Correspondence between cognitive and neural representations for phonology, orthography, and semantics in supramarginal compared to angular gyrus.

The angular and supramarginal gyri (AG and SMG) together constitute the inferior parietal lobule (IPL) and have been associated with cognitive functions that support reading. How those functions are distributed across the AG and SMG is a matter of debate, the resolution of which is hampered by inconsistencies across stereotactic atlases provided by the major brain image analysis software packages. Schematic results from automated meta-analyses suggest primarily semantic (word meaning) processing in the left AG, with more spatial overlap among phonological (auditory word form), orthographic (vi

Longitudinal effects of phonological awareness intervention on morphological awareness in children with speech impairment.

PURPOSE: This study examined reading performance and morphological awareness development in 2 groups of children with speech impairment who had received differing types of intervention during their preschool years. METHOD: The children were aged between 7;6 and 9;5 (years;months) at the time of the study. Group 1 (n = 8) had received preschool intervention to facilitate phonological awareness and letter knowledge in addition to improving speech production. Group 2 (n = 9) had received preschool intervention that focused solely on improving speech intelligibility. A third group of children wit

The language of marketing hyperbole and consumer perception-The case of Glasgow.

The aim of the study was to explore the potential of a timed word association task to generate detailed insights into the perception of Glasgow city and its people which could inform destination and brand marketing. Destination marketers have a challenge to convey the tourist destination image to attract and satisfy the expectations of its visitors. Yet destination perceptions are often the result of multiple tourist visitor experiences at a location, neglecting the voice of the resident. The extent to which word associations varied by participants' relationship to Glasgow was identified in te

Dyslexia and DYX1C1: deficits in reading and spelling associated with a missense mutation.

The status of DYX1C1 (C15q21.3) as a susceptibility gene for dyslexia is unclear. We report the association of this gene with reading and spelling ability in a sample of adolescent twins and their siblings. Family-based association analyses were carried out on 13 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in DYX1C1, typed in 790 families with up to 5 offspring and tested on 6 validated measures of lexical processing (irregular word) and grapheme-phoneme decoding (pseudo-word) reading- and spelling-based measures of dyslexia, as well as a short-term memory measure. Significant association was obser

Novel word learning deficits in infants at family risk for dyslexia.

Children of reading age diagnosed with dyslexia show deficits in reading and spelling skills, but early markers of later dyslexia are already present in infancy in auditory processing and phonological domains. Deficits in lexical development are not typically associated with dyslexia. Nevertheless, it is possible that early auditory/phonological deficits would have detrimental effects on the encoding and storage of novel lexical items. Word-learning difficulties have been demonstrated in school-aged dyslexic children using paired associate learning tasks, but earlier manifestations in infants

Increased intra-individual reaction time variability in cocaine-dependent subjects: role of cocaine-related cues.

Neuroimaging data suggest that impaired performance on response inhibition and information processing tests in cocaine-dependent subjects is related to prefrontal and frontal cortical dysfunction and that dysfunction in these brain areas may underlie some aspects of cocaine addiction. In subjects with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and other psychiatric disorders, the Intra-Individual Reaction Time Variability (IIRTV) has been associated with frontal cortical dysfunction. In the present study, we evaluated IIRTV parameters in cocaine-dependent subjects vs. controls using a cocaine St

Spontaneous trigger words associated with confirmed out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: a descriptive pilot study of emergency calls.

BACKGROUND: According to the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR), the trigger words used by callers that are associated with cardiac arrest constitute a scientific knowledge gap. This study was designed to find hypothetical trigger words in emergency calls in order to improve the specificity of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest recognition. METHODS: In this descriptive pilot study conducted in a Finnish hospital district, linguistic contents of 80 emergency calls of dispatcher-suspected or EMS-encountered out-of-hospital cardiac arrests between January 1, 2017 and May 31, 20

Selective processing of emotional information in body dysmorphic disorder.

