Diagnosis and classification of optic neuritis.

There is no consensus regarding the classification of optic neuritis, and precise diagnostic criteria are not available. This reality means that the diagnosis of disorders that have optic neuritis as the first manifestation can be challenging. Accurate diagnosis of optic neuritis at presentation can facilitate the timely treatment of individuals with multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder, or myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease. Epidemiological data show that, cumulatively, optic neuritis is most frequently caused by many conditions other than mu

[OPTIC NEURITIS - CLASSIFICATION, MANAGEMENT AND TREATMENT].

Optic neuritis is an inflammatory condition of the optic nerve, frequently the first manifestation of a central nervous system disease. While typical optic neuritis is strongly associated with multiple sclerosis, the etiology of atypical optic neuritis varies. The visual and the systemic prognosis, as well as the management depend on the suspected etiology. The understanding and the classification of atypical optic neuritis evolved significantly since the discovery of the anti-aquaporin4 (AQP4) and the anti-myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) antibodies as biomarkers and pathologic cause

Lateralization bias for autoimmune optic neuritis.

The asymmetrical structure of the human brain is reflected not only by innate interhemispheric differences but also by lateralization in neurological disease. We tested if unilateral autoimmune optic neuritis (aON) manifests more frequently on the left than the right eye in clinical and neuroimaging terms and whether Google searches for aON symptoms reflect this bias, too. We employed a retrospective analysis of a patient cohort from 2009 to 2019 with 552 unilateral aONs and 374 corresponding MRI imaging data sets. Searchmetrics Suite keywords tool was applied for the analysis of Google search

Optic neuritis following anti-rabies vaccine.

Neurological complications related to anti-rabies vaccine are uncommon. The involvement of the optic nerve is extremely rare. It has been occasionally reported after Semple's vaccine administration due to the presence of highly antigenic sheep brain tissue in the vaccine. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of optic neuritis after chick embryo-derived anti-rabies vaccine.

Pediatric Optic Neuritis: What Is New.

Few diseases blur the margins between their childhood and adult-onset varieties as much as optic neuritis. This report will review our state of knowledge of pediatric optic neuritis, as well as its relationship to the latest consensus definitions of neuroinflammatory disease. Current diagnostic and treatment options will be explored, as well as our potential to uncover an understanding of pediatric optic neuritis through systematic prospective studies. The risk of evolving multiple sclerosis is probably less than in adults, but pediatric optic neuritis is more likely to be an initial manifesta

Cortical functional modifications following optic neuritis.

BACKGROUND: We have recently suggested that delayed visual evoked potential (VEP) latencies in the fellow eye (FE) of optic neuritis patients reflect a cortical adaptive process, to compensate for the delayed arrival of visual information via the affected eye (AE). OBJECTIVE: To define the cortical mechanism that underlies this adaptive process. METHODS: Cortical activations to moving stimuli and connectivity patterns within the visual network were tested using functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 11 recovered optic neuritis patients and in 11 matched controls. RESULTS: Reduced co

Ultrasonic Elastography Evaluation in Optic Neuritis.

PURPOSE: In the present study, we attempted to determine whether ultrasonic elastography (USE) evaluation can be used in a diagnosis of optic neuritis (ON). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirteen patients who each had one normal eye and one eye with a diagnosis of ON were included in the study. Ultrasonography (US) and USE examinations were performed on the affected and non-affected eyes of all participants. Optic nerve and adjacent fat tissue regions at the same depth were selected, and USE measurements were obtained. The optic nerve diameter was measured in both normal and affected eyes. RESULTS:

Optic neuritis secondary to antiandrogen therapy.

BACKGROUND: Optic neuropathy is a disorder characterised by dysfunction or destruction of the optic nerve tissues. Acquired causes include interruption in the blood supply, nutritional deficiency, compression by a tumour or aneurysm, trauma, and toxic types (Ambizas and Patel In US Pharm 36(4):HS2-HS6, 1). Drug-induced optic neuropathy is of the toxic type and can be defined as a clinical syndrome characterised by papillomacular bundle damage, central, or cecocentral scotoma, and reduced colour vision (Ambizas and Patel In US Pharm 36(4):HS2-HS6, 2011; Sharma and Sharma In Indian J Ophthalmol

Optic neuritis revealing Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease.

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease is a rare systemic disease with uncommon neurological involvement. We report the case of a 30-year-old Asian woman who presented a rapidly progressive loss of vision. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the optic nerve revealed an inflammation of the left optic nerve with chiasmatic involvement, without any encephalic or medullar lesion. Thoracic computed tomography scan showed bilateral axillary lymphadenopathy. Analysis of a biopsy of the axillary lymph node showed typical histological findings of Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease. There was no clinical or biological sign of

Treatment options for atypical optic neuritis.

CONTEXT: Optic neuritis (ON) is defined as inflammation of the optic nerve and can have various etiologies. The most common presentation in the US is demyelinating, or "typical" ON, usually associated with multiple sclerosis. This is in contrast to "atypical" causes of ON, which differ in their clinical presentation, management, and prognosis. These atypical cases are characterized by lack of eye pain, exudates, and hemorrhages on exam, very severe, bilateral or progressive visual loss, or with failure to recover vision. AIMS: The aim was to describe the clinical presentations of atypical ON

[Differential diagnosis of optic neuritis (review].

Clinical presentations, diagnosis and differential diagnosis of optic neuritis of different etiology are reviewed. This symptom is concomitant with the development of multiple sclerosis in about 30% cases and accompanies the disease in 75% patients. Acute or subacute lesion of the optic nerve can be a symptom of optic myelitis, Leber's disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, Susac's syndrome, idiopathic retinal vasculitis, sarcoidosis and some other diseases. Clinical features and course of optic neuritis in these diseases are discussed.
