Optimal astigmatism to enhance depth of focus after cataract surgery.

A small amount of myopic astigmatism can enhance the depth of focus of the pseudophakic eye, optimally providing at least 20/30 visual acuity for both near and distance fixation. For given spherocylindrical refractive errors and fixation distances, the cross-sectional area of Sturm's conoid at the retina was calculated for a schematic eye. These data were used to determine the optimal astigmatic error needed to obtain maximum depth of focus and least theoretical blur for any given spherical equivalent refractive error. Optimal depth of focus was obtained when the plus cylindrical component equ

Risk Factors for Corneal Monochromatic Aberrations and Implications for Multifocal and Extended Depth-of-Focus Intraocular Lens Implantation.

PURPOSE: To discuss factors influencing corneal aberrations that might influence the optical quality after intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. METHODS: PubMed and Scopus were the main resources used to search the medical literature. An extensive search was performed to identify relevant articles concerning factors influencing the level of corneal aberrations as of August 27, 2023. The following keywords were used in various combinations: corneal, aberrations, defocus, astigmatism, spherical aberration, coma, trefoil, quadrafoil, intraocular lens, and IOL. RESULTS: Conclusive evidence is lac

Comparing surgically induced astigmatism calculated by means of simulated keratometry versus total corneal refractive power.

PURPOSE: To evaluate surgically induced astigmatism as computed by means of either simulated keratometry (KSIM) or total corneal refractive power (TCRP) after temporal incisions. METHODS: Prospective observational study including 36 right eyes undergoing cataract surgery. Astigmatism was measured preoperatively during the 3-month follow-up period using Pentacam. Surgically induced astigmatism was computed considering anterior corneal surface astigmatism at 3 mm with KSIM and considering both corneal surfaces with TCRP from 1 to 8 mm (TCRP3 for 3 mm). The eyes under study were divided into two

Evaluation of Toric Intraocular Lenses in Patients With Low Degrees of Astigmatism.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to describe the efficacy of toric intraocular lenses (IOLs) in patients with low degrees of corneal astigmatism. DESIGN: Retrospective case series was undertaken. METHODS: Patients with low amounts of corneal astigmatism who were treated with either a toric monofocal lens (SN6AT2 Toric, n = 76) or a toric multifocal lens (SND1T2 +3.00, n = 44) were reviewed. Eyes were evaluated preoperatively and 3 months postoperatively. Refraction and visual outcomes were monitored. RESULTS: Patients (69.7%) in the monofocal toric group obtained refractive cylinder less than 0.25

Exploring patient preferences for intraocular lenses selection in age-related cataract: a discrete choice experiment study.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigates the preferences of cataract patients in East China regarding intraocular lenses (IOLs). METHODS: A Discrete Choice Experiment (DCE) was conducted using a questionnaire that included various IOLs attributes. Participants made choices based on different combinations of these attributes, and the data were analyzed using multinomial logit models (MNL) and latent class analysis (LCA) to identify preference heterogeneity. RESULTS: A total of 200 cataract patients (mean age 66.2 years, 58.5% female) participated in the study. The most influential factors in IOL

Exploring the optimum step size for defocus curves.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of reducing the number of visual acuity measurements made in a defocus curve on the quality of data quantified. SETTING: Midland Eye, Solihull, United Kingdom. DESIGN: Evaluation of a technique. METHODS: Defocus curves were constructed by measuring visual acuity on a distance logMAR letter chart, randomizing the test letters between lens presentations. The lens powers evaluated ranged between +1.50 diopters (D) and -5.00 D in 0.50 D steps, which were also presented in a randomized order. Defocus curves were measured binocularly with the Tecnis diffractive, Re

Visual outcomes, spectacle independence, and patient satisfaction of pseudophakic mini-monovision using a new monofocal intraocular lens.

Modified monovision-or "mini-monovision"-is an alternative method to multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) for treating presbyopia. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes of patients bilaterally implanted with the new enhanced monofocal Tecnis Eyhance (ICB00) IOLs with the mini-monovision technique to improve near vision. In this retrospective case series, the medical records of 50 patients (100 eyes) who underwent bilateral cataract surgery were reviewed. Patients were divided into the Emmetropia and Mini-monovision groups based on the postoperative spherical equivalent and residua

PURPOSE: To manage patient dissatisfaction following multifocal intraocular lens (MF-IOL) implantation by IOL exchange with either a monofocal or an alternative MF-IOL, and to compare outcomes in these two groups. METHODS: MF-IOL exchange was performed in 32 patients (64 eyes) with neuroadaptation failure. The MF-to-MF group involved patients who had a MF-IOL exchanged with another MF-IOL of a different optical profile and the MF-to-MO group involved patients who had a MF-IOL exchanged to a monofocal IOL. Visual outcomes and complications were analysed. The Quality of Vision (QoV) questionnai

The role of presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses after laser in situ keratomileusis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: There is a growing number of patients who wish to remain spectacle independent after cataract surgery, and this number includes some of the millions of people worldwide who have undergone laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). This article reviews the evidence of the use of presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses (IOLs) in patients who have previously undergone LASIK. RECENT FINDINGS: Small studies have demonstrated that the use of hybrid refractive-diffractive multifocal IOLs in eyes with previous myopic or hyperopic LASIK can result in good refractive results. However, re
