Tuberculin sensitivity of cattle inoculated with atypical mycobacteria isolated from cattle, feral pigs and trought water.

Each of 12 cattle was inoculated either subcutaneously and intradermally or into a mesenteric lymph node with 1 of 8 species of liver atypical mycobacteria isolated from cattle, cattle trough water and feral pigs. Seventy-eight days after inoculation the cattle were tuberculin tested with bovine PPD, avian PPD and homologous heat-concentrated syntheic medium tuberculins. They were killed 85 days after inoculation. Organisms were cultured from caseous granulomas at all sites in cattle inoculated with M. avium serotype 2. M. simiae was recovered from a granuloma at the subcutaneous site. Acid-fa…

Moxidectin: systemic activity against common cattle grubs (Hypoderma lineatum) (Diptera: Oestridae) and trichostrongyle nematodes in cattle.

Moxidectin, a systemic insecticide, was evaluated for its efficacy against the migrating first instars of the common cattle grub, Hypoderma lineatum, and against nematode egg production in beef cattle. It was observed that all three levels (0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 mg moxidectin kg-1) were 100% effective against cattle grubs when administered as a s.c. injection. The same levels of treatment were very effective (90-100%) in reducing trichostrongyle nematode egg production. However, there was a slight indication that at least one species, Cooperia oncophora, was not completely eliminated, as it was obs…

Antemortem Cardiac Diagnostic Approaches in Cattle.

This article discusses the diagnosis of bovine cardiac disease, which is often identified only after congestive heart failure signs appear, leading to poor outcomes. Key clinical signs include tachycardia, abnormal heart sounds, jugular distention, and edema, with auscultation being vital in field settings. Diagnostic tools such as echocardiography, radiography, pulmonary artery pressure measurement, and serology are essential but require expertise. Echocardiography can detect congenital defects like ventricular septal defects, while pulmonary hypertension assessment and radiographs help evalu

Non-respiratory Diseases of Stocker Cattle.

Non respiratory diseases impact stocker cattle health and performance. Frothy bloat arises from high-protein forages and microbial shifts causing stable foam that blocks eructation; mitigation includes lower-risk forages, graze management, and continuous nonionic surfactants such as poloxalene. Interdigital necrobacillosis (foot rot) is a polymicrobial interdigital infection; breach of skin allows bacteria to cause cellulitis, septic arthritis, and lameness; therapy hinges on antibiotics, with prevention centered on environmental hygiene and possibly Fusobacterium necrophorum vaccination. Cocc…

Mycoplasma bovis mastitis in dairy cattle.

Mycoplasma bovis has recently been identified increasingly in dairy cows causing huge economic losses to the dairy industry. M. bovis is a causative agent for mastitis, pneumonia, endometritis, endocarditis, arthritis, otitis media, and many other clinical symptoms in cattle. However, some infected cows are asymptomatic or may not shed the pathogen for weeks to years. This characteristic of M. bovis, along with the lack of adequate testing and identification methods in many parts of the world until recently, has allowed the M. bovis to be largely undetected despite its increased prevalence in …

Mineral status of California beef cattle.

Optimal mineral nutrition is required for cattle reproduction, immune function, and structural development. Formal evaluation of the current mineral status of California beef cattle is currently lacking. In 2017, a survey was initiated that evaluated a panel of 10 different minerals in 14 counties across California. Samples were collected from 555 cattle at 50 different ranches. Region of the state significantly affected herd mineral status. Herd use of supplements was also significant, and increased most blood levels of the mineral(s) targeted for supplementation. Forage source was idiosyncra…

Brucella-associated cervical bursitis in cattle.

Bovine brucellosis poses a risk to human health and causes serious economic losses for the animal industry. This report describes the use of different diagnostic methods for the diagnosis of brucellosis in cattle affected by cervical bursitis from a slaughterhouse located in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil. Serum samples from a total of 47 cattle with bursitis were collected and submitted to the Rose Bengal Test (RBT), and RBT-positive samples were further confirmed by the 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME) assay. RBT indicated 85.1% (40/47) of positive samples, from which 78.7% (37/47) were confirmed by 2-M…

Highly divergent hepaciviruses from African cattle.

