[Spinal cord injury associated with spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma].

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma (SSEH) is a disease with low incidence and high morbidity/mortality. It can cause severe … ered to have a good functional prognosis, related to usually posterior and incomplete sensory-motor spinal cord injuries that would benefit from early specific rehabilitative treatment.

Spinal Cord Injury Following Minimally Invasive Spinal Decompression.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive lumbar decompression (MILD) is an interventional procedure for the treatment of patients with symptomatic lumbar spinal stenosis. Spinal cord injury after MILD has not yet been reported in literature. CASE REPORT: We describe a case of a 95-year-old woman who underwent the MILD procedure at the L1-L2 level for symptomatic lumbar spinal stenosis. Following the procedure, the patient noticed lower extremity weakness and numbness, suprapubic numbness, groin pain, and urinary retention. Emergent magnetic resonance imaging of the lumbar spine exhibited new cord signa

Spinal Meninges and Their Role in Spinal Cord Injury: A Neuroanatomical Review.

Current recommendations support early surgical decompression and blood pressure augmentation after traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). Elevated intraspinal pressure (ISP), however, has probably been underestimated in the pathophysiology of SCI. Recent studies provide some evidence that ISP measurements and durotomy may be beneficial for individuals suffering from SCI. Compression of the spinal cord against the meninges in SCI patients causes a "compartment-like" syndrome. In such cases, intentional durotomy with augmentative duroplasty to reduce ISP and improve spinal cord perfusion pressure (

The timing of spinal stabilization in polytrauma and in patients with spinal cord injury.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Despite improved care of multiple injured patients, controversial data about the best time point for decompression and stabilization of spine fractures and spinal cord injuries are published. Some studies even question the value of surgical management. RECENT FINDINGS: In several mostly retrospective studies and a meta-analysis, there is growing evidence that early decompression and stabilization of spine injuries seems to be beneficial, especially in more severely injured patients. Early stabilization seems to reduce length of stay and pulmonary complications. Some studies…

Validity of the trunk assessment scale for spinal cord injury (TASS) and the trunk control test in individuals with spinal cord injury.

Background: The Trunk Assessment Scale for Spinal Cord Injury (TASS) and the Trunk Control Test for individuals with a Spinal Cord Injury (TCT-SCI) are highly reliable assessment tools for evaluating the trunk function of individuals with SCIs. However, the potential differences in the validity of these two scales are unclear. Objectives: To evaluate the criterion validity of the TASS and the construct validity of the TASS and TCT-SCI.Participants and Methods: We evaluated 30 individuals with SCIs (age 63.8 ± 10.7 yrs, 17 with tetraplegia). To evaluate criterion validity, we calculated Spearman

Dual spinal cord injury: a case of acute traumatic T9 AIS A spinal cord injury complicated by transverse myelitis.

INTRODUCTION: While the general principles of treatment of TM are agreed upon, the rarity of the disease has made determining its clinical course and etiology quite difficult. This report aims to inform these debates by demonstrating the susceptibility of at least one individual to transverse myelitis following an acute SCI. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report follows the clinical course of a 17 year old. Caucasian female that contracted transverse myelitis (TM) following an acute traumatic spinal cord injury. This patient originally presented as a T9 AIS A traumatic SCI, and was then re-grad

Epidemiology of spinal cord injuries in three selected counties in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) presents a significant health challenge, characterised by damage to the spinal cord resulting from trauma, inflammation, tumours or other aetiologies. This injury often leads to a range of debilitating consequences, including loss of motor function, sensation, sphincter control and autonomic nerve function below the site of injury, as well as challenges with self-care and performance of instrumental activities of daily living (ADLs). OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the prevalence, risk factors and characteristics of SCI among adult patients in th

Therapeutic Effect of Platelet-Rich Plasma in Rat Spinal Cord Injuries.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is prepared by centrifuging fresh blood in an anticoagulant state, and harvesting the platelet-rich portion or condensing platelets. Studies have consistently demonstrated that PRP concentrates are an abundant source of growth factors, such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor β (TGF-β), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), and epithelial growth factor (EGF). The complex mechanisms underlying spinal cord injury (SCI) diminish intrinsic repair and neuronal regeneration. Several studies have suggested that growth factor-promoted axonal

Through Clinical Observation: The History of Priapism After Spinal Cord Injuries.

Since ancient times, physicians of antiquity noted the occurrence of priapism in some spinal cord injuries. Although priests saw it as a consequence of curses and witchcraft, after clinical observations of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the first medical hypotheses emerged in the 17th-19th centuries completed and argued by neuroscience and neurology developed in the European laboratories and hospitals. This study aims to present a short overview of the history of clinical observations of posttraumatic male priapism after spinal cord injuries since antiquity until the beginning of the 20th ce…

Regenerative Potential of Ependymal Cells for Spinal Cord Injuries Over Time.

Stem cells have a high therapeutic potential for the treatment of spinal cord injury (SCI). We have shown previously that endogenous stem cell potential is confined to ependymal cells in the adult spinal cord which could be targeted for non-invasive SCI therapy. However, ependymal cells are an understudied cell population. Taking advantage of transgenic lines, we characterize the appearance and potential of ependymal cells during development. We show that spinal cord stem cell potential in vitro is contained within these cells by birth. Moreover, juvenile cultures generate more neurospheres an

Resistopalatography as an assistive technology for users with spinal cord injuries.

Translating a desired user's input using conventional methods such as a keyboard and mouse for the computer, or a joystick for a wheelchair is a major challenge faced by users whom have no limb control. This paper describes an iteration of Resistopalatography, a method using the tongue as a pointing device to emulate the use of the hand for cursor movement and wheelchair control. The system employs force sensitive sensors located within the mouth on a dental retainer plate to measure the tongue's pressure against the hard palate. The position and force of tongue against the sensors can be tran

Cervical spinal cord injuries associated with resuscitation from fatal circulatory collapse.

INTRODUCTION: Fatal cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) associated with collapse of the circulatory and/or respiratory system usually consists of high cervical SCI caused by high-energy trauma. As the elderly population grows, however, the etiology of fatal SCI may be changing. The aim of the present study was to understand the current clinical features of fatal SCI. METHODS: Retrospective analysis was performed on 73 consecutive patients with acute cervical SCI between 2007 and 2013. Fourteen (19%) of them presented in a state of coma due to severe circulatory collapse after cardiac arrest (CA

Online support for individuals with spinal cord injuries: an ethnographic investigation.

BACKGROUND: Although social support is an important protective factor for individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCIs), individuals often encounter significant barriers to obtaining support after experiencing a SCI. It has been suggested that the Internet may serve to help individuals with disabilities overcome common barriers in obtaining support, yet research examining the efficacy of Internet-based support for individuals with SCI has been mixed. OBJECTIVE: To develop a more nuanced understanding of how individuals with SCI can or might use the Internet for support. DESIGN: Using an ethno…
