Nosocomial infection control in healthcare settings: Protection against emerging infectious diseases.

The Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) outbreak in Korea in 2015 may be attributable to poor nosocomial infection control procedures implemented. Strict infection control measures were taken in the hospital where an imported case with MERS was treated in southern China and 53 health care workers were confirmed to be MERS-CoV negative. Infection control in healthcare settings, in which patients with emerging infectious diseases such as MERS, Ebola virus disease, and the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) are diagnosed and treated, are often imperfect. When it comes to emerging or unk…

New insights into the immunopathology and control of dengue virus infection.

Dengue virus poses a major threat to global public health: two-thirds of the world's population is now at risk from infection by this mosquito-borne virus. Dengue virus causes a range of diseases with a small proportion of infected patients developing severe plasma leakage that leads to dengue shock syndrome, organ impairment and bleeding. Infection with one of the four viral serotypes results in the development of homotypic immunity to that serotype. However, subsequent infection with a different serotype is associated with an increased risk of developing severe disease, which has led to the

Parasite infection and tuberculosis disease among children: a case-control study.

We conducted a case-control study to examine associations between parasite infection, including protozoa infection, and tuberculosis (TB) in children in Lima, Peru. We enrolled 189 matched-pairs. In multivariable conditional logistic regression analyses, Blastocystis hominis infection (rate ratio = 0.30, 95% confidence interval = 0.14-0.64, P = 0.002) was strongly associated with a lower risk of TB. We observed a statistically significant inverse linear dose-response relationship between Blastocystis hominis infection and TB. These findings should be confirmed in future prospective studies.

Ugandan medical and health sciences interns' infection control knowledge and practices.

BACKGROUND: We assessed the level of knowledge, attitudes, and practices of recent graduates of clinical health sciences who started their o … efore and after patient contact compared to medical doctors. CONCLUSION: Overall, the knowledge of infection control was not impressive and the attitudes and practices appeared to be heavily influenced by the lack of an enabling environment in training hospitals and internship hospitals. There is little likelihood of change due to internship experience except for …

Effects of systemic sitafloxacin on periodontal infection control in elderly patients.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the microbiological and clinical effects of the systemic administration of sitafloxacin (STFX) on periodontal pockets in elderly patients receiving supportive periodontal therapy (SPT). BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a risk factor for atherosclerosis. Better periodontal health contributes to reduce atherosclerosis-related diseases in elderly population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-four patients undergoing SPT were randomly assigned to two groups: a test group took 100 mg/day of STFX for five consecutive days, or a control group received scaling and root planing (SRP) un

Risk factors for periprosthetic ankle joint infection: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic ankle joint infection is a feared complication of total ankle arthroplasty because the implant fails in the majority of cases. However, risk factors for developing these infections are unknown. METHODS: We aimed to determine risk factors for infection in a matched case-control study that included twenty-six patients with periprosthetic ankle joint infection and two control groups, each consisting of fifty-two patients. RESULTS: The prevalence of periprosthetic ankle joint infection within our cohort was 4.7%. Four infections (15%) had a hematogenous origin and twen

Genetic control of resistance to Trypanosoma brucei brucei infection in mice.

BACKGROUND: Trypanosoma brucei brucei infects livestock, with severe effects in horses and dogs. Mouse strains differ greatly in susceptibility to this parasite. However, no genes controlling these differences were mapped. METHODS: We studied the genetic control of survival after T. b. brucei infection using recombinant congenic (RC) strains, which have a high mapping power. Each RC strain of BALB/c-c-STS/A (CcS/Dem) series contains a different random subset of 12.5% genes from the parental "donor" strain STS/A and 87.5% genes from the "background" strain BALB/c. Although BALB/c and STS/A mic

Control and eradication of Brucella melitensis infection in sheep and goats.

Brucella melitensis is the main etiological agent of brucellosis in sheep and goats, and is also the main agent responsible for human brucellosis, a predominantly occupational disease related to professions in direct contact with livestock. As there is currently no viable method of preventing human brucellosis to safeguard people attention must be directed toward effectively controlling the disease in sheep and goats. This review focuses on the different strategies in different socioeconomic and epidemiologic situations that can be applied to either control or eradicate brucellosis in sheep an

Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia as a quality indicator for hospital infection control.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the practicality and effectiveness of a new program that made health care-associated Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia (SAB) a quality indicator at Austin Health. DESIGN AND SETTING: Roll-out of the program over 9 months and review over 27 months from January 2006. Every episode of SAB at Austin Health was promptly reviewed, and classified as community- or health care-associated and as inpatient- or non-inpatient-related. Feedback was provided to treating clinicians for every SAB episode considered potentially preventable, and education-based interventions were introduc

Nitric oxide metabolites induced in Anopheles stephensi control malaria parasite infection.

Malaria parasite infection in anopheline mosquitoes is limited by inflammatory levels of nitric oxide metabolites. To assess the mechanisms of parasite stasis or toxicity, we investigated the biochemistry of these metabolites within the blood-filled mosquito midgut. Our data indicate that nitrates, but not nitrites, are elevated in the Plasmodium-infected midgut. Although levels of S-nitrosothiols do not change with infection, blood proteins are S-nitrosylated after ingestion by the mosquito. In addition, photolyzable nitric oxide, which can be attributed to metal nitrosyls, is elevated after

Why is an infection control program needed in the hemodialysis setting?

Infections account for the second leading cause of mortality among patients with end-stage renal disease. Many of these infections are due t … vancomycin (VISA), and vancomycin resistant S. aureus [VRSA]). It is extremely important to follow infection control recommendations designed to prevent these types of adverse events from occurring in the hemodialysis population. The campaign to prevent antimicrobial resistance in dialysis includes four strategies: Prevent infection; diagnose and treat infection; …

Control of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus infection in granzyme B deficient mice.

We have investigated whether granzyme B (GzmB) is required for effective cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) mediated control of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) infection. Clearance of LCMV from tissues of GzmB-deficient (GzmB-) mice following intraperitoneal infection with LCMV was impaired compared with control mice; however, the virus was ultimately eliminated. The impaired clearance of LCMV in GzmB- mice was not due to a deficiency in the generation of LCMV-specific T cells. In addition, CTL from LCMV-infected GzmB- mice efficiently lysed virus-infected cells in vitro, but were deficien

Dental hygienists and infection control: knowledge, attitudes and behaviour in Italy.

This study evaluated knowledge, attitudes and behaviour regarding infection control of dental hygienists in Italy. Among the 185 responders to the self-administered mailed questionnaire, 91.3% agreed with the correct responses to the three questions on knowledge about infection prevention and control procedures chosen as an indicator of 'good' knowledge. However, 21% were uncertain whether, or disagreed that, dental instruments should be rinsed in water after contact with glutaraldehyde and 17.5% agreed that, or were uncertain whether, 10 min contact with glutaraldehyde provided sterilization.…