UNLABELLED: The hepatitis C virus (HCV; genus Hepacivirus) is a highly relevant human pathogen. Unique hepaciviruses (HV) were discovered recently in animal hosts. The direct ancestor of HCV has not been found, but the genetically most closely related animal HVs exist in horses. To investigate whether other peridomestic animals also carry HVs, we analyzed sera from Ghanaian cattle for HVs by reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR). Nine of 106 specimens from different sampling sites contained HV RNA (8.5%) at median viral loads of 1.6 × 10(5) copies/ml. Infection seemed unrelated to cattle age and …

Experimental soybean meal intoxication in cattle.

BACKGROUND: Cattle are commonly fed soybean meal (SBM) and accidental intoxication sometimes occurs. OBJECTIVES: To describe the biologic and clinical features of SBM intoxication. ANIMALS: Four steers with ruminal cannula. METHODS: Controlled experimental trial. SBM was administered once at 1 and 2% of body weight (BW) via cannula at 2-month intervals. RESULTS: This study showed a 2-phase pathogenic course for 2% BW SBM intoxication. The 1st phase (until 10 hours post-administration) is restricted to ruminal modification with volatile fatty acid overproduction and moderate ruminal ammonia…

Production of cattle lacking prion protein.

Prion diseases are caused by propagation of misfolded forms of the normal cellular prion protein PrP(C), such as PrP(BSE) in bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle and PrP(CJD) in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in humans. Disruption of PrP(C) expression in mice, a species that does not naturally contract prion diseases, results in no apparent developmental abnormalities. However, the impact of ablating PrP(C) function in natural host species of prion diseases is unknown. Here we report the generation and characterization of PrP(C)-deficient cattle produced by a sequential gene-targe…

Agro-economic impact of cattle cloning.

The purpose of this paper is to review the economic and social implications of cloned cattle, their products, and their offspring as related to production agriculture. Cloning technology in cattle has several applications outside of traditional production agriculture. These applications can include bio-medical applications, such as the production of pharmaceuticals in the blood or milk of transgenic cattle. Cloning may also be useful in the production of research models. These models may or may not include genetic modifications. Uses in agriculture include many applications of the technology. …

Maxillary sinus cysts in two cattle.

Two adult Holstein cattle were found to have unilateral maxillary sinus cysts. One had dyspnea and partial airway obstruction; the other had a swelling over the sinus. Both had a nonfetid, mucoid nasal discharge. Deviation of the nasal septum away from the cyst, soft-tissue opacity involving the left maxillary sinus, and a gas-capped fluid line on lateral projection were identified radiographically. The cyst fluid did not have an odor, was relatively acellular, and was of a mucoid (animal 1) or gelatinous (animal 2) nature. In 1 animal, the cyst wall and fluid were removed through a dorsolater…

Suspected monensin toxicosis in feedlot cattle.

Suspected monensin toxicosis was seen in feedlot cattle aged 6 to 9 months. Twenty cattle died following inclusion of monensin in the feed at 400g/tonne, which was 13 times the recommended level. The deaths occurred over 2 weeks. Clinical signs were inappetance, respiratory distress and sudden death. Post-mortem features were those of right-sided heart failure and included dependent subcutaneous oedema, ascites, hydrothorax, and periancinar hepatocyte congestion and necrosis. However, in contrast to previous reports no myocardial necrosis was found, but focal skeletal muscle necrosis was obser…

Phlebectatic peliosis hepatis in Australian cattle.

Peliosis hepatis can be produced predictably in cattle following regular oral dosing for several weeks with dried plant of various Pimelea spp which contain irritant diterpenoid daphnane esters such as simplexin . The condition is associated with a massive hypervolemia and cor pulmonale. Affected animals may recover after removal of the toxin from the diet. The mechanism of peliosis hepatis in man and other species is obscure, and the present model in the large domestic species could well be employed in investigations of the pathogenesis of this lesion. The condition appears to have its origin…

Bacterial endocarditis in adult dairy cattle.

Thirty-one cases of bacterial endocarditis in adult dairy cows were reviewed. Clinical signs were reflective of the stage of the disease. Recurrent or persistent fever, tachycardia and a pounding heartbeat or systolic murmur, polypnea, and lameness were typical. With chronicity, weight loss and poor production developed. The end stage was congestive heart failure. Neutrophilia was typical in early cases. Low-grade anemia and high total serum globulin content developed with chronicity and seemed to be negative prognostic signs. Corynebacterium pyogenes was the organism most frequently identifie
