A histiocytic sarcoma was present at birth in a pig. On the basis of ultra-structure and structural-protein composition (presence of alpha-smooth-muscle actin but not keratin), the sarcoma component was identified as a leiomyofibrosarcoma. Lipid-laden macrophages (histiocytes), which permeated the tumour in an apparently random fashion, were somewhat atypical in that they were negative for some macrophage markers; they gave a reaction, however, for CDw14. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology is an effective modality in the diagnosis of soft tissue lesions. Previous studies compared FNA with surgical biopsies and reported high sensitivity and specificity rates. No study has evaluated the diagnostic yield of FNA to that of needle core biopsies (NCBs). One hundred seventeen FNAs were performed by our clinical staff for soft tissue lesions (1980-1992). Allergic or anaphylactic-like reactions have been reported with cis-dichlorodiammineplatinum(II) (CDDP) administration. We have seen two reactions among 50 patients treated in a phase II trial of CDDP. Both patients were successfully rechallenged after diphenhydramine pretreatment, and therapy was continued. In vivo and in vitro studies performed in one patient included negative skin tests, negative histamine release assay, negative lymphocyte stimulation studies, and normal total serum IgE.
