[European Code against Cancer: 12 ways to reduce your cancer risk].

Recently, the Word Health Organization/International Agency for Research on Cancer published the 4th edition of European Code against Cancer with 12 personal advices on how to diminish the risk of development of cancer. A proportion of advices refers to risk factors which are connected to our everyday lifestyle; another admonishes to comply with the services offered by the health care system. In Hungary, the European Code has not received adequate publicity so far. As common risk factors play a major role in the development of chronic non-communicable diseases, the advice may contribute to the

Self-care behaviours and trajectory management by people with scleroderma in northeastern Thailand.

Scleroderma, particularly systemic sclerosis, is a chronic illness that affects a person's physical, emotional, psychosocial, and spiritual dimensions. To investigate self-care deficits, health behaviours, and trajectory management of Thai people with systemic sclerosis, an exploratory case study method was used through interviews and patient records. Self-care deficit nursing theory and the chronic illness trajectory framework guided the research. Twelve patients with systemic sclerosis were purposively recruited at a hospital clinic in the northeastern region of Thailand. Thai people living

Debate: Is ACE screening doing more harm than good? A consideration of screening versus child health surveillance.

The ACEs questionnaire has been used in population epidemiology for decades and is now recommended, by some authors, for screening purposes. However, screening programmes bring both harms and benefits and are different from population epidemiology and clinical enquiry. In this paper, I use a modern modification of Wilson and Jungner's screening programme criteria to consider whether a screening programme for ACEs would be advisable. I conclude that a screening programme for ACEs would not be appropriate and might be harmful. However, routine child health surveillance, with close collaboration

Using public health scenarios to predict the utility of a national syndromic surveillance programme during the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

During 2012 real-time syndromic surveillance formed a key part of the daily public health surveillance for the London Olympic and Paralympic Games. It was vital that these systems were evaluated prior to the Games; in particular what types and scales of incidents could and could not be detected. Different public health scenarios were created covering a range of potential incidents that the Health Protection Agency would require syndromic surveillance to rapidly detect and monitor. For the scenarios considered it is now possible to determine what is likely to be detectable and how incidents are

Justice or Injustice: a History and Critique of the New York State Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs.

The creation of the New York State Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs ("Justice Center") was announced with great fanfare in 2013. Its goal is laudable: strengthening and standardizing "the safety net for vulnerable persons, adults and children alike, who are receiving care from New York's human service agencies and programs." Its jurisdiction is broad: covering residential and non-residential programs and provider agencies that come within the purview of six state oversight agencies, namely, the Office of Mental Health, the Office for People with Developmental Disa

Large concomitant outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis emergency visits in adults and food-borne events suspected to be linked to raw shellfish, France, December 2019 to January 2020.

On 27 December 2019, the French Public Health Agency identified a large increase in the number of acute gastroenteritis and vomiting visits, both in emergency departments and in emergency general practitioners' associations providing house-calls. In parallel, on 26 and 27 December, an unusual number of food-borne events suspected to be linked to the consumption of raw shellfish were reported through the mandatory reporting surveillance system. This paper describes these concomitant outbreaks and the investigations' results.

Ebola in West Africa--CDC's Role in Epidemic Detection, Control, and Prevention.

Since Ebola virus disease was identified in West Africa on March 23, 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has undertaken the most intensive response in the agency's history; >3,000 staff have been involved, including >1,200 deployed to West Africa for >50,000 person workdays. Efforts have included supporting incident management systems in affected countries; mobilizing partners; and strengthening laboratory, epidemiology, contact investigation, health care infection control, communication, and border screening in West Africa, Nigeria, Mali, Senegal, and the United States.

Collaborative approaches to masking: statewide threshold development and performance across three respiratory seasons.

OBJECTIVE: Transmission of respiratory illnesses in health care settings poses significant risks to patients and staff. Without clear, standardized masking thresholds, policies may vary, resulting in confusion. We developed statewide consensus thresholds to guide masking in Minnesota health care systems over three respiratory seasons. METHODS: A multidisciplinary workgroup consisting of infection preventionists, infectious disease providers, occupational health specialists, and representatives from the state health department reviewed available data, including hospitalization rates, influenza

Understanding the Reach and Impact of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Women's Health Research, 2018-2023.

Understanding the public health impact of women's health research is crucial for improving health outcomes and guiding future research priorities. Bibliometric analysis offers a unique suite of tools to identify opportunities to increase impact and measure the dissemination of women's health research. Using 2018-2021 mortality data from the National Vital Statistics System, we utilized age-adjusted death rates to identify conditions with the highest relative mortality risk for females versus males. Our analysis showed that breast cancer, Alzheimer's disease, infections of the kidney, and acute

Exploring what works well and less well in a community-based drop-in hub providing health and wellbeing services for people experiencing homelessness: a participatory action evaluation of service coordination.

