An 83-year-old Cambodian woman presented with multiple painful erythematous nodules on the lower legs, forearms and wrists. Subsequent history and investigations revealed a granulomatous lobular panniculitis associated with Sjögren's syndrome. This is a rare cutaneous association of Sjögrens syndrome with only three similar case reports in the literature.

Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare, recently accepted clinical entity which is characterized by the presence of an unspecific inflammatory process in the fat tissue of the gut mesentery. A usually intermittent abdominal pain is the most frequent symptom, whereas urological involvement is exceptional. This paper contributes a new case of mesenteric panniculitis in a 72-year old male patient who initially presented with signs and symptoms of intestinal obstruction resulting from mesenteric tumoration, and affecting a segment of the terminal ileum which, during growth, infiltrated the apex of the …

We reviewed the clinical history, and the physical, laboratory and ultrasonography examinations of a young female suffering from mesenteric panniculitis. In our case, as well as those described by other authors, definitive diagnosis was histological and our patient has had a benign course of the disease.

Firm, red, subcutaneous plaques developed on the cheeks of a 19-month-old girl during a one-month period of rapid steroid withdrawal. The clinical features were most consistent with poststeroid panniculitis. This rare complication of steroid therapy should be differentiated from other causes of red cheeks in children.

The clinical and histopathologic findings in 13 patients with lipomembranous changes in the subcutaneous adipose tissue as part of the inflammatory reaction are presented. Nine patients had clinical evidence of vascular disease and four had clinical evidence of connective tissue disease. Histopathologic evidence of endarteritis obliterans, venous stasis, and hemorrhage was present in more than half the patients, and the clinical lesion of liposclerosis was frequently present. These findings suggest that the histologic changes of lipomembranous panniculitis may be the result of an inflammatory …

A 37-year-old man presented with panniculitis of the legs that, on biopsy, showed aggregates of crystals whose appearance suggested sodium urate. Based on this finding, a uric acid level was obtained which proved to be markedly elevated. The patient subsequently developed gouty arthritis. Gout should be added to the differential diagnosis of causes of panniculitis, and biopsy specimens of panniculitis should be carefully examined for crystals.

Mesenteric panniculitis (MP) is an inflammatory process of the mesenteric fat associated with a variable amount of fibrosis. We present the CT findings in four patients with MP. In three patients CT showed a fatty mass in the root of the mesentery and surrounding the mesenteric vessels without distorting them. The fourth patient presented an unusual form of MP with radiologically visible calcifications. Diagnosis was suggested preoperatively in two cases.

Study of 18 patients with biopsy diagnoses of eosinophilic panniculitis revealed diverse patterns of systemic disease, including Wells' syndrome, vasculitis, atopy, and erythema nodosum as well as localized panniculitis. Significant associated diseases included psychiatric illness, 6 (drug dependency, 4); atopy, 5 (asthma, 3); malignancies, 5; immune complex vasculitis, 4; thyroid disease, 2; Wells' eosinophilic cellulitis, 2; glomerulonephritis and sarcoidosis, 1 each. The skin lesions varied from urticarial papules and plaques to purpura, pustules, and ulcerative lesions but always included …

An anergic patient with arrested Hodgkin's disease developed a cutaneous granulomatous panniculitis, an unusual dermatologic manifestation of this tumor. These granulomatous cutaneous lesions were composed primarily of epithelial cells and were free of necrosis. In contrast, focal necrotic areas were present in the granulomas detected two years previously in the original lymph node biopsy examination.

Specific and nonspecific panniculitis occur in connective tissue diseases. Microscopic studies of the epidermis and dermis, immunofluorescent microscopy, and extensive serologic testing may aid in the diagnosis and classification of these unusual syndromes. Connective tissue panniculitis and focal lipoatrophy may be forms of immunoreactive panniculitis or connective tissue disease (or both) in which typical microscopic, serologic, or other events related to classic connective tissue disease have not occurred.

Infection with Yersinia enterocolitica usually procedures gastrointestinal symptoms. We here report a severe case of panniculitis-like lesions caused by Yersinia enterocolitica where only mild gastrointestinal symptoms were noticed. Blood samples revealed high Yersinia enterocolitica serotype 3 titres, increased ESR, leucocytosis, and in addition Yersinia enterocolitica was cultured from the faeces. When panniculitis-like lesions are the only clinical manifestation yersiniosis should be considered as a possible cause.
