Neuroscience, virtual reality and neurorehabilitation: brain repair as a validation of brain theory.

This paper argues that basing cybertherapy approaches on a theoretical understanding of the brain has advantages. On one hand it provides for a rational approach towards therapy design while on the other allowing for a direct validation of brain theory in the clinic. As an example this paper discusses how the Distributed Adaptive Control architecture, a theory of mind, brain and action, has given rise to a new paradigm in neurorehabilitation called the Rehabilitation Gaming System (RGS) and to novel neuroprosthetic systems. The neuroprosthetic system considered is developed to replace the func

A game theoretical approach to optimal control of dual drug delivery for HIV infection treatment.

For human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection treatment, the host immune system and antiviral drugs form a coalition to fight against HIV. Evidence suggests that drug therapy with Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy can effectively prolong the life of the patient because it can reduce the replication of HIV while, at the same time, protecting the CD4+ T cells. The dosages of different drugs, however, are important in determining the success of the treatment. In addition, drug therapy for HIV is complicated by the fact that viruses can mutate, thereby effectively escaping from the attack of

Self-other generalisation shapes social interaction and is disrupted in borderline personality disorder.

Generalising information from ourselves to others, and others to ourselves allows for both a dependable source of navigation and adaptability in interpersonal exchange. Disturbances to social development in sensitive periods can cause enduring and distressing damage to lasting healthy relationships. However, identifying the mechanisms of healthy exchange has been difficult. We introduce a theory of self-other generalisation tested with data from a three-phase social value orientation task - the Intentions Game. We involved humans with (n=50) and without (n=53) a diagnosis of borderline persona

A comparison of consensus and nonconsensus approaches to modeling contraceptive choice behavior.

This paper develops a more general model of contraceptive choice, taking into account a fundamental difference between the condom and the contraceptive pill, the two most commonly used reversible contraceptives in the US. The pill produces a single output of pregnancy prevention, but the condom is an input into a joint production for both pregnancy prevention and disease protection. Since the condom is ultimately used by the male, and the pill by the female, noncooperative game theory is used to model the separate male and female utility functions. Using both Stackelberg and Nash as solution c

Adherence to public institutions that foster cooperation.

Humans typically consider altruism a moral good and condition their social behavior on the moral reputations of others. Indirect reciprocity explains how social norms and reputations support cooperation: individuals cooperate with others who are considered good. Indirect reciprocity works when an institution monitors and publicly broadcasts moral reputations. Here we develop a theory of adherence to public monitoring in societies where individuals are, at first, independently responsible for evaluating the reputations of their peers. Using a mathematical model, we show that adherence to an ins

A game dynamic model for vaccine skeptics and vaccine believers: measles as an example.

Widespread avoidance of Measles-Mumps-Rubella vaccination (MMR), with a consequent increase in the incidence of major measles outbreaks, demonstrates that the effectiveness of vaccination programs can be thwarted by the public misperceptions of vaccine risk. By coupling game theory and epidemic models, we examine vaccination choice among populations stratified into two behavioral groups: vaccine skeptics and vaccine believers. The two behavioral groups are assumed to be heterogeneous with respect to their perceptions of vaccine and infection risks. We demonstrate that the pursuit of self-inter

From temporary event spaces to permanent urban communities: A physical-relational-legacy framework for Olympic Village transformation.

The Olympic Village has evolved over time to become a full-fledged urban system that encompasses not just the temporary housing needs of athletes participating in the Olympic Games but also infrastructure development, governance coordination, sustainability planning, and long-term community transformation. Although there are many studies of Olympic Villages, they typically focus on a single aspect of them such as the physical redevelopment of an area, the way that it was governed during the Olympics, and what happened to the Village after the Games ended. Existing studies have examined various

Physical and verbal abuse, psychosocial difficulties, and social media and gaming addiction among school-aged children and adolescents: A large-scale study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment is a recognized risk factor for digital addiction among adolescents. However, the differential pathways linking specific abuse subtypes to distinct forms of digital addiction through multiple psychosocial mechanisms remain underexplored. OBJECTIVE: Guided by general strain theory, this study examined the parallel mediating roles of four dimensions of psychosocial difficulties (e.g., emotional symptoms, conduct problems, inattention, and peer relationship problems) in the associations between physical and verbal abuse and social media addiction and gaming add

Online Problem Gambling: A Comparison of Casino Players and Sports Bettors via Predictive Modeling Using Behavioral Tracking Data.

In this study, the differences in behavior between two groups of online gamblers were investigated. The first group comprised individuals who played casino games, and the second group comprised those who bet on sports events. The focal point of the study was on problem gambling, and the objective was to identify and quantify both common and distinct traits that are characteristic to casino and sports problem gamblers. To this end, a set of gamblers from the gaming operator LeoVegas was studied. Each gambler was ascribed two binary variables: one separating casino players from sports bettors, a

Fast or stable: Research on dynamic behaviors of duopoly automakers under the background of energy transformation in the automobile industry.

