The prevalence of gallbladder stones is higher among patients with chronic kidney disease in Taiwan.

The pathogenesis of gallstone disease is multifactorial. Few studies have focused on gallbladder stones in the chronic kidney disease population in Taiwan. We conducted the current study to determine the prevalence of gallbladder stones in populations with and without chronic kidney disease. This was a hospital-based, cross-sectional study. We retrospectively analyzed the patients receiving periodic health examinations at 1 medical center in Taiwan from 2001 to 2004. In all, 4773 patients were enrolled in the study. Chronic kidney disease was defined as a glomerular filtration rate less than 60

Childbearing, breastfeeding, other reproductive factors and the subsequent risk of hospitalization for gallbladder disease.

BACKGROUND: While parous women are known to be at an increased risk of gallbladder disease, little is known about the effects of other reproductive factors such as breastfeeding, age at menarche and age at menopause. METHODS: The Million Women Study is a prospective cohort study of 1.3 million middle-aged women in England and Scotland recruited from 1996 to 2001. Participants were followed-up by record-linkage for a mean of 6.1 years for admissions to hospital. The adjusted relative risk of hospital admission for cholelithiasis, cholecystitis or cholecystectomy according to parity, breastfeed

Serum ascorbic acid and other correlates of gallbladder disease among US adults.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the correlates of clinical gallbladder disease among US adults and whether serum ascorbic acid levels are associated with a decreased prevalence of gallbladder disease. METHODS: Cross-sectional analyses of data from the Second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were conducted. RESULTS: A total of 384 women (8%) and 107 men (3%) reported a history of gallstone disease, and 347 women (7%) and 81 men (2%) reported a history of cholecystectomy. An inverted U-shaped relation was found between serum ascorbic acid level and clinical gallbladder disease

Gallbladder sensitivity to CCK in duodenal ulcer disease, highly selective and truncal vagotomy.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Following truncal vagotomy, a heightened contractile response of the gallbladder to cholecystokinin (CCK) has been reported in patients. We investigated whether the gallbladder responsiveness to the CCK analog cerulein is also affected in patients with a highly selective vagotomy (HSV) and in duodenal ulcer patients, since most patients had truncal vagotomy for recurrent peptic ulcer disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Gallbladder emptying (cholescintigraphy) and plasma cholecystokinin like immunoreactivity (CCK-LI) levels were studied during infusion of graded doses of the CCK a

Gallbladder disease and colorectal cancer: a two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether a bidirectional causal relationship exists between gallbladder disease and colorectal cancer (CRC) using a two-sample, bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) approach based on genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics. METHODS: We used European-ancestry data from the IEU OpenGWAS project within the UK Biobank. In the forward MR analysis, gallbladder disease was treated as the exposure and CRC as the outcome; in the reverse analysis, genetic liability to CRC was treated as the exposure and gallbladder disease as the outcome. The inverse variance w

Acquired cystic disease-associated renal cell carcinoma mimicking gallbladder carcinoma.

A 58-year-old woman on long-term hemodialysis underwent computed tomography for diabetic foot gangrene, which revealed a mass adjacent to the gallbladder, suggesting gallbladder carcinoma. Magnetic resonance imaging also suggested a gallbladder tumor. At laparotomy, the lesion was found to originate from the right kidney, and right nephrectomy was performed. Histopathological and immunohistochemical findings (AMACR+, CD10+, CK7-) confirmed acquired cystic disease-associated renal cell carcinoma (ACD-RCC). ACD-RCC may present with atypical imaging findings and mimic adjacent organ malignancies

Sigmoid gallbladder in a 38-year-old female with gallstone disease: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The sigmoid gallbladder is a rare anatomic variant characterized by an S-shaped curve in its structure, often stemming from abnormal embryonic development during gestation. This anomaly complicates surgical procedures like cholecystectomy, primarily due to its convoluted shape and potential for misdiagnosis. Case studies indicate that preoperative imaging techniques, including ultrasound and MRCP, are essential for accurate diagnosis and preventing bile duct injuries. Although sigmoid gallbladders are typically asymptomatic unless associated with gallstones, thorough imaging and su

Detection of Gallbladder Disease Types Using Deep Learning: An Informative Medical Method.

Nowadays, despite all the conducted research and the provided efforts in advancing the healthcare sector, there is a strong need to rapidly and efficiently diagnose various diseases. The complexity of some disease mechanisms on one side and the dramatic life-saving potential on the other side raise big challenges for the development of tools for the early detection and diagnosis of diseases. Deep learning (DL), an area of artificial intelligence (AI), can be an informative medical tomography method that can aid in the early diagnosis of gallbladder (GB) disease based on ultrasound images (UI).

Current Operative Approaches to the Diseased Gallbladder. Diagnosis and Management Updates for General Surgeons.

Cholecystitis is a common diagnosis which requires management by general surgeons. Morbidity from cholecystitis is often life-threatening, especially in patients with underlying liver cirrhosis or other medical comorbidities. Diagnosis and management of this disease can vary among providers and hospitals. The decision to utilize a radiological or endoscopic temporizing maneuver in severe acute cholecystitis and the timing of later definitive cholecystectomy are relevant points of discussion within general surgery societies. In the last 5 years, the use of intraoperative ductal imaging by conve

Gallbladder disease and pancreatic cancer risk: a multicentric case-control European study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The overall evidence on the association between gallbladder conditions (GBC: gallstones and cholecystectomy) and pancreatic cancer (PC) is inconsistent. To our knowledge, no previous investigations considered the role of tumour characteristics on this association. Thus, we aimed to assess the association between self-reported GBC and PC risk, by focussing on timing to PC diagnosis and tumour features (stage, location, and resection). METHODS: Data derived from a European case-control study conducted between 2009 and 2014 including 1431 PC cases and 1090 controls. We used

Prenatal diethylstilbestrol exposure and risk of diabetes, gallbladder disease, and pancreatic disorders and malignancies.

Prenatal diethylstilbestrol (DES) exposure is associated with increased risk of hormonally mediated cancers and other medical conditions. We evaluated the association between DES and risk of pancreatic cancer and pancreatic disorders, type 2 diabetes, and gallbladder disease, which may be involved with this malignancy. Our analyses used follow-up data from the US National Cancer Institute DES Combined Cohort Study. Cox proportional hazards models estimated hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) adjusted for age, sex, cohort, body mass index, smoking, and alcohol for the associa

Safety of single-incision robotic cholecystectomy for benign gallbladder disease: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Multiport laparoscopic cholecystectomy (MLC) is the gold standard technique for cholecystectomy. In order to reduce postoperative pain and improve cosmetic results, the application of the single-incision laparoscopic cholecystectomy (SILC) technique was introduced, leading surgeons to face important challenges. Robotic technology has been proposed to overcome some of these limitations. The purpose of this review is to assess the safety of single-incision robotic cholecystectomy (SIRC) for benign disease. METHODS: An Embase and Pubmed literature search was performed in February 201

Association between dietary intake and postlaparoscopic cholecystectomic symptoms in patients with gallbladder disease.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: After cholecystectomy, patients have reported postcholecystectomic syndromes such as abdominal symptoms, dyspepsia, and diarrhea, which suggest a relationship between cholecystectomic symptoms and diet, although the details of this association remain unclear. The present study investigated the hypothesis that dietary intake of nutrients and foods was significantly associated with postcholecystectomic syndromes. METHODS: Gallstone patients (n = 59) who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy were enrolled, and dietary intake and clinical parameters were assessed immediately pos
