Three new sulfur reagents for specific identification of amino acids on thin-layer chromatography plates have been introduced. These three sulfur containing reagents are capable of developing various distinguishable colors with many of them. A probable mechanism for such color formation is proposed.

Ifosfamide (isophosphamide) and mesna (2-mercaptoethane sodium sulfonate) were administered intravenously at monthly intervals to 46 patients with advanced epithelial ovarian carcinoma refractory to or recurrent after cisplatin-containing combination chemotherapy. Initially, ifosfamide was given as 1.5 g/m2/d x 5 days and mesna as 300 mg/m2 every 4 hours for three doses following ifosfamide, but the initial dose of ifosfamide was reduced to 1.2 g/m2 because of toxicity. 2-Nitro-5-thiocyanatobenzoic acid has been proposed as a reagent for converting thiol groups in proteins into their S-cyano derivatives. Evidence was obtained for formation of both the S-cyano derivative and the mixed disulphide derivative. Formation of the S-cyano derivative can be promoted by addition of excess of CN-to the reaction mixture.

Parasites of the genus Leishmania infect the mammalian hosts, including mice and humans and cause cutaneous or visceral leishmaniasis depending upon the parasite species transmitted by the vector sandfly. In the present study, the motilin receptor was characterized by enzymatic digestion studies and by solubilization of the motilin-receptor complex from prelabeled membranes using the anionic detergent cholic acid. Motilin binding was significantly decreased by preincubation of membranes of rabbit antral tissue with trypsin, phospholipase A2, C, D, dithiothreitol and 2-mercaptoethanol but not by neuraminidase and beta-galactosidase. When activity of peroxidase in adult Paragonimus westermani was monitored using o-dianisidine and H2O2 as substrates, its specific activity was 1.5 times higher in excretory-secretory product (ESP) than in crude extract. The enzyme was purified by two purification steps of Sephacryl S-300 Superfine gel permeation and DEAE-Trisacryl M anion exchange chromatographies. The nuclei of Plasmodium yoelii nigeriensis contain an enzyme, ADP-ribosyltransferase, that will incorporate the ADP-ribose moiety of NAD+ into acid-insoluble product. The time, pH and temperature optima of this incorporation are 30 min, 8.5 and 25 degrees C respectively. The oxidative phosphorylation inhibitor DBCT (dibutylchloromethyltin chloride) inhibits state 3 respiration at a concentration less than that which stimulates K+ flux into respiring rat liver mitochondria.