New energy vehicles (NEVs) are crucial way to solving environmental and energy dilemmas. However, the transition from traditional energy vehicles (TEVs) to NEVs is extremely intricate. If the process for TEVs switching to NEVs falls into out order, the automobile industry will be shaken. This paper takes electric vehicles (EVs), representing NEVs, and internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs), representing TEVs, as research objects, and constructs a dynamic Gounod duopoly model for the production decisions of two oligopolistic automakers under the dual credit policy. Combining the nonlinear

Effects of a serious game on undergraduate nursing students' learning motivation, engagement and outcomes in community nursing home visit education: A cluster quasi-experimental study.

AIM: To evaluate the impact of the serious game 'Home Visit Navigator' on undergraduate nursing students' motivation, engagement and learning outcomes during home-visit training. BACKGROUND: Some challenges of traditional community-nursing home-visit education include uneven practical resources, lack of spatial context in textual case studies and a disjunction between theory and practice, affecting student engagement and learning effectiveness. Although serious games enhance engagement, reduce cognitive load and improve learning outcomes, their application in community nursing home-visit teac

Reinforcer pathology of internet-related behaviors among college students: Data from six countries.

Research has demonstrated that repeated engagement in low-effort behaviors that are associated with immediate reward, such as Internet use, can result in a pathological reinforcement process in which the behavior is increasingly selected over other activities due, in part, to a low availability of alternative activities and to a strong preference for immediate rather than delayed rewards (delay discounting). However, this reinforcer pathology model has not been generalized to other Internet-related behaviors, such as online gaming or smartphone use. Given the widespread availability of these t

Effects of physical driving experience on body movement and motion sickness among passengers in a virtual vehicle.

Virtual vehicles (e.g., driving video games) can give rise to visually induced motion sickness. Typically, people drive virtual vehicles. In the present study, we investigated motion sickness among participants who were exposed to virtual vehicles as passengers; that is, they observed vehicle motion, but did not control it. We also asked how motion sickness and the postural precursors of motion sickness might be influenced by participants' previous experience of driving physical vehicles. Participants viewed a recording of a virtual automobile in a driving video game. Drivers were young adults

Behavioral game of quarantine during the monkeypox epidemic: Analysis of deterministic and fractional order approach.

This work concerns the epidemiology of infectious diseases like monkeypox (mpox) in humans and animals. Our models examine transmission scenarios, including transmission dynamics between humans, animals, and both. We approach this using evolutionary game theory, specifically the intervention game-theoretical (IGT) framework, to study how human behavior can mitigate disease transmission without perfect vaccines and treatments. To do this, we use non-pharmaceutical intervention, namely the quarantine policy, which demonstrates the delayed effect of the epidemic. Additionally, we contemplate quar

Causal functional contributions and interactions in the attention network of the brain: an objective multi-perturbation analysis.

Spatial attention is a prime example for the distributed network functions of the brain. Lesion studies in animal models have been used to investigate intact attentional mechanisms as well as perspectives for rehabilitation in the injured brain. Here, we systematically analyzed behavioral data from cooling deactivation and permanent lesion experiments in the cat, where unilateral deactivation of the posterior parietal cortex (in the vicinity of the posterior middle suprasylvian cortex, pMS) or the superior colliculus (SC) cause a severe neglect in the contralateral hemifield. The Iowa Gambling Task and the somatic marker hypothesis: some questions and answers.

A recent study by Maia and McClelland on participants' knowledge in the Iowa Gambling Task suggests a different interpretation for an experiment we reported in 1997. The authors use their results to question the evidence for the somatic marker hypothesis. Here we consider whether the authors' conclusions are justified.

Relative size and agonistic behaviour in the female velvet swimming crab, Necora puber (L.) (Brachyura, Portunidae).

Female velvet swimming crabs (Necora puber) fight readily in the laboratory, with interactions being initiated equally often by the larger and smaller of the two opponents, but with the larger usually being victorious. In 17 out of 65 interactions, however, a smaller crab won against a larger one, and possible reasons for this are discussed. In two respects our results are surprising in the context of insights gained from games theory: firstly, the fights do not show a gradual pattern of escalation through display to overt physical violence; and secondly, fights do not become more costly in te

Rethinking reciprocity.

Reciprocity theory holds a hallowed status in evolutionary social sciences because it provides a way to explain cooperation among unrelated individuals. Theorists have developed a large body of mathematical work based on the iterated prisoner's dilemma game that explores which strategies are evolutionarily stable in a range of conditions, including scenarios involving behavioral errors. However, there is a mismatch between the vigorous pace of theoretical research and the trickle of empirical studies that have tested predictions generated by the theoretical work. Furthermore, findings from the
