Artifact reduction strategies for prosthetic heart valve CT imaging.

Multislice CT evaluation of prosthetic heart valves (PHV) is limited by PHV-related artifacts. We assessed the influence of different kV settings, a metal artifact reduction filter (MARF) and an iterative reconstruction algorithm (IR) on PHV-induced artifacts in an in vitro model. A Medtronic-Hall tilting disc and St Jude bileafet PHV were imaged using a 64-slice scanner with 100 kV/165 mAs, 120 kV/100 mAs, 140 kV/67 mAs at an equal CTDI(vol). Images were reconstructed with (1) filtered back projection (FBP), (2) IR, (3) MARF and (4) MARF and IR. Hypo- and hyperdense artifacts volumes (mean mm

Noninvasive quantification of heterogeneous lung growth following extensive lung resection by high-resolution computed tomography.

To quantify the in vivo magnitude and distribution of regional compensatory lung growth following extensive lung resection, we performed high-resolution computed tomography at 15- and 30-cmH(2)O transpulmonary pressures and measured air and tissue (including microvascular blood) volumes within and among lobes in six adult male foxhounds, before and after balanced 65% lung resection ( approximately 32% removed from each side). Each lobe was identified from lobar fissures. Intralobar gradients in air and tissue volumes were expressed along standardized x,y,z-coordinate axes. Fractional tissue vo

Flexible state space modelling for accurate and efficient 3D lung nodule detection.

Early and accurate detection of pulmonary nodules in computed tomography (CT) scans is critical for reducing lung cancer mortality. While convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and Transformer-based architectures have been widely used for this task, they often suffer from insufficient global context awareness, quadratic complexity, and dependence on post-processing steps such as non-maximum suppression (NMS). This study aims to develop a novel 3D lung nodule detection framework that balances local and global contextual awareness with low computational complexity, while minimizing reliance on man

A comparison of limited-angle CBCT photon-counting and flat-panel digital mammography in perceived detection and visualization of breast lesions.

This investigation aimed to compare perceived lesion detectability and visibility between limited-angle cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) photon-counting (PC) and flat-panel (FP) mammography at equivalent radiation-dose levels. Projection data were collected by rotating a lesion-containing, humanlike breast phantom and acquiring images at every other degree using both a PC and an FP system, resulting in 5-13 projections over an 8-24° angular range. Feldkamp-Davis-Kress (FDK) and simultaneous iterative reconstruction technique (SIRT) algorithms were used to reconstruct three-dimensional (3D)

Automated patient-derived noise power spectrum estimation in abdominal CT: a preliminary validation.

Background.Established methods are available for measuring the noise power spectrum (NPS) in computed tomography (CT) by using uniform phantoms. However, in clinical practice, direct estimation of this metric from patient images is desirable for continuous image quality monitoring and protocol optimization.Methodology.An automated workflow was developed through the integration of liver segmentation with TotalSegmentator, optimized selection of square patches in potentially homogeneous regions using a greedy algorithm, and NPS computation employing the PyLinac library. Efficient Descriptor-Based Segmentation of Parotid Glands With Nonlocal Means.

OBJECTIVE: We introduce descriptor-based segmentation that extends existing patch-based methods by combining intensities, features, and location information. Since it is unclear which image features are best suited for patch selection, we perform a broad empirical study on a multitude of different features. METHODS: We extend nonlocal means segmentation by including image features and location information. We search larger windows with an efficient nearest neighbor search based on kd-trees. We compare a large number of image features. RESULTS: The best results were obtained for entropy image

Evaluation of scatter effects on image quality for breast tomosynthesis.

Digital breast tomosynthesis uses a limited number (typically 10-20) of low-dose x-ray projections to produce a pseudo-three-dimensional volume tomographic reconstruction of the breast. The purpose of this investigation was to characterize and evaluate the effect of scattered radiation on the image quality for breast tomosynthesis. In a simulation, scatter point spread functions generated by a Monte Carlo simulation method were convolved over the breast projection to estimate the distribution of scatter for each angle of tomosynthesis projection. The results demonstrate that in the absence of

3D CT cinematic rendering of the spleen: Potential role in problem solving.

Cinematic rendering (CR) is a new 3D visualization methodology for volumetric diagnostic imaging including computed tomography (CT) datasets composed of isotropic voxels. CR produces photorealistic images with enhanced detail relative to other 3D visualization methods and realistic shadowing. In this review, we provide a number of examples of splenic pathology visualized with CR including conditions affecting the splenic vasculature, neoplasms, and accessory spleens. These examples are compared to 2D CT and traditional 3D CT techniques and the potential advantages of CR are highlighted. CR dis

Complex lung motion estimation via adaptive bilateral filtering of the deformation field.

Estimation of physiologically plausible deformations is critical for several medical applications. For example, lung cancer diagnosis and treatment requires accurate image registration which preserves sliding motion in the pleural cavity, and the rigidity of chest bones. This paper addresses these challenges by introducing a novel approach for regularisation of non-linear transformations derived from a bilateral filter. For this purpose, the classic Gaussian kernel is replaced by a new kernel that smoothes the estimated deformation field with respect to the spatial position, intensity and defo

A new formula for rapid assessment of pericardial effusion volume by computed tomography.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate a new formula for the rapid assessment of pericardial effusion (PE) volume by computed tomography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty computed tomographic scans positive for PE were reviewed by two observers. Diameters of PE were measured at four locations. Additionally, PE volume was assessed by volumetry. The correlation between PE diameters and volume was evaluated, and a linear equation was derived for each diameter location. To test validity and reliability of the measurements, intraclass correlation and Bland-Altman analysis wer

A Dual-Task Synergy-Driven Generalization Framework for Pancreatic Cancer Segmentation in CT Scans.

Pancreatic cancer, characterized by its notable prevalence and mortality rates, demands accurate lesion delineation for effective diagnosis and therapeutic interventions. The generalizability of extant methods is frequently compromised due to the pronounced variability in imaging and the heterogeneous characteristics of pancreatic lesions, which may mimic normal tissues and exhibit significant inter-patient variability. Thus, we propose a generalization framework that synergizes pixel-level classification and regression tasks, to accurately delineate lesions and improve model stability. This f

Improvement of diagnostic performance of hyperacute ischemic stroke in head CT using an image-based noise reduction technique with non-black-boxed process.

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate whether an image-based noise reduction (INR) technique with a conventional rule-based algorithm involving no black-boxed processes can outperform an existing hybrid-type iterative reconstruction (HIR) technique, when applied to brain CT images for diagnosis of early CT signs, which generally exhibit low-contrast lesions that are difficult to detect. METHODS: The subjects comprised 27 patients having infarctions within 4.5 h of onset and 27 patients with no change in brain parenchyma. Images with thicknesses of 5 mm and 0.625 mm were reconstructed by HIR