BACKGROUND: People experiencing homelessness often face obstacles accessing health and social care support. Challenges are further exacerbated when support provision for multiple unmet needs are not integrated or coordinated. To overcome these challenges, there has been growing attention on integrating and co-locating health and wellbeing services for people experiencing homelessness. In an urban area of North East England, a long-standing Hub or 'drop-in centre' offers a range of health and wellbeing support by bringing together the different health and care system agencies in one space. Council tenancies and hoarding behaviours: A study with a large social landlord in England.

Hoarding behaviours are highly stigmatised and often hidden. People with problematic hoarding behaviours have a higher rate of mental health and other healthcare and social services utilisation. Hoarding is a community health problem, one factor being housing insecurity. Hoarding behaviours represent significant burden to housing providers, impact the community and dealing with it involves multiple community agencies. This study with a city council in England with a large housing stock (over 14,000 properties) in summer 2021 sought to understand the nature, circumstances and extent that hoardi

Health risk assessment of exposure to ambient formaldehyde in carpet manufacturing industries.

Formaldehyde is categorized as a definitive carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. To the best of our knowledge, no study has assessed the health risks of occupational exposure of workers in carpet manufacturing plants to formaldehyde. Therefore, this study assesses the health risks of the occupational exposure to formaldehyde of 67 male workers in carpet manufacturing plants in Iran in 2022. Exposure to formaldehyde was quantitatively determined after collecting personal exposure samples from the workers' respiratory zone and spectrophotometric analysis based on method

COVID-19 vaccine attitudes among youth experiencing homelessness: a qualitative analysis with opportunities for action.

Youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) are uniquely vulnerable to COVID-19 infection, yet are often excluded from response planning during the COVID-19 pandemic and other public health crises. As part of a larger community- and youth-engaged project through a national network of Prevention Research Centers, our qualitative study sought to describe youth perspectives that influence COVID-19 vaccine confidence and uptake, and identify youth-driven strategies to guide public health efforts to improve vaccine confidence and access. We conducted focus groups with youth experiencing homelessness (n =

Top Training Needs of the Governmental Public Health Workforce.

CONTEXT: Workforce development in governmental public health has historically focused on discipline-specific skills. However, as the field of public health has evolved, crosscutting skills have become critical. The 2017 fielding of the Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey (PH WINS) provides a national benchmark for gaps in crosscutting skills in state and local health departments. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to identify top areas of training needs in the governmental public health workforce using data from PH WINS 2017. DESIGN: PH WINS participants in state and lo

Liberatory alignment: Integrating agency and self-authorship to foster healing from racial trauma.

OBJECTIVE: Racial trauma poses significant and underaddressed challenges within existing health care systems, where current frameworks often fail to account for the political dimensions of healing or the ways that dominant models can reproduce the dynamics of power they seek to address. This article introduces the liberatory alignment framework, which integrates sociocultural understandings of agency with self-authorship theory to support healing from racial trauma. METHOD: The liberatory alignment framework integrates sociocultural understandings of agency with self-authorship theory, drawin

Healthy work environments among health care professionals: a scoping review protocol.

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review will explore the breadth and types of evidence on healthy work environments (HWEs) worldwide for interprofessional multidisciplinary health care teams collaborating to provide direct patient care across clinical settings. INTRODUCTION: Enhancing work environments is a priority for health care systems to maintain adequate staffing, high-quality care, and workforce engagement. However, the literature on HWEs is fragmented and compartmentalized by discipline, making it difficult to compare findings or determine which elements are most effective across settings. Hen

Like a prism: making sense of coercion in contemporary psychiatry through autoethnography.

This article focuses on coercion in contemporary psychiatry through the autoethnographic account of Peter, a mental health peer worker who experienced psychosis and coercive psychiatric interventions. Using Peter's personal narrative and poetry as a prism, this study critically underscores the complex and multifaceted nature of coercion, which extends beyond overt methods and techniques into subtler, informal psychological pressures and systemic constraints that often go unaddressed. Peter's narrative also emphasises the harmful effects of informal coercion, particularly its links to past trau

Environmental safety review of methoprene and bacterially-derived pesticides commonly used for sustained mosquito control.

Some pesticides are applied directly to aquatic systems to reduce numbers of mosquito larvae (larvicides) and thereby reduce transmission of pathogens that mosquitoes vector to humans and wildlife. Sustained, environmentally-safe control of larval mosquitoes is particularly needed for highly productive waters (e.g., catchment basins, water treatment facilities, septic systems), but also for other habitats to maintain control and reduce inspection costs. Common biorational pesticides include the insect juvenile hormone mimic methoprene and pesticides derived from the bacteria Bacillus thuringie
