Climate change in Ecuadorian undergraduate medical education programs: curricular assessment and the role of medical students' associations, 2019-2024.

BACKGROUND: Climate change (CC) poses an escalating threat to global public health. However, training for healthcare professionals on this subject remains insufficient. Medical Students’ Associations (MSAs) have taken independent initiatives to address this gap. In Ecuador, the extent of such efforts remains largely undocumented. This study aimed to examine the relationship between the integration of CC-related topics in Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) programs and student-led CC-related initiatives across Ecuadorian universities. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conduct

The chain mediating effect of friendship quality and learning engagement on school climate and primary school students' academic resilience.

Against the backdrop of rising focus to the study of academic resilience, there is still a dearth of relevant exploration for rural primary school students. Focusing on the influencing mechanisms of academic resilience in rural students not only helps children grow, but also contributes to narrowing the urban-rural education gap, thereby realizing educational equity. To explore the specific mechanism of school climate on the academic resilience of primary school students, this study investigated 316 primary school students in Gansu Province, China by using the school climate scale, the academi

A community-academic partnership to improve palliative care in post-acute and long-term care settings.

Palliative care in post-acute and long-term care (PALTC) settings is often inadequate due to limited access to trained clinicians, leaving seriously ill residents with unmet needs. We established a partnership between a national PALTC organization and an academic school of nursing to build the infrastructure for improving palliative care capacity. This paper describes the formation of a partnership and the initial efforts to lay the groundwork to improve palliative care delivery in PALTC settings. Guided by community-engaged research principles and an adapted comparative effectiveness research

Distressed or De-stressed? Crafting "Mental Health" in University Peer Education and Health Promotion.

In recent years, universities have demonstrated heightened recognition of and concern for students' mental health by expanding mental health services as well as campus-wide mental health promotion campaigns. This article examines peer education -- a growing initiative on American campuses in which students work with their institution to create and deliver health education and awareness campaigns to their peers. I present findings from an ethnographic study including 30 interviews with student peer health educators and their supervisory staff, participant observation among three university prog

Navigating through turbulence in the nursing talent pipeline: A constructivist grounded theory of academic success in polytechnic nursing education.

BACKGROUND: Academic success for nursing students has traditionally focused on metrics like grade point averages and exam performance but fails to reflect key abilities such as clinical reasoning, ethical decision-making, and the effective transfer of knowledge to practice. Additionally, there is a paucity of literature investigating academic success in undergraduate nursing education within polytechnic institutions, despite their growing role in nursing education. AIM: The objective of this study was to explore the processes and strategies undergraduate nursing students in Canadian polytechn

A Survey of DPT Students with Learning Disabilities in the State of Alabama.

AIMS: Up to 15% of U.S. higher education students have a learning disability (LD) such as ADHD, dyslexia, or dysgraphia, which impacts academic skill acquisition. Limited research exists on students with LDs in healthcare science programs, and their representation in Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs is unknown. This study aimed to explore the presence of students with LDs in Alabama DPT programs and to examine their perceptions of how their LDs impacted them and whether programs provided adequate accommodations. METHODS: A 12-item online survey was distributed to 326 students across

[Review and prospect of higher education of acupuncture-moxibustion classics in the past 40 years].

This paper systematically reviews the development trajectory of acupuncture-moxibustion classics in higher education over the past 40 years from a historical research perspective, employing literature analysis and comparative research methods to reveal the evolution patterns and underlying contradictions of textbook curricula. The construction of modern textbook curricula for acupuncture-moxibustion classics has gone through 3 stages: the initial stage of multiple explorations (1980-1987), the trial stage of path differentiation (1984-2002), and the integration and re-differentiation stage of

Training and Clinical Research Capacity Building in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Addressing Unmet Needs.

