Cortical basis of communication: local computation, coordination, attention.

Human communication emerges from cortical processing, known to be implemented on a regular repetitive neuronal substratum. The supposed genericity of cortical processing has elicited a series of modeling works in computational neuroscience that underline the information flows driven by the cortical circuitry. In the minimalist framework underlying the current theories for the embodiment of cognition, such a generic cortical processing is exploited for the coordination of poles of representation, as is reported in this paper for the case of visual attention. Interestingly, this case emphasizes

Learning brain dynamics across distinct scaling regimes reveals psychiatric signatures.

Understanding how the brain's nonlinear dynamics give rise to cognition remains a central challenge in neuroscience. Conventional neuroimaging methods assume linearity and stationarity, failing to capture frequency-specific neural computations. We introduce Multi-Band Brain Net (MBBN), a transformer-based framework that models frequency-specific spatiotemporal brain dynamics from fMRI. MBBN integrates biologically grounded frequency decomposition with multi-band self-attention, enabling discovery of frequency-dependent network interactions. Trained on 49,673 individuals across three large-scal

Bayesian deconvolution for computational cognitive modeling of fMRI data.

A central goal of cognitive neuroscience is to make inferences about underlying cognitive processes from observable data. However, current fMRI analysis tools cannot directly estimate latent parameters in computational cognitive models from blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal. Here, we present a novel Bayesian deconvolution technique for full hierarchical generative cognitive modeling of fMRI timeseries data. We validated this approach by applying Bayesian deconvolution to the monetary incentive delay (MID) task to identify processes underlying incentive anticipation in a sample of 54 i

Linking visual-frontoparietal network neural dynamics to spontaneous cognitive processing.

Previous studies in neuroscience have predominantly focused on the role of the default mode network (DMN) in spontaneous thought, with the contributions of other brain regions remaining largely unexplored. In this study, we hypothesized that the visual-frontoparietal network (VFPN) would exhibit distinct macroscopic patterns associated with spontaneous cognitive processing. To test this hypothesis, we analyzed four functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) datasets. Our results revealed that self-reported cognitive states during rest were strongly correlated with specific macroscopic patter

Functional connectivity between left rostral anterior cingulate cortex and left caudate nucleus: Linking future self-continuity to achievement motivation.

Future self-continuity (FSC) and achievement motivation are two psychological constructs that facilitate future-oriented cognition and goal-directed behavior. However, the neural circuits integrating these constructs remain understudied from a cognitive neuroscience perspective-specifically how self-referential processing (a core component of FSC) interacts with reward valuation supported by the caudate. To address this question, we explored the relationship between future self-continuity and achievement motivation using a combination of resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) and mediati

Cellular mechanisms of serotonergic psychedelics - apical hypercontextualisation.

Classical serotonergic psychedelics primarily exert their profound effects through agonism at the serotonin 2A (5-HT2A) receptor, which is abundantly expressed in many cortical regions, particularly in layer V pyramidal neurons of associative and visual areas. At the cellular level, these receptors are predominantly localized postsynaptically on the soma and apical dendrites. This review synthesizes evidence from distinct subfields of psychedelic cognitive neuroscience to illuminate how 5-HT2A agonism at apical dendrites of layer V pyramidal neurons disrupts the usual boundaries of conscious m

Food for thought: hedonic experience beyond homeostasis in the human brain.

Food intake is an essential human activity regulated by homeostatic and hedonic systems in the brain which has mostly been ignored by the cognitive neurosciences. Yet, the study of food intake integrates fundamental cognitive and emotional processes in the human brain, and can in particular provide evidence on the neural correlates of the hedonic experience central to guiding behaviour. Neuroimaging experiments provide a novel basis for the further exploration of the brain systems involved in the conscious experience of pleasure and reward, and thus provide a unique method for studying the hed

From Broca and Wernicke to the Neuromodulation Era: Insights of Brain Language Networks for Neurorehabilitation.

Communication in humans activates almost every part of the brain. Of course, the use of language predominates, but other cognitive functions such as attention, memory, emotion, and executive processes are also involved. However, in order to explain how our brain "understands," "speaks," and "writes," and in order to rehabilitate aphasic disorders, neuroscience has faced the challenge for years to reveal the responsible neural networks. Broca and Wernicke (and Lichtheim and many others), during the 19th century, when brain research was mainly observational and autopsy driven, offered fundamenta

Effects of motor activity versus cognitive demand on asymmetries in EEG frequency bands and their relation to handedness.

