OBJECTIVE: This study was to evaluate the effects of prevention and control regarding programs on typhoid fever and paratyphoid fever, in Guizhou province, from 2007 to 2012, to provide evidence for the improvement of related programs.
METHODS: Data on typhoid fever and paratyphoid including information on epidemics, individual, cases, measures for prevention and control programs taken and relative government documents were collected and analyzed in Guizhou province, from 2007 to 2012. Information related to the average annual incidence, nature of outbreaks, time span before confirmed diagnos…

BACKGROUND: Analyses of the global spatial and temporal distribution of enteric fever outbreaks worldwide are important factors to consider in estimating the disease burden of enteric fever disease burden.
METHODS: We conducted a global literature review of enteric fever outbreak data by systematically using multiple databases from 1 January 1990 to 31 December 2018 and classified them by time, place, diagnostic methods, and drug susceptibility, to illustrate outbreak characteristics including spatial and temporal patterns.
RESULTS: There were 180 940 cases in 303 identified outbreaks caused

BACKGROUND: Typhoid and paratyphoid fever are endemic in Hongta District and their prevalence, at 113 per 100,000 individuals, remains the highest in China. However, the exact sources of the disease and its main epidemiological characteristics have not yet been clearly identified.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: Numbers of typhoid and paratyphoid cases per day during the period 2006 to 2010 were obtained from the Chinese Center of Disease Control (CDC). A number of suspected disease determinants (or their proxies), were considered for use in spatiotemporal analysis: these included locations of discharg…

OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to forecast epidemic peaks of typhoid and paratyphoid fever in China using the grey disaster model, to evaluate its feasibility of predicting the epidemic tendency of notifiable diseases.
METHODS: According to epidemiological features, the GM(1,1) model and DGM model were used to build the grey disaster model based on the incidence data of typhoid and paratyphoid fever collected from the China Health Statistical Yearbook. Model fitting accuracy test was used to evaluate the performance of these two models. Then, the next catastrophe date was predic…

Enteric fever is prevalent in developing countries including Nepal, where it still remains as a major health problem. Appropriate antibiotics are essential for the treatment of typhoid and paratyphoid fever. A prospective study was carried out to characterize the epidemiological features of enteric fever in Kathmandu, Nepal and to analyse the recent trend of antimicrobial resistance pattern of the Salmonella isolated from the cases of enteric fever from different hospitals in Kathmandu during June, 2002 to June, 2004. A total of 1469 Salmonella typhi and Salmonella paratyphi 'A' isolates colle…

BACKGROUND: Enteric fever remains a major cause of fever in travelers. We evaluated new trends in enteric fever.
METHODS: We reviewed the epidemiological, clinical, biological, bacteriological data, and outcome of all cases of typhoid and paratyphoid fever seen in our department over the last decade. The inclusion criteria were the presence of signs compatible with enteric fever and isolation of Salmonella typhi or Salmonella paratyphi A, B, or C from blood or stool cultures or any other site.
RESULTS: Among the 41 patients, 38 (93%) had travel-associated enteric fever. The main geographic s…

The response of 310 patients with typhoid or paratyphoid fevers to current antibiotic therapy was studied retrospectively. Most patients were of Asian or European origin, thus reflecting the areas in which they were infected. Of the 244 patients with well-recorded therapy 63% were treated with chloramphenicol, 22% with co-trimoxazole and the remainder with various penicillins. There was little difference in response in terms of resolution of fever. Symptoms persisted in only two of 153 (1.3%) patients given chloramphenicol but side-effects led to a change of treatment in nine of these patients…

BACKGROUND: Typhoid and paratyphoid fever are common infectious diseases and remain a heavy burden, especially in some low-income countries. Although the global burden has decreased over the past three decades, an analysis of the burden of typhoid and paratyphoid fever will help inform public health strategies.
METHODS: This study is aimed to comprehensively evaluate the global, regional, and national burden of typhoid and paratyphoid, and the temporal trends while exploring potential associations with socio-demographic development over three decades (1990-2021). Data on typhoid and paratypho…

BACKGROUND: The prevention and control of infectious diseases have become a critical issue in public health, especially after COVID-19. Typhoid and paratyphoid fevers continue to pose a threat, with outbreaks still occurring in many parts of the world, including certain regions of China. The aim of this study was to analyze the incidence trends and epidemiological characteristics of typhoid and paratyphoid fevers in China from 2014 to 2022, to delineate the evolving epidemiological characteristics and spatiotemporal patterns, thereby informing evidence-based prevention and control strategies. …

Typhoid and paratyphoid fever are systemic infections caused by Salmonella Typhi and Salmonella Paratyphi. These diseases are endemic in many parts of China, occurring periodically throughout the year. Epidemiological features, temporal trends, and spatial distribution of these fevers were analyzed using GraphPad Prism 9 with data collected by China's Public Health Science Data Center from 2004 to 2019. Charts were generated to depict their incidence across provinces, years, age groups, and occupations. Spatial clustering was assessed using ArcGIS 10.5 and Moran's I index. SaTScan 9.5 was empl…
