Extra-large letter spacing improves reading in dyslexia.

Although the causes of dyslexia are still debated, all researchers agree that the main challenge is to find ways that allow a child with dyslexia to read more words in less time, because reading more is undisputedly the most efficient intervention for dyslexia. Sophisticated training programs exist, but they typically target the component skills of reading, such as phonological awareness. After the component skills have improved, the main challenge remains (that is, reading deficits must be treated by reading more--a vicious circle for a dyslexic child). Here, we show that a simple manipulatio

The Biological Threat: The Threat of Planetary Quarantine Failure as a Result of Outer Space Exploration by Humans.

The paper presents the results of experiments with spore-forming bacteria and microscopic fungi performed in the framework of the Russian Research Program outside the International Space Station. It has been found that microorganisms not only survive in this extreme environment, but also retain reproductive ability. Moreover, most microorganisms exhibit an increase in biochemical activity and resistance to antimicrobial agents, specifically antibiotics. These findings are of obvious interest to the developers of both planetary quarantine methods and biomedical safety systems for manned space e

Entrepreneurs' 'Triadic Spatial Paradox': theorising the hybrid home-based business workspace experience.

Responding to literature calls to advance theoretical knowledge of the importance of space in entrepreneurship research, we develop 'Triadic Spatial Paradox' as a conceptual model emanating from the creative experiences of entrepreneurs operating home-based businesses (HBBs). Providing a theorised, nuanced unpacking of hybrid entrepreneurial home/workspace experiences, we contribute to entrepreneurship literature by enhancing empirically informed knowledge of neglected space-contexts where paradoxical tensions pervade the lived home/workspace experiences and perceptions of entrepreneurs. The c

Non-Surgical Carpal Arch Space Augmentation for Median Nerve Decompression.

The carpal tunnel is a tightly bounded space, making the median nerve prone to compression and eventually leading to carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel release surgery transects the transverse carpal ligament to expand the tunnel arch space, decompress the median nerve, and relieve the associated symptoms. However, the surgical procedure unavoidably disrupts essential anatomical, biomechanical and physiological functions of the wrist, potentially causing reduced grip strength, pillar pain, carpal bone instability, scar tissue formation, and perineural fibrosis. It is desirable to decompress

[The Jupiter-2 slow-rotation system].

The experience of space missions shows that functional disorders in crewmembers on the type of space motion sickness (SMS) may develop on the initial stage of flight. Longer exposure in micro-g causes a wide range of debilitative changes in the vital body systems. Artificial gravity produced by spacecraft rotation might be a universal tool to counteract the impacts of prolonged microgravity on the human body. However, the significance of SMS does not become less high because of a new factor, i.e. the rotating environment. Research system Jupiter 2 is a stand-alone slow-rotating ground facility

Intraocular sustained drug delivery using implantable polymeric devices.

Vitreoretinal diseases involving age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are refractory to most topical or systemic drugs. The retina and the vitreous cavity have a unique position regarding pharmacokinetics in that the inner and outer blood retinal barriers separate the retina and vitreous from the systemic circulation. Eye drops achieve minimal therapeutic concentrations in the vitreoretinal tissue. Drug delivery systems are a strategy to address this. Intraocular sustained drug release using implantable devices has been investigated to treat vitreoretinal diseases. Possible targeted diseases

The patterns and associated factors of life-space in older patients at 6 months after percutaneous coronary intervention: a latent class analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Life-space is a critical indicator of recovery in older patients after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). We sought to explore its latent classes at 6 months after PCI and to analyze the influence factors associated with different classes. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the cardiac research centers of three tertiary comprehensive hospitals located along the eastern coastal region of China. The study ultimately included 315 older patients who had undergone PCI as the participants. The patients' life-space were assessed using the Life-space Assessment-China

"Dengue fever is not just urban or rural: Reframing its spatial categorization.".

Infectious diseases exploit niches that are often spatially defined as urban and/or rural. Yet spatial research on infectious diseases often fails to define "urban" and "rural" and how these contexts might influence their epidemiology. We use dengue fever, thought to be mostly an urban disease with rural foci, as a device to explore local definitions of urban and rural spaces and the impact of these spaces on dengue risk in the province of Esmeraldas, Ecuador. Ecuador, like many countries, only uses population size and administrative function to define urban and rural locales. Interviews condu

The effect of space arrangement between anterior teeth on their retraction with clear aligners in first premolar extraction treatment: a finite element study.

