The simultaneous occurrence of gestational diabetes and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy affects fetal growth and neonatal morbidity.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes is associated with increased risk of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, but there are limited data on fetal growth and neonatal outcomes when both conditions are present. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the risk of abnormal fetal growth and neonatal morbidity in pregnancies with co-occurrence of gestational diabetes and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. STUDY DESIGN: In a retrospective study of 47,093 singleton pregnancies, we compared the incidence of appropriate for gestational age birthweight in pregnancies affected by gestational diabetes alone, hypertensive

mRNA sequencing analysis and growth inhibitory effects of palbociclib on cell lines from canine histiocytic proliferative disorders.

Canine histiocytic proliferative disorders include aggressive and fatal diseases, such as histiocytic sarcoma (HS) and histiocytosis (SyH). The molecular mechanisms underlying cell proliferation need to be elucidated for the development of effective treatments. In the present study, mRNA expression levels were comprehensively analysed in cell lines derived from localized HS, disseminated HS, SyH and Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) in dogs. Based on the results obtained, the growth inhibitory effects of palbociclib, a CDK4/6 inhibitor, were verified with the cell lines in vitro and in xenog

Comparative Characteristics of Sialoglycans Expression Disorders in the Placental Barrier Structures in Preeclampsia and Fetal Growth Restriction.

We compared the expression profiles of α2,3- and α2,6-sialoglycans in the glycocalyx of the placental barrier structures in early and late forms of preeclampsia and fetal growth restriction using the method of lectin histochemistry. It was found that the expression of α2,3-sialoglycans in the syncytiotrophoblast and fetal endothelium of the terminal villi of the placenta was reduced in preeclampsia in comparison with normal placenta and, on the contrary, was increased in fetal growth restriction. Significant differences were found in both clinical phenotypes of preeclampsia and fetal growth re

The Impact of Gut Microbiome on Metabolic Disorders During Catch-Up Growth in Small-for-Gestational-Age.

OBJECTIVE: Catch-up growth (CUG) in small for gestational age (SGA) leads to increased risk of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases in adults. It remains unclear if microbiota could play an important role in CUG-SGA independent of genetic or nutritional factors. The present study explored the role of gut microbiota in, and its association with, metabolic disorders during CUG-SGA. METHODS: An SGA rat model was established by restricting food intake during pregnancy, and the rats were divided into catch-up growth (CUG-SGA) and non-catch-up growth (NCUG-SGA) groups based on body weight

Transforming growth factor beta 1 869T/C and 915G/C polymorphisms and risk of autism spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) has been found to play a crucial role in early central nervous system development. Several studies have illustrated decreased TGF-β1 levels in sera and brains of autistic children. Two point mutations in the TGF-β1 signal peptide at 869T/C and 915G/C have been reported to influence TGF-β1 expression. The aim of the present study was to investigate the correlation of TGF-β1 polymorphisms and their haplotypes with autism. METHODS: This study was performed on 39 autistic patients and 35 age- and sex-matched normal controls in an Iranian populati

Adequacy of maternal iron status protects against behavioral, neuroanatomical, and growth deficits in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are the leading non-genetic cause of neurodevelopmental disability in children. Although alcohol is clearly teratogenic, environmental factors such as gravidity and socioeconomic status significantly modify individual FASD risk despite equivalent alcohol intake. An explanation for this variability could inform FASD prevention. Here we show that the most common nutritional deficiency of pregnancy, iron deficiency without anemia (ID), is a potent and synergistic modifier of FASD risk. Using an established rat model of third trimester-equivalent binge drink

Patterns of fetal and infant growth are related to atopy and wheezing disorders at age 3 years.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about whether patterns of early growth are associated with altered respiratory and immune development. This study relates prenatal and infant growth patterns to wheeze and atopy at age 3 years. METHODS: Birth weight and length were measured in 1548 children born at term. Conditional fetal head and abdominal circumference growth velocities were calculated from antenatal ultrasound measurements. Conditional postnatal growth velocities were calculated from infant weight, length and adiposity data. Measures of size and conditional growth were related to parental

[Neurodevelopmental (fragile X syndrome) and neurodegenerative (tremor/ataxia syndrome) disorders associated to the 'growth' of a gene].

AIM: To present the latest findings on fragile X syndrome, the first genetic disorder identified to be caused by a new type of mutation called trinucleotide repeat expansion. DEVELOPMENT: Fragile X syndrome is the most common form of inherited mental retardation, is caused by hyperexpansion and hypermethylation of a CGG repeat tract in the FMR1 gene. In the first section we will discuss the various aspects of the gene mutation and the gene product, its phenotypic consequences in mutation carriers, diagnostic methodology, epidemiology, prevention, treatment and situation in Costa Rica. Increased expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in bone marrow of patients with myeloproliferative disorders (MPD).

