Large deviations of piecewise-deterministic Markov processes with application to stochastic calcium waves.

We prove a large deviation principle for piecewise deterministic Markov processes (PDMPs). This is an asymptotic estimate for the probability of a trajectory in the large size limit. Explicit Euler-Lagrange equations are determined for computing optimal first-hitting-time trajectories. The results are applied to a model of stochastic calcium dynamics. It is widely conjectured that the mechanism of calcium puff generation is a multiscale process: with microscopic stochastic fluctuations in the opening and closing of individual channels generating cell-wide waves via the diffusion of calcium and

Developmental paths of the associations between visuospatial working memory and numerical processing.

The present study examines the role of spatial abilities in numerical processing in children using an application administered on parents' smartphones. The study comprised four tasks: (1) spatial short-term memory (2) spatial working memory (3) non-symbolic comparison, and (4) symbolic comparison. A total of 541 children performed all four tasks (mean age = 6.41, SD = 4.05), and a conjunction analysis was conducted on the data collected from all four tasks. One of the main goals of the present study was to understand the role of spatial abilities in numerical processing and the modulating effe

Insights into Dengue fever dynamics through advanced mathematical modeling and simulation.

This paper presents an innovative SITR(H)-SEI(M) model designed to analyze and understand the dynamics of dengue fever transmission. The model offers an accurate analysis of disease spread and is applied to recent health data from multiple countries, including Singapore, Costa Rica, Yemen, and India. We investigate the existence, uniqueness, and stability of solutions, and thoroughly examine the basic reproduction number, equilibrium points, and their stability effects. The results show that the disease-free equilibrium is stable when the basic reproduction number is below one, indicating cont

A nonlocal reaction-diffusion system modeling the Schistosomiasis transmission with multiple hosts and periodic delays.

In this paper, we investigate the effects of seasonality, spatial heterogeneity and multiple hosts on the transmission dynamics of schistosomiasis. The seasonal environment imposes a temporary maturation period, parasites' extrinsic incubation phase, and periodic developments within the hosts. This results in multiple periodic time delays in stage transforms. Incorporating both the movements of parasites and their hosts, the transmission becomes periodic, time-delayed, and spatially non-local. We first show the well-posedness of the model and introduce its basic reproduction number R 0 . Acco

Pattern dynamics analysis and application of West Nile virus spatiotemporal models based on higher-order network topology.

The higher-order network structure characterized by hypergraphs or simplicial complexes has become a research hotspot in network space. In this paper, a simplicial complex is used to describe the multivariate interaction between populations, and the reaction diffusion equation in higher-order organization is established. Under certain constraints, the Turing instability condition of the system is derived. Then, the advection mechanism is introduced to construct a reaction-diffusion model with directional migration mechanism, and the pattern dynamics of the reaction-diffusion-advection equation

Modeling the Relationship Between Antibody-Dependent Enhancement and Disease Severity in Secondary Dengue Infection.

Sequential infections with different dengue serotypes (DENV-1, 4) significantly increase the risk of a severe disease outcome (fever, shock, and hemorrhagic disorders). Two hypotheses have been proposed to explain the severity of the disease: (1) antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE) and (2) original T cell antigenic sin. In this work, we explored the first hypothesis through mathematical modeling. The proposed model reproduces the dynamic of susceptible and infected target cells and dengue virus in scenarios of infection-neutralizing and infection-enhancing antibody competition induced by two

Spiracular fluttering increases oxygen uptake.

Many insects show discontinuous respiration with three phases, open, closed, and fluttering, in which the spiracles open and close rapidly. The relative durations of the three phases and the rate of fluttering during the flutter phase vary for individual insects depending on developmental stage and activity, vary between insects of the same species, and vary even more between different species. We studied how the rate of oxygen uptake during the flutter phase depends on the rate of fluttering. Using a mathematical model of oxygen diffusion in the insect tracheal system, we derive a formula for

Unconscious Number Discrimination in the Human Visual System.

How do humans compute approximate number? According to one influential theory, approximate number representations arise in the intraparietal sulcus and are amodal, meaning that they arise independent of any sensory modality. Alternatively, approximate number may be computed initially within sensory systems. Here we tested for sensitivity to approximate number in the visual system using steady state visual evoked potentials. We recorded electroencephalography from humans while they viewed dotclouds presented at 30 Hz, which alternated in numerosity (ranging from 10 to 20 dots) at 15 Hz. At this

The role of structural viscoelasticity in deformable porous media with incompressible constituents: Applications in biomechanics.