INTRODUCTION: Clear aligner therapy has become increasingly popular in recent years, although it has encountered several difficulties in premolar extraction treatment. These difficulties include anterior dentition, lingual tipping and extrusion. The design of the present clinical scheme usually set a tiny space between the anterior teeth before retraction in order to obtain an ideal outcome. The objective of our research was to analyze the effect of the existing spaces during retraction. METHODS: Models including maxillary dentition without first premolars, maxilla, periodontal ligaments, gin

Visual disturbances during prolonged space missions.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: During prolonged spaceflight, astronauts often experience ocular changes, due to constant head-ward fluid shifts in space as compared with Earth. This article reviews symptoms, likely causes, and potential solutions, such as lower body negative pressure, to counteract space-associated neuroocular syndrome (SANS). RECENT FINDINGS: Low gravity conditions and other aspects of spaceflight affect the eye detrimentally, causing SANS which is characterized by optic disc edema, choroidal thickening, cotton wool spots, and a hyperopic shift. SANS is probably caused by altered hemody

Stem cell health and tissue regeneration in microgravity.

Exposure to microgravity causes significant mechanical unloading of mammalian tissues, resulting in rapid alterations of their physiology, which poses a significant risk for long-duration manned spaceflight. The immediate degenerative effects of spaceflight we understand best are those studied during short-term low-Earth-orbit experiments, and include rapid microgravity-adaptive bone and muscle loss, loss of cardiovascular capacity, defects in wound and bone fracture healing, and impaired immune function. Over the long-term, exposure to microgravity may cause severe deficits in mammalian stem

Beyond multisensory peripersonal space: Multiple origins of tactile facilitation induced by approaching stimuli.

Whether reaching for an object or avoiding a potential threat, our ability to interact with the world relies on anticipating physical contact with nearby objects. This ability is thought to depend on the facilitation of tactile processing whenever an object enters the region surrounding the body where physical interaction is possible, referred to as 'peripersonal space'. Traditionally, these facilitation effects have been ascribed to the activity of the peripersonal neurons, which show maximal responses when tactile stimuli on the body co-occur with nearby visual or auditory stimuli, and would

Space Radiation Effects on the Glutathione Redox Cycle and Cataract Formation.

INTRODUCTION: With increasingly ambitious space ventures, astronauts face numerous hazards, including radiation, isolation, altered gravity fields, and hostile environments. Cataracts pose a significant challenge to astronauts' health and performance, both in space and upon returning to Earth. These concerns intensify with deep space exploration, where exposure to high-energy ionizing radiation in the form of galactic cosmic rays, solar particle events, and heavy ions accelerate cataract development. METHODS: This review synthesizes research from Embase, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Grey L

SPACE-Postpartum: a multidomain biopsychosocial framework for predicting chronic pain and impaired recovery after cesarean delivery - proof-of-concept report.

BACKGROUND: Chronic postsurgical pain after cesarean delivery affects 15%-17% of women and impairs maternal recovery, yet existing prediction models predominantly rely on demographic or procedural factors, with acute pain intensity a key but limited predictor. Symptom cluster research in chronic pain populations has consistently identified co-occurring domains in sleep, pain, affect, cognition, and energy (SPACE) that may represent a modifiable risk phenotype. METHODS: The SPACE-Postpartum framework was conceptualized through triangulation of qualitative interviews with postpartum individuals

Subtle object location perception deficits in Korsakoff's syndrome.

(Wernicke-)Korsakoff's syndrome (KS) is a neuropsychiatric syndrome, caused by vitamin B1 (thiamine) deficiency often resulting from chronic alcohol consumption. KS is characterized by severe cognitive problems, such as impaired explicit memory and executive functions. Visuospatial perception (VSP) refers to the identification of objects (object perception), and the localization of objects (space perception). Object perception can be described as the cooperation between visual representation and semantic information on the objects' functional properties. Space perception is the mental represen
