CASE: We present a case of a 78-year-old man with lumbar stenosis who was referred for urgent spine surgery evaluation after the development of progressive bilateral lower extremity numbness and gait disturbance. Additional workup demonstrated thoracic cord edema consistent with a postviral transverse myelitis. He was treated nonoperatively with clinical improvement to his baseline at the final follow-up.
CONCLUSION: This case illustrates the importance of maintaining a broad differential diagnosis when patients with lumbar stenosis present with atypical neurologic symptoms. A thorough histor

BACKGROUND: Dystonia, one of the most common movement disorders, It was mostly a result of pathology in basal ganglia; there have been increasing numbers of dystonia cases reported in patients with spinal cord pathology.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here we report, a 14 year old female adolescent from Addis Ababa Ethiopia presented with dystonia of extremities within one month after she was diagnosed with transverse myelitis.
CONCLUSION: Although any spinal cord pathology can result in spinal dystonia, demyelinating diseases are among the leading causes. There are few case reports on dystonic spasm ca

Toxocariasis caused by Toxocara canis or less frequently by T.catis is a common parasitic infection worldwide. Clinical spectrum in humans can vary from asymptomatic infection to serious organ disfunction depending on the load of parasite, migration target of the larva and the inflammatory response of the host. Transverse myelitis (TM) due to toxocariasis is an uncommon illness identified mainly as case reports in literature. In this report, a case of TM who was diagnosed as neurotoxocariasis by serological findings has been presented. A 44-year-old male patient complained with backache was di

OBJECTIVES: Transverse myelitis (TM) is an uncommon neurologic condition characterised by the segmental involvement of the spinal cord. Although its etiology is unknown, a well established list of associations have been described, many items of which point towards an autoimmune and vasculitic process. TM is also a rare complication of Behçet's disease (BD), an autoimmune process. Herein we present 4 cases of TM associated with BD.
METHODS: Retrospective chart reviews of 104 patients were done. Diagnosis of BD was established in each case according to the diagnostic criteria established by the

BACKGROUND: There is lack of reported magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies of idiopathic acute transverse myelitis (ATM) in children.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the imaging features of idiopathic ATM in children.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the spinal MRI findings of children diagnosed with ATM. The anatomic regions, vertebral segmental length, gray or white matter involvement, cord expansion and gadolinium enhancement were examined.
RESULTS: A total of 27 children were diagnosed with isolated monophasic ATM with a mean follow-up of 5.2 years. Two children later diagnosed with neur

An 11-year-old girl was admitted with back pain for 2 months, inability to walk for 15 days, and enuresis and encopresis for 2 days. She had been hospitalized with the diagnosis of brucellosis in another hospital. At presentation, she had paraplegia, sphincter dysfunction, and bilateral sensory loss below the T6 level, and was initially diagnosed with transverse myelitis caused by brucellosis. On the third day of hospitalization, however, agglutination test for brucella was negative, but it was positive for Salmonella. Therefore, transverse myelitis was considered to be due to salmonellosis. T

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Acute transverse myelitis (ATM) is a rare inflammatory spinal cord disorder causing significant motor, sensory, and autonomic dysfunction in children. Although advances in diagnosis and therapy have improved outcomes, data on early treatment response and associated factors remain limited, particularly in Southeast Asia. This study aimed to identify clinical, radiological, and immunological factors associated with early in-hospital response in children with ATM in Vietnam.
METHODS: This retrospective case-control study included 56 children under 18 years of age diagn

INTRODUCTION: Dengue is an arbovirus with significant global prevalence that can lead to severe neurological complications, such as longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LEMT).
CASE REPORT: We describe a 36-year-old man who developed sudden paraparesis and urinary retention approximately ten days after dengue infection. MRI revealed longitudinal hyperintense lesions in the cervical and thoracic spinal cord. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed an inflammatory pattern and dengue serology was positive. The patient was treated with intravenous methylprednisolone and rehabilitation, lead

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a severe autoimmune demyelinating disease of the central nervous system commonly associated with aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibodies. Area postrema syndrome (APS), characterized by intractable nausea, vomiting, and hiccups, is a core clinical feature but is frequently misdiagnosed as a gastrointestinal disorder, leading to delays in diagnosis and treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-year-old woman with a history of treated breast cancer presented with one week of intractable nausea, vomiting, progressive left lower extremity weakness, and

INTRODUCTION: Acute transverse myelitis in children is a rapidly progressive disease of unknown etiology, with some patients experiencing lifelong paralysis. Myositis ossificans (MO) refers to heterotopic ossification within soft tissues. Neurogenic MO is rare in clinical practice and is often misdiagnosed, particularly in pediatric patients who are unable to clearly describe their symptoms. Diagnosis typically relies on imaging studies.
METHODS: This report describes a case of an 8-year-old child who developed paraplegia following a diagnosis of acute transverse myelitis and subsequently pre

Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) and transverse myelitis (TM) are both neuro-inflammatory disorders that are attributed to dysfunctions of the peripheral nervous system and spinal cord, respectively. The two conditions involve immune-mediated destruction and inflammation of the nervous system and may present clinically as a weakness in the muscles, loss of normal sensations, and even paralysis of the body or extremities. Although the incidence of GBS and TM is quite rare, there have been reports of the two diseases developing in patients, either independently or concurrently, following COVID-19 v

Transverse myelitis is a rare but documented sequela of heroin use. While the underlying etiology is not clearly elucidated, the prevailing pathophysiologic mechanism amongst existing literature suggests an immune-mediated hypersensitivity reaction due to heroin insufflation following a long period of abstinence. Outcomes vary among the limited reports, but prognosis tends to be poor due to an acute and rapidly progressive disease course. Here, we describe a case of extensive transverse myelitis in a chronic heroin user following heroin insufflation. This report hopes to provide greater insigh

Myelitis is a rare inflammatory myelopathy, and known associated etiologies only account for a small number of causes. A significant percentage of cases have an unknown etiology and are considered idiopathic. With 64% to 68% of cases fitting into the idiopathic category, helminth infections, and specifically pinworm parainfections, should be considered in cases that would otherwise be classified as idiopathic. This case report outlines a pediatric patient diagnosed with myelitis given her progressive weakness, fussiness, refusal to bear weight as well as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demons

In late 2019, the emergence of a new viral strain, later referred to as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) took the shape of a global pandemic, affecting millions of lives and deteriorating economies around the globe. Vaccines were developed at an exceptional rate to combat the viral desolation, all of them being rolled out once they displayed sufficient safety and efficacy. However, assorted adverse events came into attention, one of them being Transverse Myelitis (TM), an infrequent, immune-mediated, focal disease of the spinal cord. This disorder can lead to severe

CONTEXT: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), acute cerebellitis and transverse myelitis are rare complications of COVID-19 infection separately. The combination of these three, however, has not yet been reported.
FINDINGS: We present an atypical case (42-year-old man) that developed acute ascending flaccid paraparesis, ataxia and urinary retention two weeks after COVID-19 infection. Neurological examination revealed distal and proximal weakness (4/5) on lower extremities, decreased tendon reflexes, sixth cranial nerve palsy and dysmetria without sensory disturbance. His cranial MRI showed cerebell
