Change perception and change interference within and across feature dimensions.

The ability to perceive a change in a visual object is reduced when that change is presented in competition with other changes which are task-irrelevant. We performed two experiments which investigate the basis of this change interference effect. We tested whether change interference occurs as a consequence of some form of attentional capture, or whether the interference occurs at a stage prior to attentional selection of the task-relevant change. A modified probe-detection task was used to explore this issue. Observers were required to report the presence/absence of a specified change-type (c

The effects of the binocular disparity differences between targets and maskers on visual search.

A visual search for targets is facilitated when the target objects are on a different depth plane than other masking objects cluttering the scene. The ability of observers to determine whether one of four letters presented stereoscopically at four symmetrically located positions on the fixation plane differed from the other three was assessed when the target letters were masked by other randomly positioned and oriented letters appearing on the same depth plane as the target letters, or in front, or behind it. Three additional control maskers, derived from the letter maskers, were also presente

Failure to detect meaning in RSVP at 27 ms per picture.

The human visual system has the remarkable ability to rapidly detect meaning from visual stimuli. Potter, Wyble, Hagmann, and McCourt (Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics, 76, 270-279, 2014) tested the minimum viewing time required to obtain meaning from a stream of pictures shown in a rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) sequence containing either six or 12 pictures. They reported that observers could detect the presence of a target picture specified by name (e.g., smiling couple) even when the pictures in the sequence were presented for just 13 ms each. Potter et al. claimed that this

Discriminating between first- and second-order cognition in first-episode paranoid schizophrenia.

INTRODUCTION: An impairment of visually perceiving backward masked stimuli is commonly observed in patients with schizophrenia, yet it is unclear whether this impairment is the result of a deficiency in first or higher order processing and for which subtypes of schizophrenia it is present. METHODS: Here, we compare identification (first order) and metacognitive (higher order) performance in a visual masking paradigm between a highly homogenous group of young first-episode patients diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia (N = 11) to that of carefully matched healthy controls (N = 13). RESULTS:

The dynamics of visual pattern masking in natural scene processing: a magnetoencephalography study.

We investigated the dynamics of natural scene processing and mechanisms of pattern masking in a scene-recognition task. Psychophysical recognition performance and the magnetoencephalogram (MEG) were recorded simultaneously. Photographs of natural scenes were briefly displayed and in the masked condition immediately followed by a pattern mask. Viewing the scenes without masking elicited a transient occipital activation that started approximately 70 ms after the pattern onset, peaked at 110 ms, and ended after 170 ms. When a mask followed the target an additional transient could be reliably iden

Effects of peripheral nonlinearity on psychometric functions for forward-masked tones.

Psychometric functions (PFs) for forward-masked tones were obtained for conditions in which signal level was varied to estimate threshold at several masker levels (variable-signal condition), and in which masker level was varied to estimate threshold at several signal levels (variable-masker condition). The changes in PF slope across combinations of masker frequency, masker level, and signal delay were explored in three experiments. In experiment 1, a 2-kHz, 10-ms tone was masked by a 50, 70 or 90 dB SPL, 20-ms on-frequency forward masker, with signal delays of 2, 20, or 40 ms, in a variable-s

The influence of color on transient system activity: implications for dyslexia research.

Metacontrast and apparent motion experiments designed to utilize transient system resources were adopted to investigate the proposal that transient system activity is differentially influenced by different colored stimuli. The results generally showed no effect of color on transient system activity in either adults or children. However, the predicted pattern of results was demonstrated when contrast rather than color was manipulated in a final metacontrast experiment. We discuss the tenuousness of the proposal that color differentially influences transient activity, exploring its physiological

Chronic conductive hearing loss in adults: effects on the auditory brainstem response and masking-level difference.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether chronic conductive hearing loss in adults results in changes in the auditory brainstem response (ABR) similar to those observed in children with histories of otitis media with effusion. DESIGN: Test of effect of unilateral conductive hearing loss on adult ABR using age-matched control group and subjects as their own controls. SUBJECTS: Twelve adults with a history of unilateral conductive ear disease. An age-matched control group of 21 adults was also tested. METHODS: The ABR, an electrophysiologic test of auditory brainstem functioning, was used to evaluate

Auditory performance and acoustic reflexes in young adults reporting listening difficulties.

We aimed to determine whether reported difficulties in speech understanding are associated with abnormal acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs). The acoustic reflex has been shown to have a role in the understanding of speech at high intensities by ensuring that the strong low-frequency components of sound do not excessively mask the higher-frequency components, which are important for speech understanding. There is also wide variance in individual ARTs. Hence, the possibility arises that subjects reporting listening difficulties in noise have abnormal acoustic reflex function. In this investigatio

Detection of temporal gaps in sinusoids by elderly subjects with and without hearing loss.

