This study evaluates the suitability of commercially available adsorbents for the measurement of gaseous organic mercury species namely monomethylmercury (MMHg) and dimethylmercury (DMHg). Bond Elut ENV (BE), a new generation of divinylbenzene (DVB), is evaluated the first time for simultaneous sampling and quantification of ultra-trace levels of MMHg and DMHg in air and its performance compared against Carbotrap(®) B (CB) and Tenax(®) TA (TA), two commonly used adsorbents for mercury solid phase adsorption. The suitability of TA as an absorbent for MMHg (recovery 100±8.1%) but less so for DMH

The production of the neurotoxic methylmercury in the environment is partly controlled by the bioavailability of inorganic divalent mercury (Hg(II)) to anaerobic bacteria that methylate Hg(II). In sediment porewater, Hg(II) associates with sulfides and natural organic matter to form chemical species that include organic-coated mercury sulfide nanoparticles as reaction intermediates of heterogeneous mineral precipitation. Here, we exposed two strains of sulfate-reducing bacteria to three forms of inorganic mercury: dissolved Hg and sulfide, nanoparticulate HgS, and microparticulate HgS. The bac

Mercury, one of the most toxic elements, exists in various chemical forms each with different toxicities and health implications. Some methylated mercury forms, one of which exists in fish and other seafood products, pose a potential threat, especially during embryonic and early postnatal development. Despite global concerns, little is known about the mechanisms underlying transport and toxicity of different mercury species. To investigate the impact of different mercury chemical forms on vertebrate development, we have successfully combined the zebrafish, a well-established developmental biol

A novel method for determination of methylmercury (MeHg) and phenylmercury (PhHg) by liquid-liquid-liquid microextraction (LLLME) coupled with capillary electrophoresis (CE) with ultraviolet (UV) technique was developed. The method based on MeHg and PhHg was complexed with 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (PAN) to form hydrophobic complexes. When the sample solution was stirred, analytes were extracted into the organic layer (200 microL toluene) and back-extracted simultaneously into the 4.0 microL 0.1% (w/v) l-cysteine microdrop. The factors affecting on the LLLME of two mercury species, including

For determination of methylmercury (MeHg) and ethylmercury (EtHg) in seawater and industrial wastewater, a simple and robust analytical method was developed based on phenylation and solvent extraction followed by GC-MS measurement. Alkylmercury compounds were directly phenylated with sodium tetraphenylborate in water and extracted into toluene. The method detection limits obtained for MeHg and EtHg in pure water were 53.3 and 33.5 ng Hg L-1, respectively, which are almost 10 times lower than the environmental quality standards for water pollution in Japan (EQSJ): 0.5 μg Hg L-1. The recoveries

Methylmercury is a global pollutant and potent neurotoxin whose abundance in the food chain mandates additional studies on the consequences and mechanisms of its toxicity to the central nervous system. Formulation of our new hypotheses was predicated on our appreciation for (a) the remarkable affinity of mercurials for the anionic form of sulfhydryl (-SH) groups, and (b) the essential role of thiols in protein biochemistry. The present chapter addresses pathways to human exposure of various mercury compounds, highlighting their neurotoxicity and potential involvement in neurotoxic injury and n

Mercury (Hg), specifically as methyl Hg (MeHg), is a potent neurotoxin with significant consequences for humans and wildlife. This study examines the interactions between sulfur used as a fungicide in California, U.S., vineyards and Hg methylation. We collected surface soils and soil porewater across a vineyard to wetland gradient situated at the terminus of the Napa Valley winegrowing region for analyses of sulfate, total Hg, and MeHg. We found that sulfate runoff from vineyards is transported into adjacent wetlands via drainage ditches and a grassland transition zone. In addition, concentrat

BACKGROUND: Certified reference materials (CRMs) for mercury speciation of biological fluids have hitherto been limited to frozen or cold-storage types, which impedes the participation of laboratories in tropical or remote regions. Existing CRMs often do not fully meet user needs, particularly regarding storage stability and concentration relevance.
RESULTS: Using pooled Japanese human blood, we developed a freeze-dried, ambient-stable blood CRM, with certified values of 6.16 μg L-1 for total mercury (THg) and 5.46 μg L-1 for methylmercury (MeHg, as Hg). These concentrations are congruent wit

Seafood consumption is a major pathway for exposure to methylmercury (MeHg), a globally pervasive neurotoxin. Yet, how upstream processes in the seafood value chain influence MeHg exposure remains poorly understood. Here we quantified MeHg in seafood production, trade and consumption in 2019 around the world. We found that countries with seafood-MeHg exposures beyond the recommended threshold by the World Health Organization were predominately high-income countries. These countries experienced a tenfold increase in exposure levels compared with low-income countries, due to greater consumption

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a widespread environmental pollutant known to cause DNA and chromosomal damage, in part through reactive oxygen species (ROS). Telomeres, essential for chromosomal protection, are highly sensitive to oxidative damage and consequent shortening. While ROS-dependent oxidative stress accelerates telomere attrition in vitro, the mechanisms by which chronic exposure to ROS-inducing exogenous agents affects telomere length in vivo remain unclear. We studied effects of sublethal, multi-generational MeHg exposure on telomere dynamics during early life in zebra finches (Taeniopyg