Angiogenesis is a multistep process of the development of capillaries from established blood vessels. Angiogenesis probably plays a significant role in the development and progression of hematopoietic malignancies. Higher microvascular density and increased serum levels of proangiogenic factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) or basic fibroblasts growth factor (bFGF) have been reported in acute and chronic leukemias, myeloproliferative and myelodysplastic disorders, multiple myeloma and lymphomas. The microvessel density of bone marrow stroma in myeloproliferative disorders i

Evidence for social phobia and other psychiatric disorders in adults who were growth hormone deficient during childhood.

We assessed the psychiatric status of 21 growth hormone deficient (GHD) adults who had been treated with growth hormone (GH) for short stature during childhood. Eight individuals (38%) were found to have undiagnosed social phobia. On a psychometric battery, the scores of GHD subjects with social phobia corresponded closely to those of a matched group of psychiatric patients with social phobia. Because these psychiatric symptoms have deleterious effects on quality of life, social function, and productivity, the physician should be alert to obtain psychiatric assessment of patients with GHD.

Platelet derived growth factor messenger RNA is increased in bone marrow megakaryocytes in patients with myeloproliferative disorders.

Platelet derived growth factor (PDGF) has been suggested to play an important role in the pathogenesis of myelofibrosis, which often occurs in patients with myeloproliferative disorders (MPD). We examined the expression level of PDGF mRNA in bone marrow megakaryocytes from 13 MPD patients by in situ hybridization, using cDNA probes for both human PDGF A chain and B chain (c-sis). The mRNA level for both chains in the patients was significantly higher than that in control patients, and was markedly higher for one patient with essential thrombocythemia and one with polycythemia vera. Early heart failure as a cause of growth and tissue disorders in children with congenital heart disease.

Height, weight, total body fat, lean body mass, size of fat cells and total number of lipid-containing fat cells were compared in two groups of children, ages 2-6 years, with congenital heart disease. Twelve children who developed heart failure in infancy made up one group and 14 asymptomatic patients made up the other. No patient was cyanotic or had undergone surgical repair. Patients with heart failure were shorter and lighter than asymptomatic patients. Whereas both fat and lean tissues were less in the heart failure group, reduction in body fat was more important in producing underweight.

[Trajectories of childhood psychological trauma: Pathways from stressful events - to mental disorders, recovery, or post-traumatic growth].

This review synthesizes current perspectives on outcomes following childhood psychological trauma. When children are exposed to stressful events with similar objective parameters, they may follow distinct developmental trajectories, including resilience, post-traumatic growth, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or more severe personality disorders. Trauma is a dynamic process shaped by interactions among factors at three levels. The analysis addresses initial conditions of trauma exposure, including pre-traumatic factors such as attachment quality, neurobiological and genetic predispositio

Nerve Growth Factor: A Multifaceted Regulator of Pain, Inflammation, and Tissue Remodeling in Bone and Joint Disorders.

As an essential member of the neurotrophic factor family, nerve growth factor (NGF) plays multifaceted regulatory roles in the pathological processes of bone and joint diseases through its dual signaling mechanisms involving high-affinity receptor TrkA and low-affinity receptor p75NTR. This review systematically examines the profound impact of NGF on bone and joint diseases in multiple aspects, such as bone remodeling, pain perception, and angiogenesis. First, NGF promotes mechanical stress-induced bone formation through the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway and regulates osteogenic differentiat

Joyful growth vs. compulsive hedonism: A meta-analysis of brain activation on romantic love and addictive disorders.

Due to the similarities in behavioral characteristics between romantic love and addictive disorders, the concept of being "addicted to someone" transcends mere literary metaphor, expanding perspectives on the study of romantic love and inspiring interventions for addiction. However, there has been a lack of studies systematically exploring the similarities and differences between romantic love and addiction at the neural level. In this study, we conducted an extensive literature search, incorporating 21 studies on romantic love and 28 on addictive disorders, focusing on fMRI research utilizing

The development of growth hormone-releasing hormone analogs: Therapeutic advances in cancer, regenerative medicine, and metabolic disorders.

Growth Hormone-Releasing Hormone (GHRH) and its analogs have gained significant attention for their therapeutic potential across various domains, including oncology, regenerative medicine, and metabolic disorders. Originally recognized for its role in regulating growth hormone (GH) secretion, GHRH has since been discovered to exert broader physiological effects beyond the pituitary gland, with GHRH receptors identified in multiple extrahypothalamic tissues, including tumor cells. This review explores the development of both GHRH agonists and antagonists, focusing on their mechanisms of action,
