Surgery is the treatment of acute calculous cholecystitis. Mortality and morbidity are considerable for patients with anesthetic risk factors. In this context, ultrasound-guided percutaneous drainage seems to be a alternative to urgent surgery. The place of this technic and its results have not been determined with certainty. We report our experience of percutaneous drainage in acute calculous cholecystitis, based on a series of 27 patients treated between May 1992 and May 1996. A favorable course was observed after drainage in 26 patients, one patient was operated urgently for purulent perito

Between January 1994 and December 1996 72 patients were treated with 76 Gianturco oesophageal stents for oesophageal obstruction or perforation. The patients were followed prospectively in order to determine the effectiveness in improving dysphagia, to establish long term patency, survival times and complications. The mean dysphagia score prior to stenting was 3, improving to a mean score of 1 after stenting. Swallowing failed to improve in three patients. No serious complications were seen at stent insertion. Patients tolerated the procedure well with no complications in 63%. The most frequen

We describe two cases of coil malpositioning that occurred during endovascular occlusion of saccular basilar tip aneurysms with fibered platinum microcoils. The technique of endovascular coil extraction, accomplished successfully and without complication in both cases, is described and may be applicable to recently available controlled-detachment coil systems.

Fourth-ventricular shunting is commonly used to treat symptomatic posterior fossa cysts of the Dandy-Walker malformation and trapped fourth ventricle. Although the benefits of this procedure have been widely reported, there is a paucity of data on the pitfalls of posterior fossa shunting in the neurosurgical literature. During the 4-year period from July 1989 to June 1993, we placed fourth-ventricular shunts in 12 patients. Remarkably, 5 patients suffered complications related to posterior fossa catheter placement (42% rate). Three of these patients developed new cranial nerve dysfunction caus

BACKGROUND: More than 50% of esophageal cancer patients are diagnosed with advanced diseases and commonly experience dysphagia, some of whom even have tracheoesophageal fistula. Self-expandable metal stent (SEMS) is one of the recommended palliative methods, although complications such as chest pain and stent migration are not uncommon. The goal of this study was to examine the predictors of stent migration.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study to include patients with esophageal cancer and dysphagia/tracheoesophageal fistula. Clinicopathological information, stent characteristi

AIMS: Stemless humeral implants have been developed to overcome stem-related complications in total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA). However, stemless implant designs may hypothetically result in less stable initial fixation, potentially affecting long-term survival. The aim of this study is to investigate early fixation and migration patterns of the stemless humeral component of the Simpliciti Shoulder System and to evaluate clinical outcomes.
METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, radiostereometric analysis (RSA) radiographs were obtained in 24 patients at one day, six weeks, six months, on

OBJECTIVE: High rates of midterm failure of the Nellix EndoVascular Aneurysm Sealing (EVAS) System resulted in device withdrawal from the UK market. The study aim was to report long term Nellix EVAS outcomes and management of a failing device.
METHODS: A retrospective review of EVAS procedures at a tertiary unit was performed. Device failure was defined as a triad of stent migration, stent separation, and secondary sac expansion, or any intervention for type 1 endoleak, device rupture, or explant.
RESULTS: 161 (male n = 140, female n = 21) patients with a median follow up of 6.0 (IQR 5.0-6.6

INTRODUCTION: Inferior vena cava (IVC) filter penetration of the caval wall is a well-documented complication. Less frequently, the struts of an IVC filter can penetrate a vertebral body that can lead to symptoms of abdominal pain. Vertebral penetration poses a management challenge, and characteristics for successful endovascular retrieval of such filters has not been reported.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present 2 cases of IVC filters with vertebral body penetration that were successfully retrieved through an endovascular approach. On preprocedure computed tomography, both patients had a small zone

Transcatheter closure of the left atrial appendage (LAA) is increasingly considered as an alternative to oral anticoagulation in patients with previous major bleeding or at high-risk of bleeding. Device embolization with transcatheter LAA closure is a rare complication. Most cases are asymptomatic, but it can be life threatening. Depending on the location of embolization, percutaneous retrieval is feasible. Snares are usually used for retrieval, but other devices may be used. We report the case of a 63-year gentleman who underwent an uneventful LAA closure with Watchman device and routine test

BACKGROUND: Previously, we developed an image-based modeling system (V-Modeler) to investigate geometric changes in stent grafts (SGs) following their implantation for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). The aims of the present study were to improve this system for clinical use, to chronologically analyze postoperative morphological changes in SGs, and to demonstrate scenarios of SG migration.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Contrast-enhanced computed tomography data from 36 patients who underwent endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) for AAAs were used, with 72 centerline paths, in total, analyzed for bil

PURPOSES: Our study aims to enhance the accuracy of the clinical diagnosis in patients with vaginal mesh extrusion following transvaginal mesh placement for pelvic organ prolapse using significant clinical parameters and risk factors.
METHODS: All patients who underwent vaginal mesh removal were retrospectively reviewed from January 2000 to May 2014. Eligible patients were divided into two groups according to the presence of vaginal mesh extrusion.
RESULTS: A total of 862 patients, 798 were included. 357 (44.7%) had evidence of vaginal mesh extrusion, and 441 (55.3%) had no evidence of vagin

Percutaneous left atrial appendage (LAA) closure is gaining interest as an alternative option for prevention of strokes in patients with Atrial Fibrillation (AF), especially for those with contraindications to anticoagulation. Complications from these procedures are well described in the medical literature. LAA closures may lead to pericardial effusion, device-associated thrombus, and device embolization. Understanding the reasons for embolization, strategies to avoid embolization, and the techniques for retrieval of LAA devices (ACP/AMULET and WATCHMAN) should be appreciated by endovascular i

We describe migration of bilateral carotid stents in a 63-year-old man shortly after stenting. Carotid stent migration was found four days post-procedure on the right side and one day post-procedure on the left side on angiography and duplex ultrasound, respectively. This is the first reported case of bilateral carotid artery stenting complicated by bilateral proximal migration of open-cell design stents in the early post-procedure period.

Percutaneous closure of atrial septal defects in adults has emerged as an alternative to surgery. We report a sequela of such closure in a 16-year-old boy: embolization of the atrial septal defect occluder into the main pulmonary artery when the patient experienced an episode of intense coughing immediately after device deployment. We removed the device surgically and closed the atrial septal defect in a standard manner, with an autologous pericardial patch.

IMPORTANCE: Silastic implants are popular for cosmetic cheek augmentation. We describe the computed tomographic (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in 5 cases (4 patients) with penetration of the medial aspect of Silastic cheek implants through the anterior maxillary sinus wall.
OBSERVATIONS: Three cases demonstrated associated sinus mucosal thickening, and 3 cases demonstrated infection surrounding the implant. In 3 cases, the implants migrated into the maxillary sinus, and in 1 case the implant also eroded through the nasoantral wall and extended into the nasal cavity.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: We describe a patient who developed complete right oculomotor nerve palsy after endovascular coiling for a ruptured posterior communicating artery aneurysm caused by migration of the coils outside the aneurysm.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old woman was admitted with an acute subarachnoid hemorrhage. She underwent, on the day of admission, endovascular coiling of a ruptured posterior communicating artery aneurysm. Four hours postcoiling, complete right oculomotor nerve palsy developed because of extrusion of the coils outside the aneurysm. The patient recovered
