PURPOSE: To systematically review and meta-analyse the literature to determine which three-dimensional (3D) imaging modality provides the best diagnostic accuracy to detect pathologies of the long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A search was performed on PubMed, Embase®, and Cochrane. Studies that compared the diagnostic accuracy of 3D imaging modalities versus arthroscopy for the assessment of LHBT pathologies were included. Studies assessing superior labral anterior posterior (SLAP) lesions were excluded.
RESULTS: Fifteen studies were included; nine were eligible f

A challenging complication of arthroscopic biceps surgery is the persistent painful cramping of the biceps. There is a paucity of data upon nonsurgical treatment of this debilitating complication. We pro- pose an intramuscular injection of botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) for painful bicipital cramping after tenotomy of the long head of the biceps brachii tendon (LHBT). Ten patients with a painful Popeye sign after tenotomy of LHBT, were treated with intramuscular injection of 100 IU of BTX-A. Mean patient age was 56 years and mean time from surgery to infiltration was 317 days. The Quick Disabilitie

INTRODUCTION: The Single Assessment Numeric Evaluation (SANE) score is a brief method of evaluating patients' perception of the shoulder joint and has proven high correlation with other outcome measures that are more lengthy and time-consuming in daily practice. The SANE score to date has not been validated in Spanish.
OBJECTIVE: To translate, adapt, and validate the SANE score in Spanish.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: An initial translation and counter-translation was conducted by two bilingual evaluators and an official translator. Content validity was evaluated by a group of experts in shoulder s

BACKGROUND: Subacromial decompression, that consists of the release of the coracoid-acromial ligament, subacromial bursectomy and anterior-inferior acromioplasty, has traditionally been performed in the management of this pathology. However, the purpose of subacromial decompression procedure is not clearly explained. Our reaserch aimed to analyse the differences among the outcomes of arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (RCR) made with suture anchors, with or without the subacromial decompression procedure.
METHODS: 116 shoulders of 107 patients affected by rotator cuff (RC) tear were treated wit

BACKGROUND: A subacromial balloon spacer is an option to treat irreparable rotator cuff tears. We hypothesized that the balloon would restore glenohumeral contact pressure, the acromion-humeral interval, and deltoid load to intact values after a simulated irreparable supraspinatus tear in a cadaveric model.
METHODS: Fourteen cadaveric shoulders (mean age at the time of death, 67.9 years) were tested using a custom test frame. In this frame, glenohumeral contact pressure, the acromion-humeral interval, and deltoid load were measured using a digital sensor, a MicroScribe, and a spring scale, re

BACKGROUND: This study systematically summarizes quantitative imaging biomarker research in non-traumatic neck and shoulder musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). There were two research questions: 1) Are there quantitative imaging biomarkers associated with the presence of neck and shoulder MSDs?, 2) Are there quantitative imaging biomarkers associated with the severity of neck and shoulder MSDs?
METHODS: PubMed and SCOPUS were used for the literature search. One hundred and twenty-five studies met primary inclusion criteria. Data were extracted from 49 sufficient quality studies.
RESULTS: Most

The glenohumeral joint with instability is a common diagnosis that often requires surgery. The aim of this review was to present an overview of the anatomy of the glenohumeral joint with emphasis on instability based on the current literature and to describe the detailed anatomy and anatomical variants of the glenohumeral joint associated with anterior and posterior shoulder instability. A review was performed using PubMed/MEDLINE using key words: Search terms were "glenohumeral", "shoulder instability", "cadaver", "rotator interval", "anatomy", and "anatomical study". During the last decade,

BACKGROUND: In the case of rotator cuff tears, the biceps pulley can be stressed by the unstable biceps tendon, and this can subsequently affect the stability of the subscapularis tendon. Therefore, it is important to distinguish between normal variations and lesions of the biceps pulley that affect anterosuperior lesions in cases of rotator cuff tears.
METHODS: From January 2002 through November 2010, we observed biceps pulley and associated anterosuperior lesions in 589 of 634 cases (93%) of arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, including 72 cases (12.2%) of small tears, 219 cases (37.2%) of me

The authors present a new technique to improve active shoulder external rotation in patients with brachial plexus birth injury. Eight brachial plexus birth injury patients (aged 1.5 to 4.7 years) lacking active external rotation in adduction (<10 degrees) with congruent glenohumeral joints and no significant internal rotation contracture (passive external rotation >45 degrees) underwent neurotization of the infraspinatus branch of the suprascapular nerve with the spinal accessory nerve. Active and passive range of shoulder motion was measured postoperatively (3, 6, and 12 months). Parents' sat

