Exposure, Extinction, and Cognitive Appraisals in Autistic Adults With Social Anxiety: Evidence From a Structured Speech Exposure Task.

Social anxiety (SA) is highly prevalent among autistic adults, yet little is known about how autistic people respond to common therapeutic strategies, such as exposure tasks. This study examined responses to a structured speech exposure task embedded within an 8-week modified cognitive-behavioral therapy (M-CBT) program. Thirty-two autistic adults with co-occurring SA completed pre- and post-task assessments of anxiety and related cognitive appraisals, including self-focused attention, perceived performance, appearance concerns, and threat appraisals. Participants reported appropriate engageme

Brief moderate-intensity cycling, momentary nervousness, and mathematics performance in young adults.

INTRODUCTION: Mathematics anxiety and test anxiety are associated with poorer mathematics performance. This study investigated whether a brief bout of moderate-intensity physical activity reduces momentary nervousness and improves subsequent mathematics performance. Sixty young adults (18-29 years) were randomly assigned to either a 10-min cycling condition or a passive sedentary control condition. METHODS: Momentary nervousness was assessed before the intervention, immediately afterward, and after completion of a 32-item mathematics test containing lower and higher-complexity arithmetic prob

Predictors of anxiety and depression in hematopoietic stem cell transplant patients during protective isolation.

OBJECTIVE: To examine in a sample of hematopoietic stem cell transplant patients assessed throughout protective isolation (i) levels of anxiety and depression and (ii) pre-isolation factors (socio-demographics, biomedical variables and personality traits), which might predict higher levels of anxiety and depression during isolation. METHODS: The study used a longitudinal prospective design. Anxiety and depression were assessed in 107 participants by the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and Self-rating Depression Scale at admission and weekly at fixed time points throughout isolation. Among pre-i

Subjective cognitive complaints and objective cognitive impairment in hoarding disorder.

Individuals with Hoarding Disorder (HD) frequently complain of problems with attention and memory. These self-identified difficulties are often used as justification for saving and acquiring behaviors. Research using neuropsychological measures to examine verbal and visual memory performance and sustained attention have reported contradictory findings. Here we aim to determine the relationship between self-reported problems with memory and attention, objective memory and attention performance, and self-reported depression and anxiety symptoms in HD. Data was available for 319 individuals who p

Two-Step Screening for Depression and Anxiety in Patients with Cancer: A Retrospective Validation Study Using Real-World Data.

Background: Although screening for distress is recommended by many cancer care guidelines, the uptake of such screening in cancer centers remains limited. Improving the acceptability of screening programs in cancer centers requires a reduction in clinical burden and an improved detection of distress. The purpose of this study was to validate the performance of the two-step screening algorithm used in the Distress Assessment and Response Tool (DART) for identifying cases of anxiety and depression. Methods: This retrospective validation study consisted of patients at the Princess Margaret Cancer

A comparison of the psychological effects of robot motion in physical and virtual environments.

A mixed-methods approach was used to assess the fidelity of virtual environments as ergonomic assessment tools for human-robot interaction. Participants performed a visual search task in the physical environment while a nearby collaborative robot repeatedly extended its arm toward them. This scenario was reconstructed in two virtual environments with different levels of graphical detail. Measures of presence, task performance, workload, and anxiety were taken to determine the effect of robot motion in all three environments. Task performance decreased in response to robot motion in the physica

Psychometric properties of the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory for Children using a non-American population-based sample.

Although previous studies have examined the factor structure of the SPAI-C, adequate factor analytic methodology has not been employed. This study explored the psychometric properties of the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory for Children (SPAI-C), using a non-American population-based sample of older children and young adolescents 11-14 years of age. Initially an exploratory factor analysis was conducted followed 1 year later by a confirmatory factor analysis. Five factors labeled Assertiveness, Public Performance, Physical/Cognitive Symptoms, Social Encounter, and Avoidance were retained an

Trait anxiety impairs cognitive flexibility when overcoming a task acquired response and a preexisting bias.