The main goal of this work is to clarify and quantify, by means of mathematical analysis, the role of structural viscoelasticity in the biomechanical response of deformable porous media with incompressible constituents to sudden changes in external applied loads. Models of deformable porous media with incompressible constituents are often utilized to describe the behavior of biological tissues, such as cartilages, bones and engineered tissue scaffolds, where viscoelastic properties may change with age, disease or by design. Here, for the first time, we show that the fluid velocity within the m

A mathematical theory of the transcription repression (TR) therapy of cancer - whether and how it may work.

Transcription repression (TR) therapy of cancer has been widely discussed. Here, TR refers to global repression of transcription rather than specific targeting of cancer-causing genes such as MYC. TR drugs inhibit transcription by binding to the transcribed DNA or to RNA polymerase; for example, actinomycin D has been extensively used in research and therapy to shut down transcription globally [1-7]. As proliferating cells demand a high rate of transcription, restricting transcript production could be effective in slowing down cell proliferation. However, TR also deprives other less proliferat

Mathematical modelling of cytokines, MMPs and fibronectin fragments in osteoarthritic cartilage.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease which causes pain and stiffness in joints. OA progresses through excessive degradation of joint cartilage, eventually leading to significant joint degeneration and loss of function. Cytokines, a group of cell signalling proteins, present in raised concentrations in OA joints, can be classified into pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory groups. They mediate cartilage degradation through several mechanisms, primarily the up-regulation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), a group of collagen-degrading enzymes. In this paper we show that the interacti

Impaired math achievement in patients with acute vestibular neuritis.

Broad cognitive difficulties have been reported in patients with peripheral vestibular deficit, especially in the domain of spatial cognition. Processing and manipulating numbers relies on the ability to use the inherent spatial features of numbers. It is thus conceivable that patients with acute peripheral vestibular deficit show impaired numerical cognition. Using the number Stroop task and a short math achievement test, we tested 20 patients with acute vestibular neuritis and 20 healthy, age-matched controls. On the one hand, patients showed normal congruency and distance effects in the num

Transcranial random noise stimulation benefits arithmetic skills.

Although arithmetic skills are crucial cognitive abilities, numeric competence impairments affect a significant portion of the young population. These problems produce a high socio-economic cost by negatively affecting scholastic and work performance. The parietal cortex is the brain area that is classically associated with numeric processing, but it is still debated whether other cortical areas are involved, and only a few studies tried to directly assess the causal link between brain and this cognitive function by using transcranial random noise stimulation, tRNS. This non-invasive electric

The Evolutionary Dynamics of Stochastic Epidemic Model with Nonlinear Incidence Rate.

A stochastic SIRS epidemic model with nonlinear incidence rate and varying population size is formulated to investigate the effect of stochastic environmental variability on inter-pandemic transmission dynamics of influenza A. Sufficient conditions for extinction and persistence of the disease are established. In the case of persistence, the existence of endemic stationary distribution is proved and the distance between stochastic solutions and the endemic equilibrium of the corresponding deterministic system in the time mean sense is estimated. Based on realistic parameters of influenza A in

Analysis of a waterborne disease model with socioeconomic classes.

Waterborne diseases such as cholera continue to pose serious public health problems in the world today. Transmission parameters can vary greatly with socioeconomic class (SEC) and the availability of clean water. We formulate a multi-patch waterborne disease model such that each patch represents a particular SEC with its own water source, allowing individuals to move between SECs. For a 2-SEC model, we investigate the conditions under which each SEC is responsible for driving a cholera outbreak. We determine the effect of SECs on disease transmission dynamics by comparing the basic reproductio

Analysis of an asymmetric two-strain dengue model.

In this paper we analyse a two-strain compartmental dengue fever model that allows us to study the behaviour of a Dengue fever epidemic. Dengue fever is the most common mosquito-borne viral disease of humans that in recent years has become a major international public health concern. The model is an extension of the classical compartmental susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) model where the exchange between the compartments is described by ordinary differential equations (ode). Two-strains of the virus exist so that a primary infection with one strain and secondary infection by the other stra

An investigation on body displacement after two drowning accidents.

The finding of human remains in aquatic environments is usually attributed to causes such as work-related or recreational accidents, suicides, discarded homicide victims, and natural disasters. When the point and date of entry in the water is unknown, these findings pose serious challenges to forensic analysis given the difficulty to estimate the drift of the body. In this context, the information retrieved from cases where the point of entry and body recovery sites are known, as well as the timing, is significant. Two drowning accidents in marine coastal waters were analyzed. In both cases th
