantitative NAATs remains a challenge to the successful deployment of antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimens for patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (CHB) in low resourced settings (LRS). Current field-deployable NAATs are generally qualitative (yes/no) rather than quantitative in nature, making them ill-suited for viral load monitoring programs for CHB patients. Here, we report th

Photothermal Microscopy of Coupled Nanostructures and the Impact of Nanoscale Heating in Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy.

The optical properties of plasmonic nanoparticles are strongly dependent on interactions with other nanoparticles, which complicates analysis for systems larger than a few particles. In this work we examined heat dissipation in aggregated nanoparticles, and its influence on surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), through correlated photothermal heterodyne imaging, electron microscopy and SERS measurements. For dimers the per particle absorption cross-sections show evidence of interparticle coupling, however, the effects are much smaller than those for the field enhancements that are importan

Sensory dynamics of visual hallucinations in the normal population.

Hallucinations occur in both normal and clinical populations. Due to their unpredictability and complexity, the mechanisms underlying hallucinations remain largely untested. Here we show that visual hallucinations can be induced in the normal population by visual flicker, limited to an annulus that constricts content complexity to simple moving grey blobs, allowing objective mechanistic investigation. Hallucination strength peaked at ~11 Hz flicker and was dependent on cortical processing. Hallucinated motion speed increased with flicker rate, when mapped onto visual cortex it was independent

The unfolded protein response (UPR) pathway in Cryptococcus.

Unique and evolutionarily conserved signaling pathways allow an organism to sense, respond to, and adapt to internal and external environmental cues at its biological niche. In eukaryotic cells, the unfolded protein response (UPR) pathway regulates endoplasmic reticulum (ER) homeostasis upon exposure to environmental changes causing ER stress. The UPR pathway of Cryptococcus neoformans, an opportunistic fungal pathogen, which causes life-threatening meningoencephalitis in immunocompromised individuals, consists of the evolutionarily conserved Ire1 kinase, a unique bZIP transcription factor, Hx

Effect of fowl adenovirus-1 (IBH isolate) on humoral and cellular immune competency of broiler chicks.

Fowl adenovirus-1 (FAV-1), isolated from field outbreaks of inclusion body hepatitis (IBH), was administered orally to 3-week-old disease-free broiler chicks. Humoral immune competency was evaluated by determining the antibody response of infected chicks to sheep red blood cells (SRBC) and Brucella abortus. FAV-1 infection significantly decreased the antibody response of chicks to B. abortus (T-cell-independent antigen) by decreasing IgM responses, however, the decreased antibody response to SRBC (T-cell-dependent antigen) was statistically non-significant. Bursal index was also found lowered

[Determination of glutathione reductase activity in erythrocytes and whole blood as an indicator of riboflavin nutrition].

Recent developments in riboflavin statis assessment suggest the possibility of satisfactory replacement of the method based on the determination of glutathione reductase (GRe) (EC 1, 6, 4, 2) activity in erythrocytes by one on whole blood. The advantages would be the elimination of the steps of separation and washing of the erythrocytes, which may be of problematic execution under the difficult logistic conditions of field studies. In order to verify the interchangeability of the two methods, we have undertaken a comparison of the results obtained on 81 subjects. Our data show that the results

On-axis and off-axis levitation by a rotating permanent magnet.

A slightly tilted permanent magnet rotating at high speed can induce a magnetic field capable of trapping another permanent magnet in a gravity independent levitated bound state, bypassing Earnshaw's theorem. During levitation, the floater magnet is locked in a conical orbit at the same frequency as the rotor. This rotation allows the sides of the same polarity of each magnet to face each other, which is responsible for the dynamic equilibrium of the floater magnet. Here, we theoretically explain the motion of the floater in-axis and off-axis and highlight levitation stability conditions and t

Morphology controls nonlinear donor acceptor thermodynamics in divinylbenzene-based copolymers.

Understanding how surface morphology governs molecular adsorption remains a fundamental challenge in interfacial science. Here, inverse gas chromatography at infinite dilution is combined with a generalized five-parameter Lewis acid-base model to investigate adsorption on divinylbenzene-based copolymers. Statistical model discrimination demonstrates that nonlinear donor-acceptor coupling and curvature are intrinsic features of polymer adsorption energetics. Independent thermo-geometric analysis further reveals that the adsorbed molecular footprint follows a common quadratic dependence on tempe
