Can the Fatigue Severity Scale 7-item version be used across different patient populations as a generic fatigue measure--a comparative study using a Rasch model approach.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue is a disabling symptom associated with reduced quality of life in various populations living with chronic illnesses. The transfer of knowledge about fatigue from one group to another is crucial in both research and healthcare. Outcomes should be validly and reliably comparable between groups and should not be unduly influenced by diagnostic variations. The present study evaluates whether the Fatigue Severity Scale 7-item version (FSS-7) demonstrates similar item hierarchy across people with multiple sclerosis, stroke or HIV/AIDS to ensure valid comparisons between groups, a

Surviving a gender-variant childhood: the views of transgender adults on the needs of gender-variant children and their parents.

Adults with gender-variant childhoods have often lived traumatic lives because of the attitudes and limited understanding that people in their environment had of the concept of gender variance. This study explores the childhoods of transgender adults with the aim to understand their gender-related difficulties as children, in order to identify their needs and the needs of their parents at that time. The authors conducted a semi-structured survey with 110 transgender adults in order to explore their retrospective childhood experiences. Responses were analyzed through content and thematic coding

PrEPped for COVID? The association between HIV-PrEP use and COVID-19 among men and gender diverse people who have sex with men: findings from three large online surveys in the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: Oral tenofovir and emtricitabine taken as pre-exposure prophylaxis (HIV-PrEP) is highly effective at reducing Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) acquisition. Nucleotide analogues have also been shown to inhibit Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) polymerase activity in vitro, raising the question as to whether tenofovir-based HIV-PrEP could be useful for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. We sought to examine the association between HIV-PrEP use and self-reported COVID-19 testing outcomes and respiratory symptoms among men and gender diverse people w

Endocrine Health and Health Care Disparities in the Pediatric and Sexual and Gender Minority Populations: An Endocrine Society Scientific Statement.

Endocrine care of pediatric and adult patients continues to be plagued by health and health care disparities that are perpetuated by the basic structures of our health systems and research modalities, as well as policies that impact access to care and social determinants of health. This scientific statement expands the Society's 2012 statement by focusing on endocrine disease disparities in the pediatric population and sexual and gender minority populations. These include pediatric and adult lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA) persons. The writing group

Text-Messaging, Online Peer Support Group, and Coaching Strategies to Optimize the HIV Prevention Continuum for Youth: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: America's increasing HIV epidemic among youth suggests the need to identify novel strategies to leverage services and settings where youth at high risk (YAHR) for HIV can be engaged in prevention. Scalable, efficacious, and cost-effective strategies are needed, which support youth during developmental transitions when risks arise. Evidence-based behavioral interventions (EBIs) have typically relied on time-limited, scripted, and manualized protocols that were often delivered with low fidelity and lacked evidence for effectiveness. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine efficacy, im

Cross-sectional study of vitamin D levels, immunologic and virologic outcomes in HIV-infected adults.

CONTEXT: Vitamin D is increasingly recognized as an important immunomodulator. Lower levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25[OH]2D) are observed in persons living with HIV. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship of 25(OH)D, and 1,25(OH)2D to HIV viral load, and CD4+ T cells in HIV-infected adults. DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional study completed between January 2010 and April 2011. SETTING: This study was conducted with volunteers who received HIV care in Wisconsin at either a University-based HIV clinic or an urban communit

Prevalence of HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 infection among transgender women in Brazil: A multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Transgender Women and Travestis (TWT) are at increased risk for sexually transmitted infections due to contexts of vulnerability related to socioeconomic and behavioral factors. However, data on the prevalence of Human T-lymphotropic viruses type 1 and 2 (HTLV-1/2) in this population remain scarce. This study aimed to investigate the seroprevalence of HTLV-1/2 infection among TWT in five Brazilian capitals. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from 2019 to 2021 in five Brazilian capital cities, representing all geographic regions of the country. A

Evaluating HIV testing preferences and uptake of oral fluid-based HIV self-testing among men who have sex with men and transgender women in the Greater Manila Area of the Philippines: an explanatory sequential mixed-methods research protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Rapid antibody testing is a cornerstone in HIV case finding and management. Without tools for rapid detection and diagnosis of HIV infection, none of the downstream targets for linkage to antiretroviral therapy and viral suppression in the HIV treatment cascade could be achieved. In the Philippines, oral HIV self-testing (HIVST) has not been adapted for use. Moreover, no study has been conducted to determine HIV testing preferences and acceptability of oral HIVST among Filipino men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW). The protocol describes a mixed-method appr

Effects of gender-affirming hormone therapy on body fat: a retrospective case‒control study in Chinese transwomen.