The contamination of micro-plastics (MPs)/nano-plastics (NPs) in environment poses a global concern, necessitating a scientific evaluation of their potential risks to ecosystems and organisms. We herein investigated the adsorption kinetics of different mercury species including inorganic mercury (Hg2+), methylmercury (MeHg) and ethylmercury (EtHg) on three different MPs, such as polyethylene MPs (PE MPs), polypropylene MPs (PP MPs) and polystyrene MPs (PS MPs) in micro-polluted water in detail, and further evaluated the individual and combined cytotoxicity of polystyrene NPs (PS NPs)/polypropy

Methylmercury (MeHg) accumulation in rice grains and greenhouse gas emissions are significant environmental concerns in rice paddy ecosystems. Dynamic of MeHg in paddy soils are likely interacted with the emissions of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), given the involvement of methanogenesis and organic matter mineralization in mercury (Hg) methylation, but poorly defined at present. Here, rice-growing pot experiments were performed with varying levels of paddy soil Hg to examine the interactions among CO2 and CH4 emissions and MeHg dynamics under variable Hg amendment scenarios. Mercury

Mercury is a toxic metal with global consequences for environmental and human health. Global South is home to 3 of the world's 5 largest mercury emitters; besides high emission, such countries are the most affected, especially in regions such as Amazon. Based on the Amazonian context, this review discusses characteristics (such as anthropogenic sources and the presence of traditional populations) and compiles initiatives and proposals of realistic strategies to prevent/mitigate methylmercury exposure and intoxication including recommendations for case reports, initiatives to improve human biom

Algae play a significant role in regulating the biogeochemical cycle of mercury (Hg), particularly its highly toxic form, methylmercury (MeHg), within wetlands and lakes. However, despite their widespread presence in paddy fields, their specific effects on MeHg dynamics are not yet fully understood. This study investigated the algae-mediated distribution and accumulation of MeHg in Hg-contaminated paddy fields, utilizing field investigation and microcosm experiment. The results indicated that algae demonstrated a multi-source uptake pattern and had a high capacity to accumulate both total Hg (

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a potent neurotoxin that bioaccumulates along food chains. The conversion of MeHg from mercury (Hg) is mediated by a variety of anaerobic microorganisms carrying hgcAB genes. Mangrove sediments are potential hotspots of microbial Hg methylation; however, the microorganisms responsible for Hg methylation are poorly understood. Here, we conducted metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses to investigate the diversity and distribution of putative microbial Hg-methylators in mangrove ecosystems. The highest hgcA abundance and expression occurred in surface sediments in She

Mushrooms may incorporate significant levels of Hg making its consumption harmful to human health. Mercury remediation induced by Se competition in edible mushrooms represents a valuable alternative since Se plays effective roles against Hg uptake, accumulation, and toxicity. In this way, Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotus djamor were cultivated on Hg-contaminated substrate simultaneously supplemented with Se(IV) or Se(VI) under different dosages in this study. The protective role of Se was assessed taking into account morphological characteristics and Hg and Se total concentrations determined

Mercury (Hg) pollution in paddy soil has gained special attention because methylmercury (MeHg) can accumulate in rice grains. Therefore, there is an urgent need to explore the remediation materials of mercury-polluted paddy soil. In this study, herbaceous peat (HP), peat moss (PM), and thiol-modified HP/PM (MHP/MPM) were selected to investigate the effects and probable mechanism of their application on Hg (im)mobilization in mercury-polluted paddy soil through pot experiments. The results showed that HP, PM, MHP and MPM addition increased MeHg concentrations in the soil, indicating that the ad

Methylmercury (MeHg) speciation in urine requires a robust, reproducible and sensitive technique that enables reliable measurements in limited sample volumes. Conventional MeHg extraction by acid digestion allows for processing of only small amounts of urine digest, making accurate MeHg determination in low-concentration samples virtually impossible. Distillation has been proven as an efficient isolation method with very low detection limits for measuring MeHg in water samples; therefore, in this study, it was optimised for urine samples. Combined with aqueous phase ethylation, purging with ni

Field and sensitive analysis of mercury species in seafood is helpful to assess the risk of human exposure to mercury, but the cumbersome pretreatment process is time-consuming and laborious. Herein, a simple one-pot pretreatment system is designed for extraction, separation, and enrichment of inorganic mercury (Hg(II)) and methylmercury (MeHg) in fish, and coupled to dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) microplasma optical emission spectrometry (OES). Both Hg(II) and MeHg species in fish can be effectively extracted by tetramethylammonium hydroxide under ultrasound, then separated from the fish

Estuaries are an important food source for the world's growing population, yet human health is at risk from elevated exposure to methylmercury (MeHg) via the consumption of estuarine fish. Moreover, the sources and cycling of MeHg in temperate estuarine ecosystems are poorly understood. Here, we investigated the seasonal and tidal patterns of mercury (Hg) forms in Long Island Sound (LIS), in a location where North Atlantic Ocean waters mix with the Connecticut River. We found that seasonal variations in Hg and MeHg in LIS followed the extent of riverine Hg delivery, while tides further exacerb