INTRODUCTION: Electroencephalography (EEG) is commonly used in neuroscience to study cognitive and emotional processes, often showing functional lateralization. Alpha asymmetries are frequently interpreted as a reverse marker of functional asymmetries in cognitive activation. However, the role of motor activity versus cognitive demands in driving EEG asymmetries remains unclear. METHODS: To explore this, we analyzed resting-state and task-based EEG asymmetry from 610 healthy adults (ages 20-70) from the Dortmund Vital Study (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT05155397). Participants completed three tasks

Facilitation of working memory capacity by transcranial direct current stimulation: a secondary analysis from the augmenting cognitive training in older adults (ACT) study.

Aging is a public health concern with an ever-increasing magnitude worldwide. An array of neuroscience-based approaches like transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and cognitive training have garnered attention in the last decades to ameliorate the effects of cognitive aging in older adults. This study evaluated the effects of 3 months of bilateral tDCS over the frontal cortices with multimodal cognitive training on working memory capacity. Two hundred ninety-two older adults without dementia were allocated to active or sham tDCS paired with cognitive training. These participants recei

Event cache: An independent component in working memory.

Working memory (WM) has been a major focus of cognitive science and neuroscience for the past 50 years. While most WM research has centered on the mechanisms of objects, there has been a lack of investigation into the cognitive and neural mechanisms of events, which are the building blocks of our experience. Using confirmatory factor analysis, psychophysical experiments, and resting-state and task functional magnetic resonance imaging methods, our study demonstrated that events have an independent storage space within WM, named as event cache, with distinct neural correlates compared to object

Parkinson's disease dementia: a neural networks perspective.

In the long-term, with progression of the illness, Parkinson's disease dementia affects up to 90% of patients with Parkinson's disease. With increasing life expectancy in western countries, Parkinson's disease dementia is set to become even more prevalent in the future. However, current treatments only give modest symptomatic benefit at best. New treatments are slow in development because unlike the pathological processes underlying the motor deficits of Parkinson's disease, the neural mechanisms underlying the dementing process and its associated cognitive deficits are still poorly understood

Biobehavioral markers of adverse effect in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Identification of children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) is difficult because information regarding prenatal exposure is often lacking, a large proportion of affected children do not exhibit facial anomalies, and no distinctive behavioral phenotype has been identified. Castellanos and Tannock have advocated going beyond descriptive symptom-based approaches to diagnosis to identify biomarkers derived from cognitive neuroscience. Classical eyeblink conditioning and magnitude comparison are particularly promising biobehavioral markers of FASD-eyeblink conditioning because a deficit

Lateral prefrontal damage affects processing selection but not attention switching.

A challenge for cognitive neuroscience is to determine how the prefrontal cortex (PFC) contributes to the cognitive control operations that oversee thought and action. We studied the effects of damage to the lateral PFC in two types of attentional control. Subjects performed a choice reaction time task that required attention switching and processing selection. The performance of individuals with PFC or parietal cortex damage was compared with that of age-matched and young control subjects. Damage to the lateral PFC did not significantly impair the switch from attending to one color to attendi

Depressive symptoms are linked to age-specific neuroanatomical and cognitive variations.

Depression is a heterogeneous disorder, both in terms of patient symptomatology and in patient sociodemographic factors. Here, we examine the contribution of age to this heterogeneity, by characterizing the associations of depressive symptoms with cognitive performance and brain structure across the lifespan. We analyzed data from the Cambridge Centre for Aging Neuroscience (Cam-CAN) cohort (N = 2591, age 18-99). A subset of this cohort (N = 647) underwent structural MRI. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Cognitive assessments were performed usi

Cognitive impairment associated with cerebellar volume loss in spinocerebellar ataxia type 3.

BACKGROUND: Many neuroscience and neurology studies have forced a reconsideration of the traditional motor-related scope of cerebellar function, which has now expanded to include various cognitive functions. Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3; the most common hereditary ataxia) is neuropathologically characterized by cerebellar atrophy and frequently presents with cognitive impairment. OBJECTIVE: To characterize cognitive impairment in SCA3 and investigate the cerebellum-cognition associations. METHODS: This prospective, cross-sectional cohort study recruited 126 SCA3 patients and 41 health