Individuals with high trait anxiety tend to be worse at flexibly adapting goal-directed behavior to meet changing demands relative to those with low trait anxiety. Past research on anxiety and cognitive flexibility has used tasks that involve overcoming a recently acquired rule, strategy, or response pattern after an abrupt change in task requirements (e.g., choice X led to positive outcomes but now leads to negative outcomes). An important limitation of this research is that many decision making situations require overcoming a preexisting bias (e.g., deciding whether to withdraw a historicall

Does It Matter What Screener We Use? A Comparison of Ultra-brief PHQ-4 and E-mwTool-3 Screeners for Anxiety and Depression Among People With and Without HIV.

The burden of depression and anxiety disorders is high in sub-Saharan Africa, especially for people with HIV (PWH). The Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4) and Electronic Mental Wellness Tool-3 (E-mwTool-3) are ultra-brief screening tools for these disorders. We compared the performance of PHQ-4 and E-mwTool-3 for screening MINI-International Neuropsychiatric Interview diagnoses of depression and anxiety among a sample of individuals with and without HIV in two primary care clinics and one general hospital in Maputo City, Mozambique. Perception of arousal in social anxiety: effects of false feedback during a social interaction.

Cognitive models suggest that during social interactions, socially anxious individuals direct their attention to internal cues of arousal and use this information to erroneously infer how they appear to others. High (N=36) and low (N=36) socially anxious adults had a conversation with a stooge, and were led to believe by false feedback that they were experiencing either an increase or decrease in arousal, or evaluating the comfort level of the feedback equipment. Compared to the other groups, participants who believed their arousal had increased, reported greater anxiety, poorer perceived perf

Shifts in attention biases in response to acute pain induction: examination of a model of "conversion" among repressors.

Unlike most people, those who are characterized by a repressive coping style report high levels of physical (sensory) pain but low levels of emotional distress (affective pain), which is a discrepancy that may suggest a "conversion" process. In two studies, we tested an attention allocation model, proposing that repressors direct attention away from threatening negative affective information and toward nonthreatening physical pain information during emotionally arousing (painful) situations. In Study 1, 84 participants underwent a cold pressor and then recovered. Repressors reported greater pa

Quality of life in adult cancer patients treated with bone marrow transplantation--a review of the literature.

There is now an increasing interest in measuring quality of life (QOL) in cancer patients. Information on psychosocial issues and the patients' QOL give a more comprehensive evaluation of the treatment outcome than survival and relapse free intervals alone. Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) has become a standard, curative treatment in haematological diseases such as leukaemia and lymphomas. However, serious physical and psychological side effects are experienced by some patients. A review of the literature on QOL in adult BMT patients shows that the development in post-BMT research on psychoso

Effects of a six-week basketball-specific individual skills development program on mental toughness and sport competition anxiety.

INTRODUCTION: This quasi-experimental study aimed to investigate the impact of a six-week basketball-specific individual skills development program on mental toughness and competitive anxiety among young professional male basketball players competing in organized leagues. Mental toughness and anxiety are critical psychological factors that influence athletic performance, particularly in high-pressure sports like basketball. The study sought to bridge the gap in existing research by examining how individualized training programs can simultaneously enhance mental resilience and reduce anxiety le

Anxiolytic effects of a combination of Melissa officinalis and Valeriana officinalis during laboratory induced stress.

OBJECTIVE: Melissa officinalis (lemon balm) and Valeriana officinalis (valerian) have been used both traditionally and contemporaneously as mild sedatives, anxiolytics and hypnotics. Recent research has suggested that both may attenuate laboratory induced stress. As the two herbs are most often sold in combination with each other the current study assessed the anxiolytic properties of such a combination during laboratory-induced stress. METHODS: In this double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, balanced cross-over experiment, 24 healthy volunteers received three separate single doses (600
