[Treatment of long-term radiation injuries in the urinary tract].

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy plays a substantial role in the treatment of malignancies. The side effects and long-term sequelae of radiotherapy are manifold and depend on the single doses and the total dosage, the time interval between two doses, the size of the irradiated tissue area and the radiation sensitivity of individual tissues. The urological complications following radiotherapy include inflammatory alterations of the bladder (radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis), fibrosis with subsequent radiogenic shrunken bladder, stenosis of the ureter and formation of secondary retroperitoneal fib

Strategies for Computed Tomography Radiation Dose Reduction in Pediatric Neuroimaging.

BACKGROUND: Radiation exposure from diagnostic imaging is a significant concern, particularly in the care of pediatric patients. Computed tomography (CT) scanning is a significant source of radiation. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate that diagnostic quality CT images can be obtained while minimizing the effective radiation dose to the patient. METHODS: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, noncontrast head CT scan data were reviewed, and indications for scans and estimated radiation dose delivered were recorded. The estimated effective radiation dose (EERD) for each CT protocol was reviewed.

[Radiation-protective agent and anti-aging agents: random and predictable matches.].

Radiation-protective and anti-aging properties are often combined. Combination of this properties is linked to the common mechanisms of action such as direct and indirect antioxidant activities, inhibition of free radicals formation, increase resistance to stress impacts at the cellular level, acceleration of DNA reparation, prevention of chronic diseases linked to abnormalities in regeneration processes, activation of immune inflammatory processes and carcinogenesis. Regulation of cell cycle and apoptosis can often be considered as an implementing driver of radiation-protective and anti-aging

The Effects of Ionizing Radiation on the Oral Cavity.

AIM: The aim of this study is to present a literature review on the effects of the ionizing radiation from radiotherapy treatment on dental tissues. BACKGROUND: Among the effects of increasing global life expectancy and longevity of the teeth in the oral cavity, increasing rates of neoplastic diseases have been observed. One of the important treatment modalities for head and neck neoplastic diseases is radiotherapy, which uses ionizing radiation as the main mechanism of action. Therefore, it is essential for dentists to be aware of the changes in oral and dental tissues caused by ionizing rad

Adjuvant radiation therapy for stage II thymoma.

BACKGROUND: Thymoma is difficult to study because of its indolent natural history. The criteria for administration of adjuvant radiation therapy remain controversial, and it is unclear whether patients with Masaoka stage II thymoma benefit from adjuvant radiation. The goal of this report was to determine whether or not this group benefits from radiation therapy in terms of disease-specific survival and tumor recurrence. METHODS: Case records of the Massachusetts General Hospital were retrospectively reviewed from 1972 to 1999. One hundred fifty-five patients underwent resection for thymoma, o

Identifying predictive hematological biomarkers for radiation exposure by machine learning in mouse models.

BACKGROUND: Population-scale radiation exposure assessment during radiological emergencies is hindered by the slow and costly nature of current methods, creating a need for rapid, affordable screening tools. Radiation biodosimetry using peripheral blood counts is a promising approach, but estimating low-dose exposures and exposure at extended time points remains challenging, especially when accounting for inter-individual differences in radiation sensitivity. METHODS: We analyze complete blood count (CBC) profiles from a retrospective cohort of 1151 male and female BALB/cJ and C57BL/6 J mice

Unlocking the Potential of Ultra-High Dose Fractionated Radiation for Effective Treatment of Glioblastoma in Mice.

Background: Current radiotherapy regimens for glioblastoma (GBM) have limited efficacy and fails to eradicate tumors. Regenerative medicine brings hope for repairing damaged tissue, opening opportunities for elevating the maximum acceptable radiation dose. In this study, we explored the effect of ultra-high dose fractionated radiation on tumor responses and brain injury in immunocompetent mice which can better mimic the tumor-host interactions observed in patients. We also evaluated the role of the hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha under radiation as potential target for combating radiation-ind

Are Indian orthopaedic surgeons aware of the health hazards of radiation exposure? A survey and review on awareness and ways to mitigate them.