BACKGROUND: There is insufficient research on how gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) affects body fat modifications in transwomen from China. It is unclear whether hormone therapy affects the prevalence of obesity and blood lipid levels within this population. The current research aimed to assess how GAHT and treatment duration had an impact on the change in and redistribution of body fat in Chinese transwomen. METHODS: This study included 40 transwomen who had not received GAHT and 59 who had. Body fat, blood lipid, and blood glucose levels were measured. GAHT is mainly a pharmacologic

Prevalence of anal cytology screening among persons with HIV and lack of access to high-resolution anoscopy at HIV care facilities.

BACKGROUND: People with HIV at highest risk of anal cancer include gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men and transgender women aged 35 years or older as well as other people with HIV aged 45 years or older. Identifying and treating precancerous lesions can reduce anal cancer incidence in these groups. We assessed the prevalence of anal cytology and access to high-resolution anoscopy among people with HIV overall and in those individuals at highest risk. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Medical Monitoring Project, a population-based

Integrating HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis and harm reduction among men who have sex with men and transgender women to address intersecting harms associated with stimulant use: a modelling study.

INTRODUCTION: Among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TW), stimulant use is high and has been associated with an increased risk of HIV infection, suicide and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. We used epidemic modelling to investigate these intersecting health harms among MSM/TW in Lima, Peru and assess whether they could be mitigated by prioritizing HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and harm reduction interventions among MSM/TW who use stimulants. METHODS: We adapted a dynamic model of HIV transmission among MSM/TW in Lima to incorporate stimulant use and increase

Online socializing among men who have sex with men and transgender people in Nairobi and Johannesburg and implications for public health-related research and health promotion: an analysis of qualitative and respondent-driven sampling survey data.

INTRODUCTION: There is little published literature about gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men and transgender individuals (MSM and TG)'s use of social media in sub-Saharan Africa, despite repressive social and/or criminalizing contexts that limit access to physical HIV prevention. We sought to describe MSM and TG's online socializing in Nairobi and Johannesburg, identifying the characteristics of those socializing online and those not, in order to inform the development of research and health promotion in online environments. METHODS: Respondent-driven sampling surveys were condu

Effect of Vitamin D Supplementation on Bone Turnover Markers During HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Using Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate-Emtricitabine in Men Who Have Sex with Men.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate-emtricitabine (TDF-FTC) reduces bone mineral density in HIV-uninfected men who have sex with men (MSM). We hypothesized that PrEP with TDF-FTC would increase bone turnover markers (BTMs) at week 24 and that vitamin D supplementation from weeks 24 to 48 would blunt this increase. Participants were from a cohort of 398 MSM and transgender women who received daily TDF-FTC for PrEP. At week 24, a prospective intervention group initiated vitamin D3 4,000 IU daily. Concurrent controls were selected from the cohort who took ≤400 IU/da

Experienced HIV-Related Stigma and Psychological Distress in Peruvian Sexual and Gender Minorities: A Longitudinal Study to Explore Mediating Roles of Internalized HIV-Related Stigma and Coping Styles.

Experiencing HIV-related stigma has important impacts on the mental health of people living with HIV, which has implications for treatment adherence, disease progression, and health outcomes. The impacts of stigma are particularly important to consider among sexual and gender minorities, who often face a disproportionate burden of HIV. To address the implications of stigma in these key populations, we leveraged a longitudinal study conducted among Peruvian sexual and gender minorities to compare the relative effects of multiple mediators affecting the relationship between experienced HIV-relat

Metabolic Effects of Preexposure Prophylaxis With Coformulated Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate and Emtricitabine.

BACKGROUND: Antiretroviral drugs have been associated with changes in lipids, fat mass and dat distribution. Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) has been shown to have a more favorable metabolic profile than other drugs in its class. However, the metabolic effects of TDF in preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) are unknown. METHODS: We evaluated the effects of TDF/emtricitabine (FTC) on lipids and body composition in a blinded, placebo-controlled PrEP trial. Participants enrolled in a metabolic subcohort (N = 251, TDF/FTC; N = 247, placebo) consented to fasting lipid panels, dual-energy X-ray absorp
