Collagens are the most abundant proteins in the body and comprise the basement membranes and stroma through which cancerous invasion occurs; however, a pro-neoplastic function for mutant collagens is undefined. Here we identify COL11A1 mutations in 66 of 100 cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (cSCCs), the second most common U.S. cancer, concentrated in a triple helical region known to produce trans-dominant collagens. BACKGROUND: Since the late 1990s corneal crosslinking (CXL) has been proposed as a new treatment option which can stop progression of keratoconus with promising results in adults.
OBJECTIVE: Keratoconus presents a higher rate and faster progression in paediatric patients and for this reason prompt and effective treatment is essential. A collagen membrane with microscopic order is presented. The membranes were produced with acid-soluble collagen, using two different methods to obtain orientation. The product was characterized by mean of UV and IR spectra, scanning electronic microscopy, optical microscopy and laser diffractometry. The results clearly show a high level of order in the membranes obtained by both techniques. Permeability for rifamycin, ascorbic acid and NaCl was also measured. Due to the characteristics of the membranes, they have a potential application for treatment of surface injuries.

The treatment of high anal fistulae carries a high risk of failure. This case presents a 41-year-old male with a high trans-sphincteric anal fistula. The fistula was treated with a newly introduced biodegradable collagen plug. The plug resulted in rapid healing of the fistula. Six weeks later, superficial retention of the fistula required incision of the external fistula opening. After this, further healing was uneventful and at the four-month follow-up the fistula remained healed.
