Deep learning to assess laryngoscope insertion depth during neonatal intubation with video laryngoscopy.

OBJECTIVE: Video laryngoscopy (VL) improves glottic visualization during neonatal intubation, but real-time guidance on blade insertion depth is lacking. We developed a deep learning model to classify insertion depth during VL as shallow, glottic zone, or deep. STUDY DESIGN: A deep learning model was trained on 298,955 annotated frames from 132 neonatal VL videos from two NICUs on one platform with fivefold cross-validation. 31 clinicians were surveyed regarding preferred device feedback modalities. RESULTS: The model detected glottic zone and shallow insertion depths with F1 scores of 0.894

The efficacy of apneic oxygenation during intubation using a prototype of an oxygenation laryngoscope - a technical simulation.

BACKGROUND: Recently, a non-commercial oxygenation laryngoscope was able to maintain apneic oxygenation during simulated intubation efforts. Since that prototype was 3 mm wider than a standard Macintosh laryngoscope blade, the intubation performance of this device may differ from standard blades. A new prototype of an oxygenation laryngoscope was developed, consisting of a standard-size Macintosh blade and a fixed oxygen supply line to the side. Actually, it is unclear at which point of this blade the oxygen supply line should end to facilitate the best possible oxygen supply for apneic oxygen

[King Vision video laryngoscope for severe post burn contracture neck: an encouraging experience].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Managing the airway of post burn contracture of the neck has always been challenging to anesthesiologists as it limits the alignment of oro-pharyngo-laryngeal axes because of functional and anatomical deformities that occur as a result of long standing contractures. Here the role of the King Vision video laryngoscope which is the latest in the series of video laryngoscope has been evaluated for such patients. CASE REPORT: A 35 year old male patient with post burn contracture of neck was scheduled for release of the contracture. As the patient had had fixed flexion d

Video Laryngoscopic Techniques Associated with Intubation Success in a Helicopter Emergency Medical Service System.

OBJECTIVES: Video laryngoscopy (VL) is a technical adjunct to facilitate endotracheal intubation (ETI). VL also provides objective data for training and quality improvement, allowing evaluation of the technique and airway conditions during ETI. Previous studies of factors associated with ETI success or failure are limited by insufficient nomenclature, individual recall bias and self-report. We tested whether the covariates in prehospital VL recorded data were associated with ETI success. We also measured association between time and clinical variables. METHODS: Retrospective review was conduc

'Flaccid neoglottis' following supracricoid partial laryngectomy: laryngoscopic revision assisted by navigation system.

OBJECTIVE: Supracricoid partial laryngectomy is a reliable laryngeal preservation procedure for tumour stage 2 and selected stage 3 to 4 laryngeal cancers. Of 70 patients thus treated, two (3 per cent) had 'flaccid neoglottis', i.e. redundant mucosa at the inner arytenoid edge which intermittently obstructed the neoglottis. We discuss the mechanism and management of this complication. METHOD: The two cases are presented. A navigation system was used to assist surgery. Neoglottal spatial alteration (specifically cross-sectional area) was assessed pre- and post-operatively using three-dimension