The use of the word degeneration, particularly in the compensation arena, is not recommended. It is imprecise and is interpreted in different ways by radiologists, clinicians and insurers. Insurers use the word to conclude that any so called degenerative changes mean that there is age causation so that compensation can be denied. These changes can be caused by single or multiple injuries continuing heavy work and other causes. Each risk factor should be carefully assessed in each case.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess the contact pressure, force, and area over time for 4 common arthroscopic rotator cuff repair techniques.
METHODS: The transosseous-equivalent, single-row, triangle double-row, and suture-chain transosseous repair techniques were used to repair a full-thickness tear of the supraspinatus in 16 cadaveric shoulders. Continuous data points were collected immediately after repair and for 160 minutes at set time intervals by use of a custom thin film pressure sensor.
RESULTS: Each of the 4 rotator cuff repair techniques showed decreased contact force, p

A chronic cyst of the acromioclavicular joint was treated in 3 patients who were followed up for an average period of 26 months. All three were over 60 years old and presented with a massive rupture of the rotator cuff with a subnormal range of passive motion; active motion was variably affected and was painful. The patients underwent resection of one cm of the lateral end of the clavicle, together with resection of the cyst and synovectomy of the upper part of the pathologic humero-acromial joint; the coraco-acromial ligament was left in place. With a mean follow-up of 26 months, the 3 patien

CONTEXT: Subacromial impingement syndrome (SIS) is associated with scapular dyskinesis, or imbalanced scapular muscle activity. Evidence has shown that feedback can improve scapular control in patients with SIS. However, it is unknown whether real-time video feedback or electromyography (EMG) biofeedback is optimal for improving scapular kinematics and muscle activity during a functional task.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of video and EMG feedback sessions on absolute muscle activity (upper trapezius [UT], lower trapezius [LT], serratus anterior), muscle balance ratios (UT/LT, UT/serratu

BACKGROUND: The natural history of massive rotator cuff tears is not well known. The purpose of this study was to determine the clinical and structural mid-term outcomes in a series of nonoperatively managed massive rotator cuff tears.
METHODS: Nineteen consecutive patients (twelve men and seven women; average age, sixty-four years) with a massive rotator cuff tear, documented by magnetic resonance imaging, were identified retrospectively. There were six complete tears of two rotator cuff tendons and thirteen complete tears of three rotator cuff tendons. All patients were managed exclusively

BACKGROUND: Intra-articular corticosteroid injection in combination with rehabilitation is a prevalent treatment modality for moderate-to-severe shoulder stiffness. However, this approach frequently results in delayed and incomplete recovery. Conversely, arthroscopic capsular release is associated with inherent surgical risks. Manipulation under anaesthesia (MUA) presents a minimally invasive alternative; however, concerns regarding intravenous anaesthesia and iatrogenic rotator cuff injury have served to limit its adoption. This randomised controlled trial aimed to evaluate the hypothesis tha

HYPOTHESIS AND BACKGROUND: It is known that sex-based differences exist in the patient population undergoing rotator cuff repair surgery and that female patients have worse postoperative outcomes than their male counterparts, but it is unclear why this difference exists. The purpose of this study was to identify and characterize sex-based differences in preoperative evaluation, management, and disease burden in rotator cuff repair patients.
METHODS: This was a single-center retrospective and cross-sectional study of 100 patients (45 females, 55 males) enrolled preoperatively from January 2022

Adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder) may result from any injury to the shoulder. The main signs and symptoms are pain, decreased range of motion, and stiffness of the joint. A patient could have additional causes that can include muscle spasm, rotator cuff tear, or weakness of the upper extremities, which could make treatment decisions more complicated. Multiple therapeutic and surgical approaches exist. Successful outcomes for adhesive capsulitis are due to timely diagnosis and effective treatment options. In our case report, a 58-year-old female developed acute sharp pain in her shoulders,

PURPOSE: To assess the effect of a peritendinous leucocyte-poor platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection protocol on patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in treating chronic rotator cuff tendinopathy (CRCT) or partial-thickness rotator cuff tears (PTT).
METHODS: A single-centre retrospective case series of prospectively collected data was conducted. All patients diagnosed with CRCT or PTT undergoing peritendinous leucocyte-poor PRP injection were considered for eligibility. Inclusion criteria were: (1) active patients; (2) with proven CRCT or PTT of any rotator cuff tendon regardless of the