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a syndrome characterized by distress about imagined defects in one's appearance. Though categorized as a somatoform disorder, BDD is marked by many characteristics associated with social phobia (e.g., fear of negative evaluation) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (e.g., intrusive thoughts about one's ugliness, checking). In the present experiment, we tested whether BDD patients exhibit selective processing of threat in the emotional Stroop paradigm as do anxiety-disordered patients. Relative to healthy control participants, BDD patients exhibited greater Stroo

Music literacy improves reading skills via bilateral orthographic development.

Considerable evidence suggests that musical education induces structural and functional neuroplasticity in the brain. This study aimed to explore the potential impact of such changes on word-reading proficiency. We investigated whether musical training promotes the development of uncharted orthographic regions in the right hemisphere leading to better reading abilities. A total of 60 healthy, right-handed culturally matched professional musicians and controls took part in this research. They were categorised as normo-typical readers based on their reading speed (syl/sec) and subdivided into tw

Did Reagan Decline?

BACKGROUND: When Ronald Reagan revealed his Alzheimer's diagnosis in 1994, it rekindled a lingering question: did dementia affect Reagan during his eight years as president? Amid countless countervailing anecdotes, Berisha et al. (2015) stepped in with an inventive systematic test. Scouring Ronald Reagan's 46 formal press conferences for specific linguistic markers, the study discovered "significant differences in variables known to be associated with the onset of dementia" (962). OBJECTIVE: Here I test whether Reagan's unique word usage rate decline is spurious, a function of reporters' incr

Neutral auditory words immediately followed by painful electric shock may show reduced next-day recollection.

In this study, we investigated the effect of experimentally delivered acute pain on memory. Twenty-five participants participated in experimental sessions on consecutive days. The first session involved a categorization task to encourage memory encoding. There were two conditions, presented in randomized order, in which participants listened to a series of words, which were repeated three times. In one condition, one-third of the word items were immediately followed by a painful electrical shock. This word-shock pairing was consistent across repetition and the pain-paired items were presented

Estimated pulse wave velocity and incident cognitive impairment risk in stroke patients: a longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Arterial stiffness is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Estimated pulse wave velocity (ePWV), as a surrogate marker of arterial stiffness, may be associated with cognitive decline through vascular pathways. Yet studies examining the relationship between ePWV and cognitive impairment in stroke patients remain limited. METHODS: Using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) collected between 2011 and 2020, we included 2,003 stroke patients. ePWV was calculated using age and blood pressure, and cognitive impairment

Aging and the neuropsychiatry of multiple sclerosis: a cross-sectional study.

Aging in multiple sclerosis (MS) affects clinical and radiological disease activity. Yet, evidence is equivocal about the effects of aging on the neuropsychiatric sequelae of MS, including anxiety, depression, fatigue, and cognitive dysfunction. This study aimed to clarify how the neuropsychiatric symptoms of MS vary across ages. A consecutive cohort of 1194 people with MS (pwMS) underwent neuropsychological testing using the Minimal Assessment of Cognitive Function in MS, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale sub-scales for anxiety (HADS-A) and depression (HADS-D), Modified Fatigue Impact

Association of Left Atrial Structure and Function With Cognitive Function in Adults With Metabolic Syndrome.

Atrial fibrillation has been associated with cognitive impairment. Whether subclinical abnormalities in atrial function and substrate predisposing to atrial fibrillation impact cognitive function has received limited attention. We tested associations of echocardiographic markers of atrial structure and function with cognitive function and decrease in 510 participants with obesity and metabolic syndrome (mean age SD of 64.4 [5.2] years in men and 66.5 [3.9] years in women). Left atrial (LA) markers (volume index, emptying fraction, strain, function index, and stiffness index) were estimated bas

Association between AVPR1A, DRD2, and ASPM and endophenotypes of communication disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Speech sound disorder (SSD) is one of the most common communication disorders, with a prevalence rate of 16% at 3 years of age, and an estimated 3.8% of children still presenting speech difficulties at 6 years of age. Several studies have identified promising associations between communication disorders and genes in brain and neuronal pathways; however, there have been few studies focusing on SSD and its associated endophenotypes. On the basis of the hypothesis that neuronal genes may influence endophenotypes common to communication disorders, we focused on three genes related to b