The Middle East, Mediterranean, and Africa (MEMA) region, encompassing 68 countries and 20% of the global population, contributes only 6% of the world's registered clinical trials. This editorial identifies eight key barriers to clinical research in the region: (1) limited collaboration with high-income country (HIC) universities supporting low-income country (LIC) research, (2) insufficient specialized training programs, (3) inadequate laboratory and technological infrastructure, (4) lack of research methodology integration in medical curricula, (5) underdeveloped local institutional review b

The relationship between academic stress and depressive symptoms in middle school students: a network analysis model.

OBJECTIVE: Based on network analysis methodology, a network model was constructed to elucidate the relationship between academic stress and depressive symptoms among middle school students. By identifying core nodes (high-strength symptoms) and bridge nodes (cross-group associated symptoms) within the two symptom clusters, the study reveals the interactive pathways between these constructs. This approach provides a foundation for precise mental health interventions tailored to middle school students. METHODS: A total of 1,576 middle school students in central Anhui Province were selected by th

Exploring allied health research capacity in Nigeria: a qualitative study of enablers and barriers.

BACKGROUND: Allied health professionals are integral to patient care, yet in low- and middle-income countries, their capacity to engage in research to improve the evidence base of their services remains underdeveloped. In Nigeria, most studies on research capacity are physician-focused with only limited empirical evidence for allied health cadres. This study explored the lived experiences, motivations, institutional enablers, and systemic barriers influencing research capacity among allied health professionals in a Nigerian tertiary hospital. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive study was undert

Promising antifungal agents: A minireview.

In the recent past, prevalence of life threatening fungal diseases have increased rapidly in immune-compromised cases such as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), cancer, organ transplant etc. Side by side, the appearance of drug resistance to the presently available antifungal therapeutics is on a rapid rise. It has become a top priority for the academia and pharmaceutical industries to develop new antifungal agents able to combat this resistance, and at the same time, possess potential broad spectrum of activity and minimum toxicity. An understanding of the pharmacological interactions…

Leuckart-Wallach Route Toward Isocyanides and Some Applications.

Isocyanide-based multicomponent reactions (IMCR) are among the most important chemical reactions to efficiently generate molecular diversity and have found widespread use in industry and academia. Generally, isocyanides are synthesized in 1-2 steps starting from primary amines. Here, we provide experimental detail on an alternative approach toward formamides and, thus, isocyanides via the Leuckart-Wallach reaction in an improved variation. The resulting >50 synthesized and characterized formamides are useful starting materials for IMCR, as well as other chemistries. The advantage of using the …

Imaging as a biomarker in drug discovery for Alzheimer's disease: is MRI a suitable technology?

This review provides perspectives on the utility of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a neuroimaging approach in the development of novel treatments for Alzheimer's disease. These considerations were generated in a roundtable at a recent Wellcome Trust meeting that included experts from academia and industry. It was agreed that MRI, either structural or functional, could be used as a diagnostic, for assessing worsening of disease status, for monitoring vascular pathology, and for stratifying clinical trial populations. It was agreed also that MRI implementation is in its infancy, requiring m…

Kinase targets in CNS drug discovery.

Originally thought to be nondruggable, kinases represent attractive drug targets for pharmaceutical companies and academia. To date, there are over 40 kinase inhibitors approved by the US FDA, with 32 of these being small molecules, in addition to the three mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitor macrolides (sirolimus, temsirolimus and everolimus). Despite the rapid development of kinase inhibitors for cancer, presently none of these agents are approved for CNS indications. This mini perspective highlights selected kinase targets for CNS disorders, of which brain-permeable small-molecule inhib…

The importance of high quality trials of cognitive interventions in Alzheimer's disease.

Currently available treatments for Alzheimer's disease (AD) are disappointing and their modest benefits do not reflect the increased understanding of the condition that has arisen from the last 50 years of research or the huge investments made by the pharmaceutical industry and academia in developing therapies. Cholinesterase inhibitors and memantine are evidence-based symptomatic treatments that offer benefits at the margins of clinical significance, but successive failures in trials of putative disease-modifying drugs have led researchers to investigate the potential efficacy of non-drug int…