BACKGROUND: Standardized education on the short and long-term health hazards of radiation and thus the awareness regarding current radiation exposure limits is restricted in the field of orthopaedics. There is a lack of awareness regarding the risks related to radiation exposure amongst orthopaedic surgeons and therefore the recommended safety precautions to assess and mitigate these potential risks should be emphasized. Orthopaedic surgeons should adopt the ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) principle. All precautions should be taken to keep all members of the operation room safe from ra

Treating infections with ionizing radiation: a historical perspective and emerging techniques.

BACKGROUND: Widespread use and misuse of antibiotics have led to a dramatic increase in the emergence of antibiotic resistant bacteria, while the discovery and development of new antibiotics is declining. This has made certain implant-associated infections such as periprosthetic joint infections, where a biofilm is formed, very difficult to treat. Alternative treatment modalities are needed to treat these types of infections in the future. One candidate that has been used extensively in the past, is the use of ionizing radiation. This review aims to provide a historical overview and future per

NSAIDs diclofenac, indomethacin, and meloxicam highly upregulate expression of ICAM-1 and COX-2 induced by X-irradiation in human endothelial cells.

BACKGROUND: It is well known that radiation exposure to the heart and the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) increase the risk of myocardial infarction (MI). Some NSAIDs are also known to act synergistically with ionizing radiation and have radio-sensitizing effects in radiotherapy. These evidences suggest that NSAIDs may affect the risk of MI after radiation exposure to the heart. In the present study, we investigated effects of NSAIDs on radiation-induced expression of cell adhesion molecules and COX-2, which are associated with inflammation and an increased risk of MI, in

NEO-HYPORT: does neoadjuvant radiotherapy improve breast cancer outcomes? An open label, randomised, parallel group, superiority trial to compare the disease-free survival following neoadjuvant versus adjuvant hypofractionated radiotherapy in breast cancer (NEO-HYPORT).

BACKGROUND: In the setting of curative treatment of breast carcinoma, radiotherapy is usually administered after surgery (adjuvant radiotherapy). We intend to evaluate the impact of delivering radiation therapy prior to surgical intervention in the treatment of these patients. METHODS: The NEO-HYPORT trial is designed as a randomised, controlled, parallel group, open-label, single-centre, superiority trial comparing neoadjuvant and adjuvant radiotherapy after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The primary endpoint is 3-year disease-free survival. A secondary randomisation will evaluate two hypofractio

Reducing Radiation Dose in Computed Tomography Imaging of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Using Spectral Shaping Technique with Tin Filter.

Background/Objectives: Children with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) require repeated imaging, primarily standing spine radiography, while CT may be required for surgical planning, resulting in higher radiation exposure. Spectral shaping using a tin filter can reduce radiation dose in non-contrast chest CT. This study evaluated the efficacy of spectral shaping using a tin filter for reducing radiation dose in CT imaging in AIS and its impact on image quality. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 51 AIS patients who underwent spine CT between February 2017 and March 2022, and divided them

Are IMRT treatments in the head and neck region increasing the risk of secondary cancers?

BACKGROUND: Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) has been increasingly employed for treating head and neck (H&N) tumours due to its ability to produce isodoses suitable for the complex anatomy of the region. The aim of this study was to assess possible differences between IMRT and conformal radiation therapy (CRT) with regard to risk of radiation-induced secondary malignancies for H&N tumours. MATERIAL AND METHODS: IMRT and CRT plans were made for 10 H&N adult patients and the resulting treatment planning data were used to calculate the risk of radiation-induced malignancies in four d

Radiation Vasculopathy.

BACKGROUND: Cerebrovascular radiation-related vasculopathies can involve vessels of all sizes. Of these, extracranial carotid and vertebral artery (VA) radiation-induced atherosclerosis are the most commonly encountered radiation vasculopathy in Asia. This is because of the high incidence of oro-nasopharyngeal cancers in this region, where radiation therapy (RT) is the mainstay treatment. SUMMARY: Radiation exposure induces the early and rapid development of atherosclerosis in the extracranial arteries. In retrospective studies, significant changes were demonstrated as early as 1 year after R
