Developmental changes in renal artery blood flow velocity during the first three weeks of life in preterm neonates.

Changes in color Doppler imaging measurements of renal artery blood flow velocity have been reported previously during fetal life and during the first week postnatally in term and preterm infants. This study reports longitudinal, developmental changes in renal artery and aortic blood flow velocities occurring postnatally, from birth to day 1 of life, at 1 week, and at 2 to 3 weeks of age in 14 premature babies (mean gestation, 30 +/- 4 (SD) weeks; birth weight, 1.45 +/- 0.57 kg), and identified by means of color Doppler imaging and pulsed Doppler spectral analysis. Results indicate that a sign…

Systolic or diastolic notch in uterine artery blood flow velocity waveforms in hypertensive pregnant patients: relationship to outcome.

To identify the relationship between a systolic or diastolic notch in uterine artery flow velocity waveforms and pregnancy outcome, we studied 140 hypertensive pregnant women with transvaginal, image-directed pulsed Doppler ultrasound. The subjects were classified according to the presence or absence of a systolic or diastolic notch. In 14 with a systolic and 25 with a diastolic notch, the resistance indexes in the uterine arteries on both sides of the uterus were significantly higher than in 101 subjects without a notch. Those with notches had significantly higher rates of fetal growth retard

Effects of blood-flow velocity and direction on coagulation zone symmetry induced by microwave ablation using ECO antenna.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Microwave ablation is a well-established therapy for liver tumors, but its efficacy is strongly influenced by blood perfusion. Most computational studies simplify perfusion as an isotropic sink, neglecting flow orientation. This work introduces the Antenna-Blood flow Relative Angle (ABRA) to quantify the effects of flow direction and velocity on ablation zone geometry using a commercial ECO Ceramic 14 G antenna. METHODS: Ex vivo bovine liver experiments were performed under standardized conditions and used to calibrate and validate a computational model. The antenna

Prenatal Diagnosis of Abnormal Invasive Placenta by Ultrasound: Measurement of Highest Peak Systolic Velocity of Subplacental Blood Flow.

The aim of the study described here was to identify an efficient criterion for the prenatal diagnosis of abnormal invasive placenta. We evaluated 129 women with anterior placenta previa who underwent trans-abdominal ultrasound evaluation in the third trimester. Spectral Doppler ultrasonography was performed to assess the subplacental blood flow of the anterior lower uterine segment by measuring the highest peak systolic velocity and resistive index. These patients were prospectively followed until delivery and evaluated for abnormal placental invasion. The peak systolic velocity and resistive

Effect of dexmedetomidine on cerebral blood flow velocity, cerebral metabolic rate, and carbon dioxide response in normal humans.

BACKGROUND: Dexmedetomidine reduces cerebral blood flow (CBF) in humans and animals. In animal investigations, cerebral metabolic rate (CMR) was unchanged. Therefore, the authors hypothesized that dexmedetomidine would cause a decrease in the CBF/CMR ratio with even further reduction by superimposed hyperventilation. This reduction might be deleterious in patients with neurologic injuries. METHODS: Middle cerebral artery velocity (CBFV) was recorded continuously in six volunteers. CBFV, jugular bulb venous saturation (Sjvo2), CMR equivalent (CMRe), and CBFV/CMRe ratio were determined at six i

Estimating normal and pathological dynamic responses in cerebral blood flow velocity to step changes in end-tidal pCO2.

The regulation of cerebral blood flow (CBF) following changes in arterial blood pressure (ABP) and end-tidal pCO2 (EtCO2) are of clinical interest in assessing cerebrovascular reserve capacity. Linear finite-impulse-response modelling is applied to ABP, EtCO2 and CBF velocity (CBFV, from transcranial Doppler measurements), which allows the CBFV response to ideal step changes in EtCO2 to be estimated from clinical data showing more sluggish, and additional random variations. The confounding effects of ABP changes provoked by hypercapnia on the CBFV are also corrected for. Data from 56 patients

Cerebral blood flow velocity changes in preterm infants after a single dose of indomethacin: duration of its effect.

Indomethacin decreases cerebral blood flow velocity and blood flow in the preterm infant. The duration of this negative effect has not been established. Cerebral blood flow velocity was evaluated in 24 preterm infants with symptomatic patent ductus arteriosus before and during the first 12 hours after a single intravenous dose of indomethacin, 0.1 mg/kg. Cerebral blood flow velocity was estimated by serial Doppler investigations of the anterior cerebral arteries. Indomethacin administration led to an instantaneous decrease of peak systolic flow velocity, temporal mean flow velocity, and end-di…

Circle of Willis blood velocity and flow direction after common carotid artery ligation for neonatal extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

The velocity and direction of blood flow in the circle of Willis arteries were measured in three infants who underwent right common carotid artery ligation for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation treatment. Within 15 minutes of common carotid artery ligation, blood flow was detected in one infant's right middle cerebral artery; however, the velocity was reduced to 50% of the preextracorporeal membrane oxygenation level. The velocity remained 50% to 70% lower than normal during the 88 hours of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation therapy. In the other two infants, the velocity changes were less

Quantitative measurements of blood flow velocity in basal cerebral arteries with transcranial duplex color-flow imaging. A comparative study with conventional transcranial Doppler sonography.

Transcranial duplex color-flow imaging is a new diagnostic method that allows visual display of blood flow in the basal cerebral arteries. This method allows determination of and correction for the Doppler angle of insonation. Conventional transcranial Doppler sonography has no imaging component and assumes a 0-degree Doppler angle for the calculation of flow velocities. The magnitude of the angle of insonation and the effect on flow velocity estimates have not been clearly defined. In order to evaluate the angle of insonation and the effect of angle correction on velocity readings, 50 patient

Heat-related changes in the velocity and kinetic energy of flowing blood influence the human heart's output during hyperthermia.

Passive whole-body hyperthermia increases limb blood flow and cardiac output ( Q ̇ $\dot Q$ ), but the interplay between peripheral and central thermo-haemodynamic mechanisms remains unclear. Here we tested the hypothesis that local hyperthermia-induced alterations in peripheral blood flow and blood kinetic energy modulate flow to the heart and Q ̇ $\dot Q$ . Body temperatures, regional (leg, arm, head) and systemic haemodynamics, and left ventricular (LV) volumes and functions were assessed in eight healthy males during: (1) 3 h control (normothermic condition); (2) 3 h of single-leg heat

Experimental carotid baroreceptor stimulation reduces blood flow velocities in the anterior and middle cerebral arteries of healthy individuals.

This study investigated effects of experimental baroreceptor stimulation on bilateral blood flow velocities in the anterior and middle cerebral arteries (ACA and MCA) using functional transcranial Doppler sonography. Carotid baroreceptors were stimulated by neck suction in 33 healthy participants. Therefore, negative pressure (- 50 mmHg) was applied; neck pressure (+ 10 mmHg) was used as a control condition. Heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) were also continuously recorded. Neck suction led to reductions in bilateral ACA and MCA blood flow velocities, which accompanied the expected HR an