Thresholds for the detection of temporal gaps in sinusoidal signals were measured as a function of frequency (100-2000 Hz) and level in 15 elderly hearing-impaired subjects and 11 elderly subjects with near-normal hearing at frequencies below 2000 Hz. The sinusoids were presented in a background noise intended to mask spectral splatter associated with the gap. In a separate experiment, auditory filter shapes and detection efficiency were estimated for the same subjects using the notched-noise method, at center frequencies of 100, 200, 400, and 800 Hz. The gap thresholds at higher signal levels

Speech perception and the discrimination of brief auditory cues in reading disabled children.

The processing of speech and nonspeech sounds by 23 reading disabled children and their age- and sex-matched controls was examined in a task requiring them to identify and report the order of pairs of stimuli. Reading disabled children were impaired in making judgments with very brief tones and with stop consonant syllables at short interstimulus intervals (ISI's). They had no unusual difficulty with vowel stimuli, vowel stimuli in a white noise background, or very brief visual figures. Poor performance on the tones and stop consonants appears to be due to specific difficulty in processing ver

Collapse of the ear canal during masking for bone conduction.

Although it is well recognized that collapse of the external meatus can mimic a conductive hearing loss in the test ear, attention must also be directed to the masked ear during masked bone conduction threshold testing. Failure to recognize collapse of the masked ear may result in a false air-bone gap in the test ear. Two such cases are presented and the mechanism analyzed. Suggestions as to identification and resolution of this problem are discussed.

Noise masking of tone responses and critical ratios in single units of the mouse cochlear nerve and cochlear nucleus.

Responses of single units in the cochlear nerve and cochlear nucleus to tone bursts in a background of continuous white broadband noise were recorded. Tone and noise intensities ranged from threshold to saturation levels. Masking of the tone response by the noise was demonstrated by comparing peristimulus-time histograms and spike rates recorded during the tone and between tone presentations. The response of a unit to masking was found to be predictable based upon the difference in its rate of response to the tone and to the noise when the tone was masked. Several nonlinearities of the masking

Cochlear initiation sites of the frequency following potential.

This study used a series of non-simultaneous masking stimuli set at subjects' pulsation threshold (PT) level to deduce frequency following potential (FFP) tuning curves for 500-Hz tone bursts at 80 and 100 dB SPL. PT and FFP tuning curves were determined in the presence and absence of continuous high-pass masking noise. Results from study demonstrated differences in FFP tuning curves, depending on the high-pass masking condition. High-frequency end of FFP tuning curve was diminished in the presence of high-pass masking noise. These findings suggested that higher frequency tone bursts were less

Initial stages of visual information processing in dyslexia.

Four experimental tasks were employed to explore the initial stages of visual information processing in a group of dyslexic boys and in a group of normal control subjects ranging in age from 8 to 14 years. Two tasks involved visual backward masking; the other two were temporal integration tasks. The backward-masking tasks yielded evidence of slower rates of visual information processing in dyslexic children; the temporal-integration tasks yielded evidence of longer duration of visible persistence in dyslexic children. This effect was most evident in situations in which sequential stimuli impin

On the relationship of stapedial contraction to central masking.

The auditory masked threshold of a 1-kc/s pure tone was determined in quiet and with levels of white noise at 50-80 db SL in the non-test ear. Two groups of normal-hearing adults were tested, one (N:14, mn age = 27.4 yrs) with no history of middle-ear pathology, and another (N:12, mn age = 44.7 yrs) with the stapedial tendon severed. Significant differences in the amount of masked-threshold shift were observed, greater shifts being seen for the normal Ss, additional shifts ranging from 0.8-4.3 db as masking increased from 50-80 db SL. These differences were judged to be at least partly the res

Effects of continuous noise on avian hearing and vocal development.

Continuous loud noice was used to mask auditory feedback from vocal behavior of male canaries. Single unit techniques demonstrate partial deafness after noise exposure. Longer exposure caused greater deficits, with losses of high-frequency sensitivity. Males raised in noise to 40 days of age, then deafened surgically, thus totally deprived of auditory feedback from vocalization, developed significantly fewer song syllables than birds similarly raised but left intact, to mature in quiet sound-insulated chambers. Males left longer in noise, to sexual maturity at 200 days of age, sang at first li

Face perception in children with autism and Asperger's syndrome.

Children with diagnoses of either autism or Asperger's syndrome were matched on measures of verbal mental age with nonautistic control children. They were tested on their abilities to process both facial and nonfacial stimuli. There were no significant differences between the low ability autistic and control groups, but the high ability autistic and Asperger's children performed significantly worse than controls across all tests. Group averages masked substantial individual variation. The results are seen as indicating a general perceptual deficit that is not specific to faces or emotions. Thi

Discovering Emotion in a Cocktail Party: How Emotional Learning Shapes Neural Dynamics in Speech-on-Speech Masking.

PURPOSE: Under a noisy environment such as a cocktail party, emotional signals play a crucial role in helping listeners unmask target speech. However, it remains unclear how emotional features carried in a speaker's vocal timbre shape neural processing over time. This study aimed to characterize the temporal neural dynamics of learned emotion with a speaker's voice in complex listening conditions. METHOD: We employed an emotional learning paradigm in a speech-on-speech context, pairing two different target speakers with either angry or neutral facial expressions. Electroencephalogram data wer
