Metabolic multimorbidity and liver fibrosis among people with hepatitis B in Senegal.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is the leading cause of liver fibrosis in West Africa. Metabolic comorbidities may accelerate liver disease among people with HBV (pwHBV). We evaluated the association between metabolic multimorbidity and liver fibrosis in pwHBV in Senegal. DESIGN OR METHODS: We included hepatitis B surface antigen-positive adults with a negative HIV test between 2019 and 2022. Metabolic multimorbidity was defined as the presence of at least two comorbidities, including obesity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidemia. Significant liver fibrosis …

The One Health national policy network to combat antimicrobial resistance in Senegal.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a health threat globally and particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Senegal, like many other African countries, faces significant challenges in addressing the AMR crisis. This article aims to investigate the policy-making process that supports efforts to combat AMR in Senegal since the adoption of the country's 2017 National Multisectoral Action Plan Against Antimicrobial Resistance. A survey was conducted between January and August 2023 with key organizations involved in the policy-making process related to AMR at the national level. We collected b…

Mosquito-based detection of retroviruses and arboviruses in Senegal: expanding the scope of xenosurveillance.

BACKGROUND: Mosquitoes are well-known vectors for arthropod-borne viruses, yet their role as passive carriers of non-arthropod-borne viruses remains underexplored. Xenosurveillance, a method that utilizes blood-feeding arthropods to sample host and pathogen genetic material, has emerged as a valuable tool in viral ecology. In this study, we investigated the viral landscape of blood-fed mosquitoes from Senegal and report the first detection of Jaagsiekte Sheep Retrovirus (JSRV)-related and Enzootic Nasal Tumor Virus 2 (ENTV-2)-related sequences, alongside endemic arboviruses. Our study aimed to…

Violence exposure is associated with preference for masculine faces: evidence from Senegal.

It has been suggested that in threatening environments, both women and men should prefer more masculine men as romantic and coalition partners, respectively. Empirical evidence for this hypothesis has been weak or inconsistent, primarily because most experimental research has focused on elevating the perceived danger from other men through virtual threats. This study investigates whether personal experience with violence predicts the preference for masculine features in 326 Senegalese participants presented with pairs of manipulated facial photographs of West African men (one more feminine, on…

HIV prevalence in pregnant women attending antenatal consultations in Senegal in 2021.

HIV/AIDS infection is a significant public health issue, particularly among vulnerable populations like pregnant women. Despite progress in prevention, diagnosis, early management and treatment, there is still a need to strengthen efforts toward eliminating mother-to-child transmission (eMTCT). This study aimed to update the seroprevalence of HIV in pregnant women attending antenatal consultations in Senegal. Blood samples from 1,227 participants were collected from March to July 2021. The plasma samples were processed within 2 h after collection and were frozen at - 80 °C or stored at - 20 °C…

Bartonella quintana Transmitted by Head Lice: An Outbreak of Trench Fever in Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Louse-borne trench fever caused by Bartonella quintana is a neglected public health concern, known to be transmitted from body louse feces via scratching. No viable B. quintana have ever been isolated from head lice before; therefore, their role as a vector is still poorly understood. METHODS: In Senegal, the implementation of a permanent local surveillance system in a point-of-care laboratory (POC) allows the monitoring of emerging diseases. Here we used culture as well as molecular and genomic approaches to document an outbreak of trench fever associated with head lice in the vi…

Prevalence and Predictors of Liver Fibrosis in People Living with Hepatitis B in Senegal.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is the first cause of liver cirrhosis and cancer in West Africa. Although the exposure to additional environmental and infectious risk factors may lead to the faster progression of liver disease, few large-scale studies have evaluated the determinants of HBV-related liver fibrosis in the region. We used transient elastography to evaluate the prevalence of liver fibrosis and assessed the association between HBV markers and significant liver fibrosis in a cohort of people living with HBV in Dakar, Senegal. The prevalence of significant liver fibrosis was 12.5% (…

Filtering Inequality: Screening and Knowledge in Senegal's Topography of Hepatitis B Care.

Only a fraction of the estimated tenth or so of Senegalese who are chronically infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV) have been diagnosed. Of these, few have been assessed for their risk of progressing to potentially fatal liver disease (indicating need for treatment), and fewer still are taking antiviral drugs. A massive gap between those needing and getting treatment is widely acknowledged among experts. But given that HBV and its biomedical treatment options are largely invisible in bodies, health data, care practices, public messaging, or mass media, how can we observe, ethnographically, th…

Multifoci and multiserotypes circulation of dengue virus in Senegal between 2017 and 2018.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is a mosquito born disease associated with self-limited to life threatening illness. First detected in Senegal in the nineteenth century, and despite its growing incidence this last decade, significant knowledge gaps exist in our knowledge of genetic diversity of circulating strains. This study highlights the circulating serotypes and genotypes between January 2017 and December 2018 and their spatial and temporal distribution throughout all regions of Senegal. METHODS: We used 56 dengue virus (DENV) strains for the analysis collected from 11 sampling areas: 39 from al…

Genetic evidence for imported malaria and local transmission in Richard Toll, Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Malaria elimination efforts can be undermined by imported malaria infections. Imported infections are classified based on travel history. METHODS: A genetic strategy was applied to better understand the contribution of imported infections and to test for local transmission in the very low prevalence region of Richard Toll, Senegal. RESULTS: Genetic relatedness analysis, based upon molecular barcode genotyping data derived from diagnostic material, provided evidence for both imported infections and ongoing local transmission in Richard Toll. Evidence for imported malaria included …

Molecular epidemiology of Plasmodium falciparum by multiplexed amplicon deep sequencing in Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Molecular epidemiology can provide important information regarding the genetic diversity and transmission of Plasmodium falciparum, which can assist in designing and monitoring elimination efforts. However, malaria molecular epidemiology including understanding the genetic diversity of the parasite and performing molecular surveillance of transmission has been poorly documented in Senegal. Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) offers a practical, fast and high-throughput approach to understand malaria population genetics. This study aims to unravel the population structure of P. falcipa…
